SATURDAY NIGHT AT THE JOSH POTVINS

The idyllic Saturday on Birch Hill called for a cookout with the New Weber gas grill! A dozen kids jumping in the swimming pool provided for entertainment as I sat in the background on a sway-rocker.

Tranquility prevails as the citronella pots were lit. How nice. Chase and friends were metal detecting in the mowed hay fields. It was a social gathering indeed. This one event served as the precursor for the Night Before The Forth. It was my cheeseburger in paradise!

"AMAZING GRACE" LOUIS B. GRACE,MD RIP

North Brookfield's Congregational Church was filled with Dr. Grace's patients and friends! It seems the church was as full as yesterday's funeral for Aunt Blanche! Today the crowd was either white hair or bald with white hair. I recognized many of the well-wishes to his memory.

Dr. Grace was truly a small town practitioner. Better yet he was an entrepreneur and loving father. He developed Graceland in NB. Lou was my friend.

As an Army physician he served in the Army twice. Doc Grace was funny with his sense of humor. He knew his patients and truly was a Country Doctor.

A slide show captured the many moods and happiness lived in his 91 years. It truly was a celebration of FAMILY and friends.

A ROOM FULL OF COUSINS; A CHURCH FULL FRIENDS

Aunt Blanche's funeral mass was formidable! There were hundreds of friends and relatives in attendance. For me it was a congregation my many cousins. In particular was seeing Phyllis Kizzle after decades. She and husband Bernie Havel came in from Michigan.

I visited with the Borelli cousins.. John, Peter, Michael and Mary Jane. A retrospective display of vintage Poulin/ Borelli photographs were meaningful to me for my maternal grandparents set the tone. The Poulin children..from Rita to Del and Florence and Albert, Jeannette  and Francis graced the Parish Hall walls. Nice.

I saw friends I hand's seen in years. Tomorrow will be a testimony to Dr. Louis B. Grace at the North Brookfield Congregational Church in North Brookfield.

Tomorrow is Aunt Blanche Borelli's Funeral and my last day of therapy with Al.

Also experimented with a shower bench. did maneuver to lay in some warm bath water.

A summer's day, indeed!

MY DIFFERENT TUESDAY

One of the highlights of my Tuesday was spending $125 for food and supplies at Hannafords NB. It was Senior day with a discount. I saved six bucks. Cheated and bought some blueberry muffins and other goodies. Seems buying good by the case keeps my refrigerator full.

Had a nurse and a therapist in today. Seems I'm winding down their services. I walk with a cane or a walker and am getting better... one day at a time!

Big bag of dirty laundry went the way of Tri Valley last night at 8:00PM. I was in my skiffies when a "tattoo queen" wrapped on my front door!

Bought the Times and USA Today and got the mail. Now we go into "pay-day" tomorrow.

Clearing skies in the west is always a good sign!

RIP Aunt Blanche Borelli age 88. Rita's youngest sister.

WATCH THE PRICE OF GOLD!

Every commodity market seems to be boiling. But for how long? What goes up comes down and I see in my little crystal ball "somethings gotta give!"

Gold is the one sure shot in trying times. IF war is on the horizon just watch what gold does!Presently $1,422 an ounce!

This has been a slow Monday. Nobody providing therapy. My back remains stiff and I try to walk with the walker in the Poodle. I feel I've had enough sun for a while. Had two decent meals and my weigh-in was 162lbs. Josh came by earlier and will return with my pill caddy.

JOSH & CHASE BUILD A GIGANTIC ADIRONDACK CHAIR!

Nothing finer than to see a father and son working on a project! Our trip to Lowes in Ware brought home pressure treated lumber and Josh took the lead and fashioning a giant Adirondack chair. Poolside reveals a dozen or so prestigious such chairs... white and beautiful.

Jenine's Sea food and scallops didn't taste as good as Howards! Too big! Howard's wins.

Another beauty of a Sunday. Less winds. Maybe even a sunny Monday in the making?

SUNSHINE ON BIRCH HILL

I spent the better part of 4 hours basking in the sun and breezes while Son Josh whizzed around on his spiffy orange Kubota mower. I then took a shower in the outside set up as Chase Robert. Cloud formations were stunning.

My smartphone was momentarily lost and found by Josh.

Tomorrow like like another fine June Sunday. Stay tuned! And oh yes, I enjoyed  a cup of black raspberry ice cream from Howards!

MY MEMORIES OF OLD CAPE COD

It all began in the summer of 1954 with my family joining the Andy Stevens
family for a week's visit on Sea Street, Dennis Port. from there we grew and discovered Eastham where Andy and Dave built summer homes. and in 1963 I discovered a uniformed National Park Service Ranger in uniform. This discovery inspired me to wanting to be a ranger!

The chips fell and I was given a ranger position for the 1964 season. North Brookfield' Francis T. "Red" Lee helped me by contacting Senator Ted Kennedy. Bingo! I was assigned to Herring Cove, Provincetown in June of 1964. This seasonal position proved to be the highlight of my early adulthood.

I was assigned the duty of patrolling the sand dunes in Truro, lived in a tiny cabin and read Thoreau's poetry as I ensconced in a sandy cliff overlooking the Atlantic Ocean!

National Park Rangers have a variety of duties and mine was "select." I got to know and understand what the Outer  Cape Cod really is all about; Appreciation of Mother Nature!

ARCHIVES OF BP

Recently I was returned a half dozen of short stories written over the years. It seems that no matter where I have traveled I took time to document my experiences and sharing them with my family and friends..

The topics vary on the mood. Here's a sampling:
  • Human Space Flight - a recap of my months at the Kennedy Space Center, Titusville and STS-95 John Glenn's return.
  • My Midnight Train in Boston - A story of my observations in the sleeping city.
  • Learning about Wyoming - This is a wonderful story of my traveling all around the 9th largest state.
  • I Love New York Written on 1/1/2000.
  • Mount Washington Reminisced.. my story of the month I worked in the Summit MTW Hotel in 1963
  • By having these writings I can refresh my memory on facts.
I've been everywhere, man!

WYOMING

Twenty years ago I drove across the USA to Wyoming! I always was curious about Wyoming as JFK did a conservation visit one Fall. Now it was my turn to visit the land of buffalos and cowboys.

In my search for a new life I did a fact finding mission in July of 1999. Flying into Denver I traveled north to the least populated state in the Union. Arriving in Cheyenne I had discovered Mecca! I wanted more so I returned to Frontier Days later that month. I was in my glory...so much that I returned in late august and staked claim in Laramie!

Once settled and working in the U of W Washakie Food Cafeteria my ship had come in ( sale of a property) and I bought a Cheyenne Chevrolet truck in Cheyenne. I declared my independence and traveled I-80 from seeing Devils Tower to discovering Jackson Hole. I did a trip to Casper and witnessed the vast coal productions and mines.

Wyoming is rated #1 for natural vistas by truckers. The buffalo roam like you wouldn't believe it! There are clear skies 300 days of the year. The Legend of the West is personified with the name "Buffalo Bill" Cody.

If you are looking for some diversion and natural beauty, Wyoming is the place to visit. Frontier Days are coming up next month!

I think the tone of my day's outlook can be controlled by what I listen to and not necessarily observed.  Try it.. you'll like it!

"THE DREAM OF THE AGES" - MOON LANDING 1969

It's too bad JFK didn't live to see the Moon Landing some 50 years ago. It's too bad he didn't live to see the 842 lbs of moon rocks retrieved.

In 6 weeks the world will be celebrating Neil Armstrong's testimony of his leaping onto the silver powder of the moon's surface. Last night's Smithsonian Channel's program was great in recounting what the astronauts went through in training for their 4 day trip. All astronauts had great credentials being test pilots.

I think this 50th Anniversary celebration of Apollo's success is a great way to share it with our youth! Nothing should be taken for granted given the way this one success has affected  the history of mankind.

On the personal side I spent the winter seeking employment at the Kennedy Space Center to no avail. I did have the chance to talk with folks who were part and parcel of this historic event. Now my granddaughter Madeline Grace Potvin is working on a paper regarding this historic voyage!

MY MONDAY MORNING NUMBERS

Today we have crystal blue skies.. what a difference from yesterday's funk!

My blood sugar read is 117.. indeed a great number. In weighing myself after 4 days I was surprised to see 160 lbs. So, I will increase my intake of bottled water and snacks.

GOLD

The price of gold has been inching upwards in the past month. The weekend close was $1,346 an ounce. A review of gold's numbers is

  • Pure gold is 24k
  • US coinage 21.6k
  • Jewelry can be 18k, 14k or 10 k. Class rings re usually 10k and wedding rings 14k.
  • Cold dental crowns are 16k
It is interesting to note folks from India love high karat gold 22k. I recently met a nurse from India that was bedecked with gold. Unbelievable!

It is never too late to redeem your unwanted gold jewelry. Prices are steady. Why not cash into found money?!

MY QUIET FATHERS DAY IN THE BROOKFIELDS

As beautiful as yesterday was today was a real bummer! The highlight saw me behind the wheel for a trip back from Hannaford Brothers. NB Son Josh said "Wanna drive?" I said "yes!"

It felt normal, indeed.

Thoughtful Father's Day gifts from both Ben and Josh filled my cupboard with goodies. Thanks, sons!

Son Ben related he received 9 bee stings yesterday while gardening! Urgent Care!

Tonight at 8 comes the beginning of a series on the Smithsonian Channel on the history of Moon Landing. Should be good! Also have been enjoying America in Color an awesome lesson in U.S. History!

Therapy continues tomorrow.

HAPPY FATHERS DAY 2019

My father, Joseph Emil Potvin was born in Wine Village on July 18, 1913, married on April 18, 1936, died on September 18, 1983 and lived at 18 South Main Street, North Brookfield, MA. He was the fifth of six siblings and had a 14th grade education. Papa Joe was meek and humble and a descent man and taught me much in the years we were together. Dad had a sense of humor, was mechanically inclined, and played the harmonica. He never owned a new car but every car he owned was like new.

My bonding with my father was especially good. We did things together like picking nuts on Donovan Road to his hitting me flies on our lawn on South Main Street.

Dad had two callings in employment: first, as a bedlaster for HH Brown Shoe then as a master carpenter for A.L. Potvin, Builder. In his lifetime dad built over 25 houses in the Brookfields on Summit Terrace and elsewhere.

As Sybil Sandman once said "Everybody liked Joe Potvin" and everybody did!

It is with that thought I remember my father, today, and in this spirit thank him for all he did with me and for me and by me! It is a wise man who is aware of a inseparable bonding exists between a father and a son!

Be sure to log onto "The Old Man" song by John McDermott of the Irish Tenors... the lyrics will touch your heart as it does me!

BETTY GUNDERSON DANCE RECITAL

It has been a beautiful Father's Day Saturday in the Brookfields. Nestled in the hills of Hardwick comes a world-class dance recital from dozens of youth from the area. For 45 years of so Director Betty Gunderson led dozens of dancers at the Eagle Hill School auditorium. One Lily Potvin beamed in smiles as Lil and her friends danced.

I sat in the upper gallery overviewing the performances of students of all ages. Josh and Heidi presented a bouquet of roses after the performances.

I didn't get to go to the West Brookfield Town Common Flea Market. It appears the attendance was moderate. After returning from Hardwick I did manage to sit outside and capture some rays.

MY THURSDAY TRIP TO BOSTON

It was a full Thursday in Boston.! Traffic always plays a role in traveling the 67 miles to Mass General. Son Josh handled the trip like a pro from knowing where to go. He wheeled me around to both doctor's offices in style.

My neurosurgeon had good words for my recovery saying 'You know you have people cheering for you Bob!" The nurse practitioner, too, commented on my obvious overall appearance. We laughed. I obtained 2 x-ray images of my spine and attendant hardware installed!

Today, I had lunch in West Brookfield at the Senior Center.. Nancy D. being my chauffer. It was a Tri-Valley meal. no fir for a kind!

Flag Day today
and birthday for Donald Trump. West Brookfield Flea Market on the common, tomorrow. Hope fully I can make an appearance?

A VISIT BY JEFF EDISON

My main man, Korfil-Jeff pulled up in his spiffy black sports car as I sat in a pink chair in the shade. I had been in the sunshine briefly then reverted to the shade.

Jeff comes to my rescue when I reach my level of incompetency in  electronics.

We got caught up on gossip and the ways of the world. Soon I'll get a ride in his sport car.

Thanks, Jeff!

THE IMPORTANCE OF SOCIALIZING WHILE CONVALESCING

Today I visited the North Brookfield Senior Center after being away for a couple of months! Nancy D. drove me to visit my friends. The reception I received was formidable. Twenty well-wishers received me with open arms. Isn't it good to be wanted I thought?!

Socializing is a very important part of life. Sure everybody has problems and it is fun to compare! Jeannette Foley walked in with a walker and a smile. "I  had a laminectomy  performed 20 years ago, Bob." Old foolks compare notes and empathasize!

Also, I made another appearance at Country Corner and bought a USA Today newspaper. Friends are very important to yours truly!

And so it goes, one day at a time. "Reach out and touch someone!"

WB Band concert tonight. No plans on attending. Go Bruins!

STAMP COLLECTING FOR KIDS AGES 5-12

I have discovered postage stamps are a wonderful tool for learning. Both history and geography can come alive with the curious minds of these kids. My grandchildren Maddie and Evie proved this last night.

I took select stamps of the US from my stamp collection to illustrate the point. It was from the 1938 Presidential Series did I point out how George Washington was featured. I said to the girls GW is the Father of our Country.

It is a no brainer to log onto "Postage stamps Images" to see the colorful varieties. Truth of the matter is stamp collecting is an endangered species and if it is to survive, kids are our hope for the future! Hobbies are healthy!

GEARING UP FOR A VISIT TO MGH ON THURSDAY

I must see 2 doctors on Thursday. The third doctor isn't available that day. Trips to Boston (at any time) are formidable and challenging. Wish Josh and I luck.

The blue skies are gone for now and the mood has changed. I slept well considering the usual nocturnal  interventions.

All bills are coming in PAID IN FULL. A nice feeling. Now to maintain this will be a challenger as I am a spender   hedonistic you know. Making a list for Hannaford Brothers.

I wish Big Papi a speedy and full recovery. The New York Times has a full report on the event as it occurred in the Dominican Republic. Now #34 is a MGH Boston. I can imagine security will be so tight!

NOW EMPLOYING A WALKING CANE

As my therapy progresses I now walk with a cane! The walker is still used.. both allow me to be seen in the community. Today I made appearances in the post office, Country Corner and Dollar General - Brookfield where a new manager has the place looking "ship shape." I complimented the new manager as it really shows. Finally.

Appetite is down today. Must make a list of appealing foods.

Suntan can be dangerous. I backed off quite a but as my nose reveals a slight burn.

Our weather has been wonderful. The forecast is for rain then more sun this week.

SUNTANNED BOB ON A SUNDAY

After three straight days of sitting in the sun I feel good! It seems sunshine perks me up.

Last night's sleep was one of the best ever. The cool evening and attendant bed side fan saw me rest well and for long. At 4:00 am I shut off the Easy Listening music and slept until 6:00 AM.

This afternoon Josh, Chase and I attended a baseball game at Shephard Hill in Dudley and boy did I get a walking workout with my aluminum walker. Then I enjoyed a cheeseburger at Howard's Drive in with onion rings.

Josh is taking care of my dirty laundry and med replacement.

How delightful is the sunshine!

'NICE RESUME. WAIT, YOU'RE HOW OLD?"

Today's New York Times has a feature article on what Americans are experiencing in finding work. The sad truth is if you are "50 or even 40 applicants are considered too old!"

On the personal side of things I am witnessing one Richard B. Johnson, age 75 persevering in finding work in his chosen field.

"I ace the phone interviews" says one job seeker. "They say your resume' speaks volumes. It looks like you're the perfect fit but you come in and you're D>O>A> You can see it in their eyes."

I think Senior Americans are more deserving than settling for minimum wage positions at Walmart!

VINTAGE BOB POTVIN AUCTION VIDEOS

Yesterday for an hour grandson Chase and I watched an auction video of mine from the Marion Varney Estate Auction of July, 1986. It was an On Site auction staged in North Brookfield. Probably 100 folks attended the sale.

This documentary is good as it reveals prices realized at the time. Further I had the opportunity to explain the logistics of creating such an event. Times do change and it would be interesting to see what items of historical interest would sell for today!

Auctions were a big part of my entrepreneurial years. I worked hard and I was good at it. But are auctions a thing of the past? Stay tuned!

THE FRANK COOKE COLLECTION AT AUCTION 9/2006

The Frank Cooke Auction of 2006 fetched over $1,700,000! A big white vinyl tent was pitched behind the Vintage Garage at its North Brookfield location attracting buyers  of Rolls Royce and Stanley Steamers from around the world. I attended the auction. It would be my last lesson from my mentor, Mr. Frank Cooke!

Cooke was truly an entrepreneur and his interests were eclectic. Rare Rolls Royce and others fetched six figures. Antiques and collectibles set records. Cooke's interests ran the gamut. REMEMBERING DIANE ELIZABETH COOKE

Diane Cooke was my first love! Although much younger, Diane would have made me a good wife. She was an equestrian and rode a Morgan named Princess. Diane played the Grand piano.

Our activities included "feeding the horses" and riding them up Fullam Hill Road, NB. Our Puppy Love lasted two years until my leaving for Saint Louis, MO by Greyhound in 1962.

Dating Diane exposed me to a different life style. Frank & Marjorie Cooke were educated and enjoyed some of the finer things in life such as the Springfield-made Rolls Royce and other good things.  They lived in a Mansion at 100 Main Street, NB.

I thought of Diane as a Jackie Kennedy. Decades have gone by since my Little Camelot in North Brookfield existed. Memories of Diane persist today....her name was Diane!

OLD BOB GETS A NEW MATTRESS!

While serving in Vietnam in 1967 much of my time was spent sleeping in my x-ray lab on a canvas litter!I had privacy and slept in air conditioning comfort. It worked. My alarm
was Carl Whitten who knocked on my locked door as Carl headed for the showers.

Today, Son Josh and I shopped at Mattress Firm in Ware. The array of mattresses in the showroom was huge. We knew what we were looking for and the budget I had set ($300.) We found a Sleepy's Relax Pillottop Mattress to fit the bill. I also sprung for a set of percale sheets. How nice.

A tip to buyers is to negotiate desired prices. Josh advises there were three price reductions before it was  over! Now that my new bed is in place I shall report the results in the morning!
