THE WRATH OF TAMPA BAY

Blood glucose 115 Weight 116.4lbs The morning started out being cloudy and by mid-afternoon the sun came out.It was hot. The big news is the ashphalt paving being done in the center of West Brookfield. Palmer Paving and all heavy equipment are making order out of chaos.Traffic was tied up much of the afternoon. I was going to get gas for the Allante' when I discovered the tie up so I drove directly over to Josh's.He was headed for soccer with Maddie so I returned home. I watched the Mets and Marlins play ball in the afternoon and the Sox/Tampa Bay at night. Not good at all!And to think of all the games in the next week.Mercy! Spoke with Bill Gross, college roomate living in Vancouver,WA,about hearing aids. Today's New York Times has an in-depth feature about hearing aids. I think I'm ready to schedule an appointment with the audiologist at the Worcester VA. ROBERT LOUIS POTVIN

THE LAST MONDAY IN AUGUST

Blood glucose 95 The day proved to be hot and humid. I didn't have anything planned other than bringing Josh to Sturbridge to pick up his Toyota van. CR Tire did brakes and added two new tires.I enjoyed a cheeseburger from Howard's at noon.Seems things are more and more quiet and they were closed for supper? I drove the Allante' to Birch Hill but the rumble of thunder prompted me to head home. A light rain came about an hour later. Sox are playing at the TROP tonight. Bobby Dalbec homered but the Rays are leading 2-1.Jeopardy! has Buzzy Cohen as guest host for the Tournement of Champions.Cooler less humid for tomorrow. ROBERT LOUIS POTVIN

A SUNDAY TO FORGET

Things didn't go well for the Red Sox. After pitching No Hit ball for four innings the Sox gave up a 4-0 lead.Bobby Dalbec And Raphael Devers hit homers and ended up giving up the game. The three hour 20 minute delay proved to be a disaster. Now they fly to Tampa Bay. Fasten your seat belts! I did laundry and food shopping then had a cheeseberger at Howard's. I returned to have some Cherry vanilla ice cream from Lilly P. Took Josh to Sturbridge for repairs to his van. Will return tomorrow pm for a pick-up.Another cool cloudy day. I want blue skies! ROBERT LOUIS POTVIN

HIGH DRAMA IN CLEVELAND

The highlight this Saturday came in watching the Boston Red Sox defeat the Cleveland in extra innings.J D Martinez belted a 3 run homer to seal the victory for Boston. The two teams were knotted in a 2-2 tie most of the game. Neither team knew how to clear the bases. Instead they left men on the bases. It was Boston's third victory. I began my day with getting my oil changed at Ken's in East Brookfield.$29.00. I do want to mention how cool the weather was with a much lower humidity.Johnson came and we headed West again to the Quabbin onto Ludlow where we at a McDonalds. The fried were tiny. Maybe it's time to try a Burger King?Spoke briefly with Chase & Josh who were headed to a party at friends. The rain began around six keeping me from traveling to Hannaford NB.Laundry tomorrow AM. "FANTASTIC" NEWS FROM DR. DEY!

Getting into seeing my doctor was time-consuming. I had my blood drawn and waited over an hour to be called. When I walked into his office I was greeted by a gentleman wearing a navy blue blazer, a shirt to match his coat and trousers. He was all smiles as we shook hands. He had my results on his computer screen. I asked him what were the results. 'FANTASTIC' was Dr. Dey's response. He went over each category and was pleased when he reviewed the findings. Dr. Dey is my friend and I have been seeing him for decades. "Come back in 6 months" after reviewing my vitals. Josh had waited patiently in the hall overlooking Historic Boston. We had a terrible delay on the Mass Pike. We arrived in WB over an hour late.Went to the dry cleaners with my weekly batch of soiled shirts and Bermuda shorts.Stopped at McDonalds-Spencer for a Cheeseburger, fries and Coke.$4.90. Josh invited me over for 5:00 for our usual dily visit. Today was Evie's 8th birthday. Gave her a :"Birthday Girl" card and cash donation. Gave Josh his birthday card and cash donation. My card was a hit! LOL.It was a Friday to remember! ROBERT LOUIS POTVIN

ANOTHER STEAMY DAY

The heat wave continues. I drove to Ware early in the day to Walmart get a case of Equate nutritional drink. A case of 24 costs $24.95. The Mart Cart made my visit easy.It was both loaded and unloaded by helpers.I enjoyed another Cheeseburger from Howard's for lunchat a cost of $3.89. Sure beats the food in NB. Josh turns 47 today. We spoke late in the day.He cancelled plans for Evie's practice. Once again it was all about watching baseball. Bobby Dalbec homered early in the Sox night game. Tonight I called sister Jan. I speak with her once a month. Chase stopped by for a brief visit before his soccer practice. Tomorrow I travel to Boston to Mass General. Josh picks me up at 7:30 AM to see Dr. Dey. Evie turns 8! A STEAMY WEDNESDAY IN THE BROOKFIELDS

Blood glucose 118 This day was hot from beginning to end. The comfort of AC and a high speed fan makes my home comfortable.I ate in NB and didn't find the meatloaf good. I think I need a break from institutional cooking. A cheeseburger from Howard's is in order! I found the St. Louis Cardinal -Detroit Tigers game relaxing. The Cards won in xtra innings. Nice. I drove over to Josh's at 5:00 and enjoyed an O'Douls and snacks. Josh built a tiny fire as we talked about "old times." He will be 47 tomorrow! I will meet with him at 5:15 at the West Brookfield Elementary School where Evie will have soccer practice. We made plans for my Friday trip to Mass General and Dr. Dey. The Sox are playing now as I write. ROBERT LOUIS POTVIN

THE DAYS ARE GROWING SHORTER!

September comes into our lives in a week! Although the days are noticeably shorter the heat continues. Today was hot and muggy.I had American Chop Suey and a nice Garden Salad at the North Brookfield Senior Center.Earlier I did all of my banking and got my "cash" for Josh. He came around at mid-afternoon for a ride to Birch Hill. Chase dropped him off after bringing his boat in for repairs. At 4:00 I enjoyed a Cheeseburger at Howard's along with some of Lily's Black Raspberry Ice Cream. The cup goes for 3 sittings.I watched Oakland lose to Seattle late into the afternoon.Because it was "pay day" it was a good day! Tonight the Red Sox are off on the wrong foot! ROBERT LOUIS POTVIN

A MONDAY FULL OF SURPRISES

Blood glucose 90 Weight 165lbs. The big news in rock music is the obituary of Don Everly of the Everly Brothers fame. I sent the full obit to Son Ben.Don was 84 with Phill dying in 2014."Ebony Eyes" is one of my favorites. A little known fact is the Everly Brothers were U.S. MARINES! I gave him a copy of the 500-Homer Club listing the 28 members.Barry Bonds leads it with 762 homers. Henry Aaron 755 and Babe Ruth 714.We delighted in the grand slam hit in the 11th for a 8-4 victory by the Sox.It was fun having Chase savor the victory! ROBERT LOUIS POTVIN

NOT A GOOD SUNDAY FOR BUSINESS

Never have I seen the laundomat so busy than today! All the dryers were taken and the washers full. Now if I can only find my black face cloth! The inclement weather began as I began.I came back in the rain and measured only .75 inches all day. My day was cut out oF watching MLB. The Sox and Yankees were postponed so I opted to watch all other games. The big news was Miguel Cabrera hitting his 500th home run. It took him a while to reach this hallmark. Chase, Josh and Ben called me around 5:00 PM.I had New England Clam Chowder for lunch and a banana and peanut butter for supper. A SATURDAY OF BEAUTIFUL CLOUDS & SUN

Blood glucose 93 The morning skies were beautiful! Dick Johnson drove his Silverado up Coy Hill on the Warren side. As we climbed in elevation the cumulonimbus clouds graced the August skies. The WARE radio towers are at an 1177 elevation.Dick tells of having lived in a small house while an employee of the radio station. Today the road was terrible necissating "Driver Dick" to back up a bit before turning around. This Saturday saw us travel towards Route 20 then onto Holland and Wales. We ended up eating at the McDonalds in Sturbridge. The afternoon sun was hot. I visited my "Ice Cream Lily P" for my usual black raspberry cup and remained in my air conditioned chalet watching baseball. I refused to get caught in the hurricane speculation. Son Josh came by and mowed my lawn.To me it was HOT! My Saturday was good. Tomorrow I do laundry in Warren. ROBERT LOUIS POTVIN

HENRI SPECULATION

The media is smothered with speculation on the hurricane. It seems there's too much information with models and weather men. I try to ignore much of what is being submitted. I remember Hurricane Bob in 1991. I had a Billy Joel t shirt from Storm Front and raised it on my flag pole at 33 Birch Hill Rd. WB.I will confer with "Johnson" for a consensus. Dick and I go way back. The benefactors to the hype are the grocery stores. If you really want to hget technical the Hurricane of 1938 saw winds of 110mph atop Bell Hill, N. Brookfield. It will be fun to look back after Henri makes his mark. The day was quiet. I ate at the W.B.Senior Center with Nancy D. and Jane. Braise Beef. I liked the Lorna Doone the best! I have no comment on the "Dred Sox." Josh had a small campfire with friends visiting.Jayson Ostrout mounted four spiffy truck tires as Evie & Chase helped along with Josh. ROBERT LOUIS POTVIN

THE NEW, NEW YORK YANKEES

WEIGHT 167 LBS Today's New York Times sports page has a full story about the Yankees worth repeating. "Suddenly, the Yankees Resemble The Team They Were Expected To Be" On July 4 the Red Sox were in first place with a record of 53 & 32. The Yankees were 42 & 41.ten games behind! Yesterday the Yankees were in second place 5 games behind Tampa Bay. Since July 4th their record is 26 wins and 11 losses! It seems the Red Sox are in great trouble some five games behind Tampa Bay and tied with the Yankees who are also five games behind. The Yanks seem to have the momentum in winning which the Sox don't. This Thursday was full of foul weather from tornado warnings to floods. The forecast is not good with the possibility of more rain and winds by Sunday. This day was quiet. I had a meal at the NB Senior Center.. a Chile Baked Potato. UGH. Saw Josh briefly at 5:00 but the mist told me to retreat. Tonight the Yankees ae ahead 4-0..something to think about! ROBERT LOUIS POTVIN

A BUSY WEDNESDAY

The Hawaiian Luau at the NB Senior Center was a total success. Twenty-eight folks, many dressed up in festive outfits, made it interesting. Many photos were shot and can be seen on the Senior Center Web page. One observation made is Ray Hebert and I were the only men in attendance! Senator Anne Gobi's man took another application for my vanity plate request: My choices: POTVIN, NIVTOP AND BOBBYP. I PAID THE
$70 fee, again. My license plate necktie from Hawaii was a hit. After a leisurely roung-table discussion I decided to attend the graveside services of the Late Doug Kruzewski at the Brookfield Cemetery. Senator Steve Brewer was in attendance along with Atty Michael Meloche, Joe Spadea an others. Didn't recognize many of the attendees.I shook Mrs. Kruzewski's hand expressing my condolences. At home I discovered a leak from my kitchen sink. Josh-the-Plumber found the problem and tightened the fitting. As far as the Red Sox vs Yankees go......Not good! ROBERT LOUIS POTVIN

THE SLUMPING RED SOX

Blood glucose 108. Watching the failing Red Sox is upsetting. I went into the double header at Yankee Stadium optimistic only to see the folly of missed scoring opportunities. The Sox lost and are losing in the second game!Unless things change the New York Yankees will surpass the "Boys from Boston!" Brunch at NB was good despite the poor showing. Tomorrow is the Hawaiian Luau. I may even wear my License Plate necktie gifted from the kids. The hall was being decorated. They are hopeful of seeing 29 folks attend. The North Brookfield gas station is now having concrete foundation footing installed. It is encouraging. Had a small campfire with Josh. Nobody else was around.Sad to read of the passing of Dougie Kruzewski of Brookfield Motors. Doug was 79. Graveside ceremony tomorrow at the Brookfield Cemetery. ROBERT LOUIS POTVIN

MY NO-BASEBALL MONDAY

This Monday was cool but not cold. The morning was spent shopping for food. I forgot to get Fish Oil and pain pills so I will return tomorrow on my way to the NB Senior Center. 'Kathy's Brunch' is featured with Scrambled Eggs, Sausage , French Toast and Fruit. The SOX had a day off and tomorrow they will play a day-night doubleheader starting at one o'clock at Yankee Stadium. I hope the team is UP for a sweep! Speaking of Yankees the Hall of Fame Plaque featuring Joseph Paul Di Maggio recounts his many achievements including "Hitting two home runs in one inning in 1936, hitting three hone-runs in one game (3 times) and other achievemnets. I visited Josh at 4:45. He told me Lily was working at Howard's so I stopped on my way home for a cup of black raspberry ice cream. Lily was all smiles as I placed my order. I gave 'Lil another big tip. Jeopardy! is playing re-runs with Alex as host. ROBERT LOUIS POTVIN

A COOLER DAY

The air was cooler with lower humidity as I began this Sunday. After doing laundry in Warren I came back to the Poodle and made my bed.The Red Sox game came on at one and it was a pleasure to see the Sox sweep the Baltimore Orioles. Before that I enjoyed a Cheeseburger at Howards. Chase was working the grill and I obliged with a generous tip. After the game I drove over to Birch Hill. Josh asked me to drive him to Dollar General for some propane for his grill. Coming back he upset a bees nest and got stung! Then I drove to Howard's for my favorite.. black raspberry ice cream.Sister Lily was working and presented me with a cup. I gave Lily a generous tip.Son Ben had called earlier in the afternoon with a video call.Savvy and Fenway-the dog could be seen for the first time.My Sunday was fulfilling! ROBERT LOUIS POTVIN

THE RED HOT RED SOX

Weight 168 lbs. "Johnson" came at the appointed hour and we headed West to Northampton. It was a warm Saturday without any threat of thunder. From Northampton we headed south and ended up in South Hadley. Dick asked if we could eat in Ware at the McDonalds and I said Yes.This makes two weeks in a row we enjoyed a hamburger, fries and a drink for $7.90. I returned to my air-conditioned chalet where it's always comfortable. The Red Sox game came on at 4:00 so it was perfect. After a while I drove to Birch Hill and visited with Josh & Chase. Josh was on a "mission" of securing two Jet-Ski boats contrary to Chase's wishes.Josh changed his mind which made Chase happy. I returned to waatch the Hot Sox slam the Orioles 16-2. I hope this is a precursor to the games ahead! Go Sox! ROBERT LOUIS POTVIN

A POOL PARTY & COOK-OUT ON BIRCH HILL

It was another very hot day. I had lunch at the West Brookfield Senior Center. My supply of needles for my insulin pen came in just in time. I filled my cady of pills and was unable to order refills as the phone line wasn't working. I traveled to Birch Hill in the heat of the day. Josh had a small fire going as the family and friends enjoyed the pool.I have not been in the pool this year. Friends arrived with their kids.I mentioned the red VW Beetle for sale at the Post & Boot. It was enough for all to travel: $20,000 for 4 year old car. PASS. The Red Sox are leading 4-0 against Baltimore.. a good sign. ROBERT LOUIS POTVIN

A HOTTER THURSDAY

Blood glucose 115 Today was the hottest day of the Summer. My thermometer on the garage read 91 degrees. My AC and super fan kept my pad tolerable. I ate lunch in North Brookfield and went food shopping. I settled in for the Red Sox game at 4:00. The 20 run of last night didn't last long as the Sox lost today and remain 5 games behind Tampa Bay.I drove over to Josh's at 5:00 and enjoyed an abbreviated visit. "There's a thunderstorm in Amherst coming our way." I took this as my time to leave and I did. I wasn't home two minutes when a moderate storm and lightening hit West Brookfield. I am glad I did! Jeopardy! continues to be very interesting. The "Champ" is now third highest ever. Looks like tomorrow will, too, be another hot one. I eat at the West Brookfield Center tomorrow on Friday The Thirteenth! ROBERT LOUIS POTVIN

A VERY HOT WEDNESDAY IN AUGUST

The temperature eached 90 degrees this afternoon! My AC and high-speed fan kept things comfortable as I watched the Yankees defeat Kansas City. Earlier in the day I received and paid my Cable bill for $129.56. The "gift" came from National Grid saying "No Payment Due." Each Summer I receive such a statement. Earlier I ate lunch at the NB Senior Center. Four of us enjoyed the Raspberry Walnut Salad with chicken. I caught up with Josh at 5:00. He was frustrated by not having service on his Intenet. As he got it fixed his mood changed. We drove Maddie to Quaboag to soccer practice.
I enjoyed a Cheeseburger from Howards!. Tonight the Red Sox are off to a 7-0 start... a badly needed victory! ROBERT LOUIS POTVIN

A TUESDAY CAMPFIRE IN AUGUST

It was a gloomy day. I laid low researching thw American Antiquarian Society. It has been some years since the AAS was part of my routine. I made friends and enjoyed researching the Brookfields.. then bam.. Covid.I intend to contact my friend Elizabeth Pope and renew my membership. Had lunch at the Senior Center in NB.. beans and franks and salad. Nancy D. and Judy C joined me. The day opened up with the sound of a riding mower. Josh mowed the lawn and invited me to Birch Hill for a campfire. Despite the gloom it was fun. Evie and Maddie gave me some souvenirs from Hawaii! They were gone for 12 days between San Francisco and Waikiki and other places such as Oahu. I was presented with a "license plate" silk necktie, a plate bearing "ROBERT" for my Allante and an orange baseball featuring all of the Hawaiian attractions. I was touched by the thoughtfulness of the girls. I planned to having a cheeseburger at Howard's but the mist told me to get home! ROBERT LOUIS POTVIN

MY WALMART EXPRESS

Hannaford ran out of nutritional shakes necessisating me to drive to Ware Walmart. I was greeted by a lady who radioed for me to obtain an electric cart.A spiffy new cart and basket arrived and I was in command.I zipped all around the vast inventories.. got a case of 24 Equate shakes then traveled to review the big-screen televisions. They now sell for half of what I paid some three years ago.I felt in command in my cart! Then, after my shopping of 10 American flags I was ready to leave and requested help in loading the case of 24 to my Honda. "Service with a smile." On the way home Chase called me and met me at the Poodle. He installed two light bulbs over the sink and replaced the glass dome. I visited Josh & Chase at 5:00 pm. Josh showed me pictures of the family vacation.I then ate supper at Howard's having a Cheeseburger and a cup of black raspberry icecream served by Lily Potvin!I gave her a meaningful tip. This Monday despite the overcast and humidity was well above average!

THE DISASTER IN TORONTO

After last night's victory against the Toronto Blue Jays and the 15 hit barrage against the Blue Jays I was optimistic of a victory this afternoon. WRONG! The Sox lost 9-8 giving them a record of 8 defeats in the last 10 games. At what point do I start cheering for the Yankees? I enjoyed watching the PBA bowling later in the day. Some diversion is necessary to keep my wits! The day was hot. Looks like the week's weather will be hotter that hot! Saw Josh in the late afternoon as he was mowing his lawn. Spoke with Ben in Belmont.Did some grocery shopping at Hannaford's. My day was good! ROBERT LOUIS POTVIN

MY JOHNSON/RED SOX SATURDAY

Dick Johnson called to my attention the growth of weeds on the spillway at Doane Pond. It seems somebody is overlooking a precarious situation that can end in disaster! After inspecting the problem we headed for the Quabbin. it is a peaceful visit we go to many times in a year. The Quabbin is the pride of Massachusetts. We were going to eat at McDonalds in Belchertown but it is closed for remodeling so we ate in Ware. The usual hamburger, fries and drinks for both of us set me back $7.50. Then Johnson reminisced about his time with Air-America in Cambodia. Next, I came home to watch the Red Sox. They lost the first game 1-0 on a Joe Carter-type walk off home run. It is sad to see the Sox continue to skid. The second game is being played as I write. Laundry tomorrow in Warren. ROBERT LOUIS POTVIN

61ST CLASS REUNION NBHS CLASS 0F '60

It was a perfect Saturday in August to hold a reunion! George Banks and wife pulled up in a spiffy new Corvette as I parked my Allante' in the shade of the 308 Lakeside, East Brookfield. I was greeted by those who organized the event: Joan Mogul, Martha Fuller, Tim Parker and George Banks. The crowd was smaller than what I had hoped for.The organization was superb. We were given badges featuring our class year book photos. I sat next to Bobby Ford and Tim Parker. It is amazing how some folks have changed and others look the same! The booklet features updated bios..some highly sophisticated others just plain folks. I intend to send a summary bio as mine never made publishing! ROBERT LOUIS POTVIN

MY DISAPPOINTING RED SOX

BLOOD GLUCOSE 115 WEIGHT 163LBS..The Red Sox defeated Detroit last night after going in a tail spin. Today's game was played in the afternoon and the Tigers defeated the SOX 8-1. Not good. Now the Sox travel to Toronto for 4 games with the Blue Jays. It is anybodys guess what the 4 games will bring. Today's weather wasn't a delight. Although we didn't get much rain the over all day was gloom. The forecast for tomorrow is good. I report to my Class Reunion for Buffet.. Roast Beef and Baked Haddock beginning at Noon and lasting to 4. I'm excited as to WHO I will recognize.Class of 1960 here I come! ROBERT LOUIS POTVIN

THE ENCOURAGING SOX

With E-Rod having struck out the first four Tigers and J.T. Martinez hitting a home run it seems the Red Sox are back on track. I know it's early in the game and I'm encouraged. Had lunch in North Brookfield again with "Bill". The day was quiet. Getting geared up for my class reunion on Friday. Have no idea who will be there?! Seems it has been decades since our last reunion. I recall the tenth held at Salem Cross in 1970. Sunset was another beauty.. rain in the forecast. It will be interesting how Billy Joel's concert at Fenway turned out? North Brookfield Historical Museum will be opened Saturday at 11:00. Plan on taking Johnson to the Mac's TV basement location. NORTH BROOKFIELD GAS STATION/CONVENIENCE STORE PLANS REVIEWED

I visited the Assessor's Office today and reviewed the plans. Once complete this will transform the center of town to the 21st Century. There will be multiple gas pumps and a big convenience store.Probably 6 months to completion. Removal of ruins is almost complete. Ate at the NB Senior Center with my friend "Bill." We had a good discussion on a variety of subjects. I came home and and watched "Doctor's With X-Ray Vision" narrated by Bill Kurtis. I enjoy watching this video as it covers the evolution of X-Rays to MRI and PET Scans.Interesting. Next I watched a video about ABBA .. the Swedish singing group. The setting sun and skym tonight
was orange! Maybe a sign of rain? Guns & Roses are plating at Fenway tonight and Billy Joel tomorrow night. Bring your rain coat! As for the Red Sox/Detroit.. the Sox lead 2-1 in the second inning. ROBERT LOUIS POTVIN

A CHANGE IN THE WEATHER

Cloudiness has settled in and the mood has changed. I enjoyed the two evenings where the temperature dipped to 50 degrees at dawn. Now there doesn't seem to be any cool air masses in the near future. Darn! My windows are now closed and the air conditioner is on. I'm disheartened with the Red Sox! Tampa Bay has a pitcher with strike outs heading for a record. The best thing is to lick your wounds and get out of town! I did my laundry in North Brookfield this Sunday morning. The laundromat is on Summer Street. I enjoyed reminiscing on the buildings and stores of the 50s. The post office was where the hair salon was. I was a boy who enjoyed visiting George Murphy and Lenny Lemieux each night! There was a show repair shop where Fred Dintini of Southbridge came.I ecall buying my first pair of dress shows from Fred. Leo Ledoux had a dry cleaning facility and Jesse Quinn a barber shop in the same building. I.E. Irish Insurance also was in the building. Time waits for no man and it was fun looking back! NBHS cLASS OF 1960 Reunion friday at 308 Lakeside, EB Friday 12-4. I plan on attending. ROBERT LOUIS POTVIN

THE MAGIC TOUCH OF JEFF NICKERSON

Without access I am a "man without a blog!" I have been unable to log on since Thursday and am at my wits end. I asked Johnson to look at my dillemma. No soap. Steve Magnante came by for a nice visit: no luck. Frustration personified. More so, the Boston Red Sox seem to be faltering with three losses. Have they lost the magic touch? If so, the second half of the year will be a disaster. I like Bobby Dalbec. His home run last night gives hope. The next week will be a tough schedule for sure. The one thing that has been positive is the weather. We have had morning temperatures at 50 degrees. I opened the windows at night and enjoyed the cool mornings. A new month and the hope of cooler weather.I like it! ROBERT LOUIS POTVIN
