JFK AT 100

Next year.. 1917..had JFK lived he would turn 100 years old on May 17th. I think 'what would life be like in America and the World had Kennedy lived? I think of JFK as a frail white haired old man. Despite his100 years Kennedy would still have his winning smile and charisma.

Had he lived would we had a Vietnam with 58,000 casualties? What would his life had been like? JFK was 25 years older than me. I was amused how youthful Kennedy looked compared to my Uncle Al Potvin! How could Kennedy be so prescient? Had he lived to retirement what type of life would he have enjoyed?

Clearly Cape Cod was his love and Hyannis Port his home I thought about Kennedy then as I think about him now. I lived that life for a fleeting moment as a ranger at Cape Cod National Seashore in 1964. A curious fact about the Kennedy Half Dollar first struck in 1964..90% Silver..430 million were struck well into 1965 bearing the 1964 date.

Kennedy Half dollars are part of our numismatic culture. Collectors and hoarders of all ages have been enamored by these coins. The first fear of the Mint production of JFK coins were greater than the 16 years of the Ben Franklin coins! Both Catholics and non-catholics and folks around the world have something tangible to relish in the memory of our slain President.

How would have Kennedy's adult life unfolded into old age? Would his marriage lasted? How about his health? JFK belongs in the ranks of FDR in enduring life challenges with health problems. Kennedy had a secret: a sun lamp. It was all in perception of JFK. He knew how life's game was played on its stage.

Camelot was truncated by the assassins bullets. What if Jackie lived to old age? Would she have allowed her hair to turn white? ... her kids.. if John-John lived? I shook his hand at Clark U in the mid 90s. So many Kennedys... so many tragedies. John, Joe, Bobby, John Jr. No matter what the Kennedy global superstardom has never been equaled and boy, did the world change the fateful November day in Dallas.

There must be a reason, a deep and embedded reason why Jack and Jackie's memory lives on like it was a yesterday.....Abraham, Martin and John..so aptly sung by Dion.  "Has anybody here seen my old friend, John?"
