WORLD SERIES GAME 4

Game 4 was truly historic. Texas scored back-to-back 5 games to take a commanding lead. Interestingly enough the Diamondbacks had more hits than the Rangers. Final score Texas 11- Arizona 7. This means Texas can be World Champions with one more victory.

MY COOLIDGE INTERVIEW

In the Spring of 1978 while living in Windsor, Ct I had the honor of meeting Calvin's older son John Coolidge. I was working for the town manger, Al Ilg. My old neighbor Walter Mahoney advised Mr. Coolidge was accessible so I called him at his Farmington home. Mr. Coolidge asked me if I had a job and I said "yes."  I visited John Coolidge at his home. We spoke about his father and Mr.Coolidge replied "Once we were walking by a bank and we stopped. Calvin Coolidge replied If you listen carefully you can hear hear your money working for you !!"  Coolidge also commented on the loss of his brother, Calvin Junior and how it affected his father.. I had future conversations with John Coolidge about his cheese enterprise in Plymouth,VT.

A SENSE OF HISTORY

I once had a professor at St. Louis U who emphasized to us students on having a sense of history. What Father Faherty explained of putting things in perspective. Today I watched on youtube the lives of Coolidge, JFK, LBJ and others. By watching the lives of presidents I am more aware of what went on in America at a given time. Inventions of everything like air-conditioners in cars or Smart-phones steer us into understanding what life is about. Why not log onto youtube and learn as I am doing? Perspective is the word!

MY YOUTUBE REDISCOVERED

Months have gone by since I used youtube. Last night Josh was attempting to reload it when, like magic,I knew speaking into the mike it came back. Since then I have found sites on Cadillac Allante' Calvin Coolidge and LBJ. In viewing the Allante' review I came away thinking of upgrading.Took the red car out for a  spin and am uncertain what to do?  The Calvin Coolidge review was extensive. Coolidge was "a politician with a backbone." Lyndon Baines Johnson review  shows LBJ was  a man of great power. My Monday was excellent and I enjoyed my Jolly Time pop corm for supper along with orange juice.

A LASTING MEMORY OF MY VIETNAM SERVICE

My time as a soldier was 1 year 9 month and 2 days. As a draftee I rolled the dice and taking my chances.I came within 2 days of being a Marine! My friends all were objecting me being a "jar head" so I took my chances. I was almost age 24 and had a job with Aetna. Basic training was in Fort Knox, Kentucky. This assignment had me running the mile and doing push-ups. Next it was to Fort Sam Houston Texas where I was trained to learn human anatomy and to be an x-ray technician.Next to Fort Dix for OJT onto Vietnam.  I was "easy" taking my assignment in stride. My job was at the 345th Dispensary serving 5 doctors and 2 dentists. The x-ray lab was air-conditioned.The visiting Australians became my friends. My R&R was to Sydney. I truly was "One Lucky Soldier!" It was like a Masters Degree!. E-5.

MY RAINY SATURDAY

This Saturday saw more intense rain all season. In driving to North Brookfield then to Ware to Nat Falk the flooding of the roads was amazing. I picked up a black business suit which I may use in my potential speaking engagements. A spiffy yellow vest was omitted so I will return on some sunshine day to pick it up. Josh came by and took all dirty laundry for washing. I reviewed my notes on the History of Television. It will take some time to absorb it and blog on it. Did watch a special on Henry Ford for review. Despite the rain my Saturday was excellent!

HISTORY OF TELEVISION

My Friday had interruptions  and delays. I was researching the televisions when my printer would not print. Then the MLB Playoffs came on at a time when I planned on going to the Legion. When I drove down in the rain the hall was filled. I decided to call it quits and returned home to watch the game between the Astros and the Texas Rangers.A credible fight ensued then the manager Dusty Baker flipped out and got ejected from the game! The Astros won the game with a late inning homer then my printer started working! I now have my assignment to research the History of Television!

Ludwig van Beethoven

Ludwig van Beethoven was an extremely sophisticated man. He lived to age 56 and was deaf the later part of his life. I became interested in Beethoven at age 20 when one Frank Cooke was playing the Pastoral, symphony and said to me "name it and I'll turn it off!" In college I bought an album featuring the Pastoral and learned to appreciate classical music. At that time the Late Paul Power and I were exposed to Beethoven's 9th symphony when an evening news featured it. Over the years I have grown to listen to Beethoven for relaxation. Also, the years I've learn to like the Emperor Concerto. Wikipedia has a marvelous recap of Beethoven. Check it out and learn as I am doing!

MR. MARTIN D. LEACH - AGAIN

The highlight of my four years at the North Brookfield High School  came on October 8, 1956. Mr. Leach used the intercom to share his enthusiasm in telling of Yankee pitcher Don Larsen pitching a perfect game against the Brooklyn Dodgers. I was the gofer for Mr. Leach.I used to use Mr. Coture's Ford to drive up to St. Joseph School to pick up students.I did other chores for Mr. Leach and on his death I rang the bell in the NB Town Hall. Today, I listened to a tape entitled "Mr.Baseball - Connie Mack." Mack was Mr. Leach's hero. The Leach legacy is long remembered!

CALVIN COOLIDGE "HAVE FAITH IN MASSACHUSETTS"

Coolidge was an intellect. In reviewing his book "Have Faith In Massachusetts"  this book was published in 1916. The content of the book reveals Coolidge as a man with words. He gave speeches all over the Commonwealth including a speech at Holy Cross College. In the front of this book is a photograph of CC as governor along with a his unique signature. I will remove this and frame it for my office. This man Coolidge was well qualified for the Presidency.

ROBERT LOUIS POTVIN

COOLIDGE THE POLITICIAN

Calvin Coolidge  attended Amherst College  and graduated with honors in 1895. CC excelled in public speaking and located himself in Northampton, Mass. CC was a lawyer handling real estate deals, wills and bankruptcies. CC was preparing him for politics. CC began a quiet but methodical climb up the political ladder as mayor of Northampton, as a state congressman. as a state senator and as lieutenant and as lieutenant governor. CC marries Grace Goodhue in 1903 and went on a honeymoon trip to Montreal for  two weeks but it was cut short by a week as CC wanted to return to work. Grace Coolidge was a vivacious individual. The Coolidges had two sons: John and Calvin Jr.  I interviewed John as previously mentioned.

CALVIN COOLIDGE AGAIN

This Thursday was special. I sat out in the sunshine for an hour then I went to the Book Bear to see if they had any books on Calvin Coolidge. Low and behold noted author J.R.Greene was there stating he wrote a book on Coolidge entitled "Calvin Coolidge in 100 objects." I bought a copy and had J.R. autograph it.  I also found a book entitled "Have Faith in Massachusetts." by Calvin Coolidge! I also was given a copy of my book "Starting an Antique Business. These books were given by me when I ran for Congress in 2000. Also spoke with Sister Jan later in the day. My Thursday was excellent!

CALVIN COOLIDGE

I've been a fan of Calvin Coolidge since collecting stamps when I was a boy! CC was featured on the $5.00 stamp  Scott's 834 in the presidential  series of 1938. In college I wrote a paper entitled "The Man Behind The Myth." Over the years my curiosity grew as CC was a graduate of Amherst College and mayor of Northampton, Mass. CC He went on to serve in the Massachusetts House of Representatives, state congressman, as a state senator and as a lieutenant governor. Coolidge gained national fame when, as governor,he is quoted on the Boston police strike "there is no right to strike against the public safety by anybody, anywhere, any time." CC won at the National Convention nod,as the vice-presidential candidate. He was on the ticket with Senator Warren G. Harding of Ohio. While visiting his father in Plymouth, Vermont,  Harding died and CC was sworn into the presidency by his father!Coolidge was a quiet, no-nonsense man. He had a reputation in being honest and this helped him gain honesty in the government. ' The chief business of the American people is business."CC remained popular throughout his presidency. The death of his  youngest son while in office put Coolidge in a depression. He decided not to seek re-election and retired to his home in Northampton , MA. He died of a heart attack at age 60. NB I had the pleasure of interviewing CC son John Coolidge at his home in Connecticut!

ESTATE AUCTION REVIEWS

My day began trying to get through to USA TODAY requesting a reprint of JFK'S AMERICA. It seems all departments have a prompt or leave a message. I did leave a message but nobody returned my call. I called the WBES requesting info on the Veterans Day program. Left a message.. nobody called back. Did get food and gasoline. I have copies of two auctions from 1994 and 1997. The results are valuable. One is a clock auction the other is a professor's estate. I limit my viewing of national news!

ATTENDING THE 1987 WORLD SERIES IN ST. LOUIS

St Louis was no stranger to Ben and Josh! In early 1980s "Kids Flew Free" and we flew to St. Louis. In 1987 the Potvin family returned to St. Louis for the World Series. I obtained tickets for the three games from Dr. Arthur Pappas. Ben recalls "being pulled from school" Josh recalled the vacation was  "fun!"St. Louis was hopping from viewing the Gateway Arch to seeing Anheiser-Bush with the team of Clidesdale pulling a wagon around the field. People were UP for the event. Attendance was 53,347 for each of all three games. We sat in center field on a "very chilly night." I returned to St. Louis University with my sons for them to see what it was all about. We had diner with a professor.. maybe Father Bosken? On the flight back to Boston Josh obtained autographs from members of the Boston Bruins. Our vacation to the World Series - Priceless!

Now they head to Arlington, Texas and may sweep the Birds in 4 straight! The New England Patriots got zonked on their home turf. Time for Belichik to retire?
