TRANQUILITY HILL WB

Blood glucose 80

The day began clear and in the low 40s. I slept with the windows open and enjoyed a good rest. After doing laundry in Warren I settled down to a day of television. The highlight of the day was a lengthy documentary on the KENNEDY Legacy.

At 5 I drove over to Birch Hill to witness Josh cutting up a fallen tree. He asked me to drive Chase to Quabaug for soccer practice. Then I returned to Birch Hill. In the peace and quiet of the moment  enjoying a fire in the pit. The warmth felt good. I realized how tranquil it was compared to my Route 9 thunder.

I mentioned wanting SKYPE on my I Phone and Josh obliged. He connected me with SonBen in Belmont, NC. We enjoyed seeing his family and the Potvin kids were amused. It has been years since I skyped with my friend in Australia!

This Monday was diverse and pleasant.

MY BASEBALL SUNDAY

Blood glucose 113

This Sunday was quiet for me. I did watch CBS Sunday Morning with Jane Pauley and enjoyed the feature with Olivia Newton-John! Olivia is now age 71 and is a survivor of breast cancer and other issues. She is a rancher in So. Cal.

This day was beautiful and I took advantage of the brilliant sunshine by basking in it for about an hour. Then I reverted to watching Boston Red Six baseball. The Sox defeated the Washington Nationals. They have won six of their last ten games. There were home runs and Bobby Dalbec began his career with a hr! The Yankees and Mets played a double header to fill up the day.

Didn't see Josh today. Suspect he may have had his boat on the lake?

AC is off and the windows are up. Monday details as usual!

A RAINY SATURDAY WITH A VISIT FROM DICK JOHNSON

The mood was different with rainy Saturday. The TRUMP forces were tiny yet flags were waiving. It seems the organization will grow in the next two months.

A call to sister Jan was made after a month passing. Jan's happy doing her quilting. As I was

Lucy Stone's stone foundation   Coy Hill

driving over to Birch Hill Road I noticed a Chevrolet truck with OZONE vanity plates. Richard B Johnson had traveled from Leominster to survey the storm's damage.

Dick likes to drive so we headed west again towards Amherst. Our travel is of small talk about years past. Dick turns 77 on October 3! We had trouble finding a place for lunch. Debbie Wong in Ware only does Take Out. Eventually we settled on Janines Frostee in Ware. Masks and all I had a strawberry frappe, something I haven't had in years. Dick settled for a Hamburg and onion rings.

The rest of the day was spent watching baseball and later NASCAR from Daytona where they actually had a crowd of 20,000!

Tomorrow promises to be  clear and cooler.

MEET CHASE ROBERT POTVIN - ASPIRING ENTREPRENEUR

Blood glucose 101

At age 15, Chase Robert is demonstrating skills that spell success. He has been working this summer with senior citizens doing yard work and other aspects of manual labor. The best part is Chase is learning and earning. His bank account is growing exponentially.

Chase is also a scholar at Quabaug. In addition he is also an artist! Recently he gave me a rendition of Fenway Park.

Soon Chase will turn 16 and will be driving. He speaks of getting a small truck bought with his earnings.

College is but a few years away. "I want to attend a college like DUKE where the weather will be warmer." He is on his way and
we all wish him well!

MEET EVIE POTVIN - A REMARKABLE 7 YEAR OLD

The youngest child of Josh & Heidi is truly an enterprising individual! Evie goes at life with abandon. She is demonstrating talents in many areas. I say someday Evie will be a Mechanical Engineer.

Evie has a certain dexterity with her creative hands. Recently she built some bird houses. For her birthday Renee White gave her a carpenter's satchel filled with diminutive hand tools. The gift truly expands her thinking. I am blown away by this wonderful gift! The best is yet to come from Evie!

The magnitude of Sunday's tornado has left a myriad of huge trees on the ground. Some houses have been damaged.. others are listing. It will take years to clean up matters.

I watched TRUMP from New Hampshire for a good hour. The Donald is coming on strong. Amazing

Time for a shower and bed!

A SULTRY THURSDAY IN THE BROOKFIELDS

Blood glucose 99

The sun didn't shine this Thursday! My routine saw me skip through the AM and to NB after lunch. I got caught in a shower as I finished my time at Hannaford shopping. Then I got interested in watching a lengthy feature on Adolph Hitler on the Smithsonian Channel.

Hitler was brilliant in some ways and crazy in others. He was very wealthy, didn't pay taxes and accrued millions of dollars in collecting fine arts. I enjoyed following his demise!

The foul weather changed plans for Evie's 7th birthday party. Heidi and crew traveled to Boston to the Shark display. I visited with family at Ron & Chrissies on their return. Josh and I went to Ware-Walmart. I remained in the Toyota. Did receive a nice colored family picture from Ben & Allison and Savvy.

Didn't watch any news tonight and don't plan on watching TRUMP!

My Thursday was good!

The price of 90% silver coins is up. Depending on condition and rarity you can expect to get $17.50 on the dollar. This is what a dealer will pay you for 50c, 25c, 10c circulated coins dated 1964 and before.

Silver dollars can bring a premium. Morgan dollars of higher grades may fetch $23 each. Peace dollars will bring $19.00 each. 40% clad Kennedy halves are worth $5.00 each.  Wheat-back Lincoln cents are worth 2.5 cents each.

Prices will vary depending on the London fix.

CLEAN-UP

Blood glucose 84

Clean-up from Sunday's storm will take weeks, months and yes, even years!
Readers are encouraged to drive down Wickaboag Valley Road, and up Birch Hill Road to get the full picture of what occurred. Tree damages are incredible. Significant tree damage can be seen in the general area.

In other news, the cool weather for the moment has arrived. Temperatures begin the day at fifty. This is a relief.  We have had our share of 90 degree days.

Josh lost his  big white Adirondack chair to the storm. It can be rebuilt. He has a spiffy new Generac generator for future use.

Charlene Whitman called from SC last night telling of a new book of hers that has been published. Congrats!

SonJosh turns 46 today!  Happy birthday, son!

THE AFTERMATH OF THE STORM

Blood glucose 111

West Brookfield seems to be the hardest hit in the area. Tree surgeons and bucket trucks are all about town. Several homes have trees lying on them. The path of the storm seems to be Northeast at the junction of Routes 9 & 67.

Throughout our town are divided trees... those that are decayed... some huge divisions others small. High winds took down significant branches. The outstanding tree down at the root ball comes at Wickaboag Valley Road  beyond Birch Hill Road. The size of the tree is truly amazing!!

Cleanup will take time! Our only hope is we don't get hit again. Sunday night saw pea-size hail fall a little before 7. As mentioned Josh's anemometer registered a peak gust of 98mph. I don't know if any other instruments in town had similar recordings?!

More storms on the way! Cooler weather tomorrow!!

WIDESPREAD WIND DAMAGE IN WEST BROOKFIELD

Huge trees were toppled by the tornadic forces winds from last night's thunderstorm in West Brookfield! The evidence is real as trees lie across the New Braintree Road and Wickaboag Valley Road. Birch Hill Road saw the devastation. Here on Route 9 heavy winds and rain were not as serious. I lost power for a few minutes.

This is the third such tempest to hit this Summer. Houses on North Main had trees falling and leaning on homes. Some homes are still without power as I write this blog . Josh reports a peak gust at 98 mph!?

More storms are forecast later today and tonight.

A SUNDAY TRIP TO WALMART

It is hot and Josh invited me to go to Ware-Walmart. Summer seems to be lingering! It is 92 degrees! We used a scooter-buggy as we roamed the mammoth spaces of the store. He got water, drinks and other goodies. The store was loaded with shoppers.

A SURPRISE VISIT BY DICK JOHNSON

I had been thinking about my friend Dick Johnson when a "hello" came from the bedroom. It was "Johnson" without a hat! He had been released from the hospital several weeks ago and was out for a joy ride. It was good to see him even though his visit was brief!

I went out for a ride about WB when I came upon an incredible snapping turtle down by Doc Bills. It was the biggest such turtle I've ever seen. Amazing!

This particular Saturday was cloudy and more humid. Both Chase and Josh mowed my lawn and trimmed with the weed-whacker. The Poodle looks real good.

Did watch much of the NASCAR race from Dover.

On the political scene came two large flag-waving groups of BIDEN and TRUMP on the common. The Biden forces were bigger this week. Very colorful!

AN OUTDOOR THEATER ATOP BIRCH HILL

A new dimension graces the yard atop Birch Hill: A 50+ inch HDTV! Josh has mounted this spiffy flat screen for the enjoyment of guests. Also, a huge  white Adirondack chair adds dimension to the grounds. Creative and amazing!

My Friday was usual. Picked up my dry cleaning in Spencer then went to Hannaford for some grub. The remainder of my afternoon was spent relaxing by watching LBJ on YouTube. This documentary fills a need for me every now and then.

My Friday was comforting and enjoyable. The discomfort in the back is formidable and must be endured!

AN IDYLLIC MOMENT ATOP BIRCH HILL

Today was a slow day for me. The discomfort in my right thigh, leg and back from yesterday's procedure slowed me down! I took advantage of this perfect August day by sitting in the sun.. something I haven't done for two months!

There was some baseball to watch in the afternoon. It is sad to watch a contest in a fanless stadium!

The highlight of this beautiful late-August Thursday came with my visit to Josh atop Birch Hill. The gentle breeze and a bottle of O'Doul's set the tone. Ambitious Josh saw him do some edging as I rocked in my special rocking chair.

I got caught up with the events of the Democratic Convention by watching NBC  Lester Holt. I also viewed Trump briefly. Same ole same ole!

It was a good day!

JOE BIDEN'S 1967 CORVETTE

Joe Biden owns a 1967 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray convertible! It was a wedding gift from his father in August of 1967. His father ran a Chevrolet dealership in Delaware. It is capable of going 0-60 in 5.8 seconds! If he wind the presidency Biden will not be able to drive it!

"The Secret Service forbids the commander in chief to drive!" His dad paid $5,600 for the car. Full details may be found in the USA Today "Biden's Corvette has a story behind it."

In other matters we enjoyed a rainfall for about an hour or so. We'll take it!

A COOLER SUNNY MONDAY

Gradually the August days are cooling off. Today saw temps in the low eighties as I went about my business of doing laundry and shopping. Plus, I power sprayed my Honda. I enjoyed slices of watermellon as I ate some shrimp coctail. It was afternoon when I sat down and relaxed a bit and a nap. The President was in Minnesota speaking.. same ole same ole! I went over to Josh's house at five. We brought Chase to soccer practice before enjoying pizza around the campfire. Josh & Heidi had friends for a pool party. Conversation is always good with contemporary guests. I decided not to watch the Democratic Convention. My rest is more important! This Monday was a good Monday! Josh just called saying my blog is not appearing on FACEBOOK! He says he can fix it! ROBERT LOUIS POTVIN

A TACO SUNDAY ON BIRCH HILL

The temperature didn't go past 62 degrees all day! I wore my black jacket when I drove to Country Corner to fetch the newspaper and kept it on all day.I didn't use the AC. It was a srange weather day. Heavy clouds prevailed and even a little rain fell s I arrived at the Potvin's home. Heidi and kids were just geting back from food shopping as I waited for Josh to come in from wood chopping near the huge American flag. I was impressed in seeing how the kids helped Mommy put away all the groceries. Then it was 'Taco Sunday!' This Sunday was another television day from Jane Pauley to the Red Sox - Yankee game in the Bronx. Pauley had features on the famed Ryman Auditorium with Cheryl Crow. American Pickers is always a favorite for me as I guess values. It never ceases to amaze me how some collectors are true hoarders. Some values are high. I like the way Mike and partner employ the bartering techniques. Tomorrow will be laundry and food shopping. I have no idea what to expect on the weather scene?! If it's decent I'll power-spray the trusty Honda Accord! ROBERT LOUIS POTVIN

A CLOUDY COOLER SATURDAY

Blood glucose 116 This Saturday was at least ten degrees cooler and the sun wasn't out most of the day. It was good for a change. Another TRUMP rally opposite the Quaboag Nursing Home on Route 9.It seems this location is inappropriate given the nursing home rooms are across the street?! There were local folks in the crowd of flags and banners.Police take notice! SonJosh and family returned from the Cape.Saw Josh later in the afternoon when he was mowing. It is like a desert.. a drought! We need rain badly and lots of it. My afternoon was between watching baseball and the 6th Symphony of Beethoven! St. Louis defeated Detroit then tonight the New York Yankees ae host to the Boston Red Sox. Sorry but it just isn't the same. The announcers lack enthusiasm in the absence of a cheering crowd! And then there's the president on prime time. He's like a broken record reassuring Americans everything is going to be OK! What about the mess with the Post Office? Hopefully Sunday will be brighter. I look forward to the news programs and Jane Pauley on CBS-Sunday! ROBERT LOUIS POTVIN

WHY I MISS MAJOR LEAGUE BASEBALL

I miss Major League baseball for what it gave to me in raising Ben & Josh! From the get-go I found trips to Fenway Park in Boston added a dimension to my being a good dad. It meant understanding the game and all that goes along with attending a game from autograph soliciting to roaming all around the Park. As my sons emerged into their teen years the passion in learning the ropes grew. From Fenway Park to games at Yankee Stadium began our quest. We saw Reggie Jackson and his Rolls Royce to a spilled beer and a fan lapping it up on the stairs. As the boys grew our fanaticism grew. It wasn't enough to attending one park.My auctioneer membership saw us attend conventions in Philadelphia, Atlanta, Houston and beyond. It seems wherever the Potvin family traveled our baseball love grew! The beauty of having friends gave me access to obtaining All-Star tikets to Cincinatti & Toronto. Tickets were available from Dr. Pappas for Series game in St. Louis & Toronto. It was a dream come true! In 1987 I pulled Ben & Josh from classes and flew to St. Louis! We attended three games and obtained autographs. This one vacation proved to be the highlight of our lives. We have been to 20 stadiums in all! Toronto proved to be fun in attending the 1991 All-Star Game and the 1993 World Series! But all of this has changed!Crowdless stadiums and carboard faces prevail. It's just not the same! Will things ever return to the way it was? ROBERT LOUIS POTVIN

A NEW AIR CONDITIONER FOR THE POODLE

Another scorcher in the Brookfields! It was bright and hot and I got my laundry done by 10:00 am.

My window air conditioner died over night necessitating the purchase of a new one at LOWES! I drove to Ware and didn't fool around. They had many in stock and I opted for a spiffy GE one room unit. With the military discount I paid $333.00.

The heat of mid-morning told me it had to be installed today... and that it was. After inquiring a bit Scott Nichols came to the rescue. Scott unloaded and unpacked the new unit. Scott is a good kid and installed it to perfection in less than an hour. It is set at 68 degrees and has been cooling the house down since being installed. DONE!

Next I traveled to NB to Hannaford and spent $30 on food. Then I came home for a late afternoon nap.

Had a pleasant afternoon visit from a young man interested in learning about gold and silver. My Sunday was one of introspection. I have a lot on my plate as the saying goes and I know how to "decide." Monday will be laundry and food as usual and I will call Josh to discuss some very "important business." Enough said. ANOTHER BIG TRUMP RALLY ON WEST BROOKFIELD COMMON!

The biggest Trump rally was held this morning! Colorful flags and banners graced the enthusiastic crowd. One thing different today... some BIDEN sympathizers... a small crowd appeared for the first time. I think this will swell as the season continues. I was saddened to read the obituary of neighbor and friend Gene Caille! I roamed around the Brookfields after finding the EXXON Mobil station closed for credit in Warren.I looked to use my gift card from Ben and Alli. I did find the station in East Brookfield open and purchased $15.00. Thanks! Speaking of TRUMP, a signing of Executive Orders featured his appearance on FOX and others. The guy got testy with reporters when questioned and shut them off quickly. NASCAR-Michigan- was full of crashes today. Kevin Harvick won in a shootout! A NEW USED CAR IN THE MAKING!

This Friday was full of suprises! I went about my business of newspapers and going to Hannaford for a refund on the "bad berries." Josh and Chase came around and picked up the debris from the storm then JOSH mowed the lawn. Chase was bushed from his working two other jobs. Josh invited me to his home at the end of the day. I accepted. While there Chase and Josh were kidding about a car for sale on Lake Street, WB.They depreciated it's appeal. I felt I wanted to check things out. Chase and I drove to the site. It is a brown 2003 Lincoln Town Car with low miles. I liked it and put a deposit on it! My Honda Accord has 260,000 miled on it. Time to upgrade! Details to follow! ROBERT LOUIS POTVIN

A FAIR THURSDAY

This Thursday was uneventful for the most part. I did spend most of an hour replacing all medications in my pill cady. I do this a couple times a month to remain current. It seems to pay off.

My trip to NB to Hannaford's revealed several large trees downed by the storm. In particular was a huge Maple downed on King Street, NB. A tree surgeon was cleaning it up. Lesser branches were everywhere. People are conscientious.

I made an error in buying some berries in a big tray without looking at the price! Would you believe $15? And I thought it was watermelon to boot? Return to sender!

Hannaford is in a tizzy! Nothing is in its place! Help!

The afternoon saw Chasing Classic Cars with Wayne Carine for two hours. His crew did a classic restoration of a Bugatti which won 2nd prize in competition. Reminded me of my wire brushing  a Rolls Royce for Frank Cooke  in 1962. Detailed restoration of classic cars is exacting.

Josh asked me to ride shotgun as he drove Maddie and Chase to game practice. No camp fire today.

I enjoyed Jeopardy replay tonight Eddie blind contestant!

THE STORM'S AFTERMATH

The mess left behind from the tropical storm was formidable. As I drove to town at 8:00AM Town employees were raking the lawn on the Common. Small loose branches were everywhere. SonJosh admitted to picking up branches at 6:00 AM! My yard wasn't too bad except for one section.

It was a partly sunny day. I didn't go far until late afternoon when I traveled to Birch Hill. Maddie needed a ride to basketball practice however the time was changed. I sat in the rocker taking in the surrounds. Large branches, too, were downed by winds that must have been 40 mph. Boston weathermen reported major power outages. To say the least it was one for the books... and it's only August 5th!

The image is of Mt. Washington!

Received and paid my National Grid light bill: $126.12. Considering the AC has been on 24/7 for the month I can take it! Other folks had higher bills I'm sure.

Food shopping tomorrow. Josh may come around to clean?

THE TUMULTUOUS WINDS ON BIRCH HILL

Blood glucose 90 Weight 168lbs. Overcast skies prevailed until mid-afternoon then the rains came! Soon after the winds picked up and by 5:00 pm it was blowing a gale. I even had difficulty opening my car door at Josh's! It was that windy from the East. I solicited a haircut from Josh-the-Barber who seemingly was eager to cut my hair.Actually Josh delighted in the process and laughed with every move. Little Evie observed the process as she is a Jr. barber having cut dad's hair once or twice! Earlier in the day I cleared up my office a bit and responded to my proposed 60th Class Reunion. I also wrote another letter to Diane, my Chicago penpal! This Tuesday was quiet except for the weather! Hopefully tomorrow will be sunny! ROBERT LOUIS POTVIN

A NINETY DEGREE MONDAY

This Monday was good. The sun came out early and lasted all day. It was Monday-laundry.. make the bed.. rest.. then off to NB to Hannaford's. I took my bag of change and received $7.06!

The afternoon was spent watching the Smithsonian Channel. Two features kept me interested...War II in the Pacific and Moon Landing. I have seen both of these many times and enjoy refreshing my memory.

Josh had a fire going when I arrived at 5:00 PM. Chase asked me to drive my Honda! Time is growing short for him. He'll turn 16 in November. I told him how important Drivers Education is! Evie was friendly asking me to play UNO. I said yes and beat her!

Looks like we will be getting winds from the hurricane... not so much rain.

One day at a time! Full moon not to be seen! Haircut tomorrow!

A CLOUDY, RAINY, AUGUST SUNDAY

A new month gave us a change in weather and mood. The best part came with interesting television! I enjoy Jane Pauley and CBS Sunday Morning. This hour and a half has a variety worth watching. Then came Aerial America - Connecticut.

I lived in Windsor, CT for three years.. June 1975 - 1978. My corporate divorce with Aetna allowed me to grow... first by becoming An Economic Development Aide for the Town of Windsor.. then striking out on my own.  It was then and there I decided to be an antique dealer/auctioneer.

The afternoon programming gave me American Pickers. Later NASCAR came from Loudon, NH. Brad Koslowski won the race in fine style.

I shot over to visit Josh who gave me an unsolicited tour of Lake Wickaboag properties. Very comprehensive and revealing. Tonight I watched more of the same until SIXTY MINUTES came on after the NBC news.

And so it went...an August Sunday. Looks like a rainy beginning to the week. Good luck to Allison with her cataract surgery on Tuesday!

ANOTHER TRUMP RALLY IN WEST BROOKFIELD

This week's Trump Rally was bigger! Situated on the Town Common across from the Quaboag Nursing Home banners, flags and signs filled the air. Seems to be a weekly event from Trumpsters!

I spent the day watching television. No NASCAR. Sox and Yankees play tonight. Yawn.

Drove over the Potvins at 5:00. Josh invited me in for a swim or a boat ride. I opted for another boat ride. Maddie was being pulled on a blue plastic board. She did well but it was rough going overall. Josh & Chase helped me on and off of the craft.

Josh sent my birthday photographs to Ben by phone. Nice shots.
