WHISTLER'S MOTHER AND I ARE WHISTLING DIXIE!

Talk about being in the right place at the right time...I hit paydirt in finding an oversized print of this famed and framed "A Portrait of My Mother." James McNeil Whistler's work is one of the finest portraits in the lexicon of paintings done in 1871. It now hangs in the Louvre in Paris!

His frail mom sat for the portrait as the study was sickly. Today, my "Mother" will be hung in my growing gallery!

Okay.. you Mothers..Smile!

BEN POTVIN 46 YEARS TODAY

Ben has turned age 46. My oldest "boy" continues to make something of his life. Ben is an Commercial Underwriter for THE HARTFORD in Charlotte. He's married to Allison and has one daughter, Savannah Hope Potvin.
Send Ben a card at 1167 Victoria Blake Lane, Belmont, NC  28012. He's the man!

THE POWERS OF MY THOUGHTS

THIMK!

How we use our bean determine how our lives will continually unfold!

'The soul becomes dyed with the colours of its thoughts.''

'A sick thought can devour the body's flesh more than a fever.'

"Where does a thought go when it's forgotten?"  Freud

Nothing in our lives is more powerful than one idea that can make all of us rich. "We become what we think about!"

As I lay in bed earlier my mind wandered.  As I tweaked my thought process I lapsed into a late night slumber with more dreams. This is good as I coerced my mind to "think positive."

Our brains are our engines. What do you sport? A 4 cylinder type.. a V- 6.. a Straight-Eight.. a V-12 or a super brain of Sixteen Cylinders?

At any age we can grow in size by "mental gymnastics." Blogging is one thing I employ daily... one in the morning and one at night. Others do crossword puzzles..some read the funnies. The Boob Tube is a tough call between fantasy and history and the truth of the matter.

Today everything can be available to us in all medias. Music lightens our hearts. Few speeches really inspire us. reading a good book just may be a thing of the past. Regardless our brains are BRAINY if we use them.

It's back to the dictionary for me. I love words.  Each day should be one of intellectual growth! So I ask 'What's in your brain?'  Tune it up! Go forward in style....

THE HEAT IS ON.. AND SO IS MY AC!

It seems to be a late May heatwave! Too hot.. too fast.. and yes.. too bad!

This "Tuesday-Monday" type saw some good. Clean dry-cleaning pits me in good stead with things. Also, an oil change and a trip to Staples - Sturbridge allowed me to collect my Rewards! Janet, Heather, and Roland really bend over backwards to help me. I like it!

I'm having troubles with my HP 8600 printer. Seems after 20,000 copies without a hitch... I ask "Is it getting tired?"

Another great meal at the NB Senior Center for lunch. small crowd.. good company, however. I opted for "ham salad on white" and a hermit cookie.

SonBen turns 46 tomorrow. Ben, wife Alli, and Savvy reside in Belmont, NC. I'm very proud of my family. Sent Savanna Hope potvin a little pink sign for her bedroom "HOPE>".. her middle name!

Letter went out to Dollar General seeking assistance in helping with the NB Town Hall! He, why not? Shrubs were being planted today at the North Brookfield location...next to NBHS.

"That's All Folks.!" OK Bugs Bunny!

MY LUCID MEMORIES OF 1968

Fifty years.. where did they go? Fifty years..I just don't know!" WOW.

My first 45 days in 1968 saw me in the final moments of being a soldier in Vietnam. Now, on February 14, I was "A Coming Home Soldier" as Bobby Vinton Sings. I had matured, did my Duty to my Country, my parents and myself. Now I was free.

I had witnessed the "War Machine" as an enterprise which all wars are. Having a sense of history I absorbed much. Coming home was a different story!

My weight had dropped to 150 lbs, I was deeply suntanned, and got on with things immediately. "Mother Aetna" welcomed me back.. gave me a caseload of casualty claims to settle as I settled down to civilian life. My swagger continued.

I did not have much baggage from the war other than my duffel bag. My new salary was at $7,700 and a black 1964 Chevy Nova company car was my wheel until a spiffy new blue Chevy Bel-Air came in for Memorial Day. I had the world by the tail!

As Spring came my way, Fenway Park saw me for some 20 contests. "Red" McCormick had contacts at Fenway.. Rico Picardi, the head hot dog salesman gave us preferred seats. Carl Yastrzemski, my favorite, was coming off of his Impossible Dream year, 1967.

Somebody at Aetna suggested I try Law School. I took the LSAT and did lousy. My application to the University of Maine was denied!

Being a Vietnam veteran wasn't a popular credential as I recall. "So what" was the cry of demonstrators and Draft Dodgers. Even the local VFW Post spurned my enthusiasms.

Vietnam boiled in Worcester with demonstrations.  I had a very passive attitude to it all.

My social calendar perked up with the young ladies. We had fun as all youth should. I remained living at home with Joe and Rita.. then I fell in love!

I had money saved and money earned and money to invest I gold and money to blow! The Derby Bar and Grill was my "watering hole" and I enjoyed the after hours drinking. Coach Arthur Pappas was my friend and obtained me tickets for the World Series in Saint Louis! My college friend, Joseph A. Bryk, PhD. welcomed me back to the Gateway City. I was home, again, in my home away from home."

All of America was ablaze in riots. The political campaign of 1968 was the antithesis  of LBJ's 1964 Landslide. 'Bobby' won then was killed.George Wallace was an asshole, HHH lost and "NIXON WAS THE WON." Never liked him.

1968.."Fifty Years...where's they go.. Fifty years I don't know!?"

POSTALE AMERICANA 2018

This idea has been spawned and is now growing in my bean! Framed sheets of U.S. Postage  AS MINIATURE WORKS OF ART... a smart idea, indeed.

It's a No Brainer when you come down to it! So I'm doing it

POSTALE AMERICANA - MY NEW ENTERPRISE

The thought comes to me.. IF stamp collecting is now an Old Man's Hobby.. I have an idea of merit!

Since 1954 I have been enthralled  in employing my hobbies of  Old Coins, Stamps, Clocks, Watches and Autographs into my livelihood as an entrepreneur/auctioneer/ antique dealer. Times have changed immensely since then with Forever postage and digital clocks. Flee-Market Flip has transformed and bastardardized all traditions of American Heritage.. or so it seems.

So, what to do? Make lemonade out of lemons!

Years ago, U.S. Postage cost 3 cents to mail a letter. More importantly was the inherent beauty of all postage. The engraving process features U.S. History, Geography, Biography and much more in sheets of postage. Definitive postage carries 100 stamps per sheet bearing Serial Numbers..

Plate Blocks.. if you may.

Now, there's a glut in the marketplace...Too many stamps.. not enough buyers! Cancelled, Pre-Cancelled or Mint condition. EACH TOPIC AND SERIES OF ISSUES TELL A STORY!

The availability of most stamps is amazing. Dealers are selling these babies for deep-discounts to be used for postage.. recently at a coin show I observed "postage" offered at 70% of face!

To me, this is a great opportunity to offer a unique collectible to all who want to propagate our past in postage. Nothing will be finer than U.S. Postage.. framed and possibly matted? Kids bedrooms can be a wonderful application of my idea! Family rooms and offices can tell YOUR STORY. All you'll have to do is select your preferences ( or your kids.) From GW to Bugs Bunny.. and tell your story!

I will be following up this idea with traveling to Lincoln Stamp and Coin in Worcester, then to the Cardinal Spellman Philatelic Museum in Weston, MA. Wish me luck!

"I'm Stuck on You!" LOL
