VERY GOOD!

FINALLY WE CAN SAY GOODBYE TO JANUARY

Confined, trapped, entombed, and a whole more superlatives describe this cold, cold day. My home is as organized as it can be. Spiffy clean. There's only one problem.. I can not find my souvenir of CAPE COD NATIONAL SEASHORE! It is a logo of CCNS and it has disappeared! Put it with my lower denture.

Got a call from the DVA in Boston. I am trying to claim more than the paltry 20% rating I have received for Agent Orange presumptive benefits.

Tomorrow will be a new month..the month of the Groundhog. March 1st is but 4 weeks away. How lucky can we be. LOL. I hate winter.

TRUMP'S SPEECH

His squinting eyes reveal didn't necessarily reveal the President as a great orator. What I did like is the involvement of those Americans who battled adversity and prevailed. His recognition of those folks was heartfelt.

Trump's Cabinet is essentially wealthy individuals and Brass. enough said.

The end of his speech was the best. I know about the Statue of Freedom, like it and feature it here and now! USA  USA  USA!

LYNDON BAINES JOHNSON'S VISIT TO WORCESTER 1964

The clouds of the Vietnam War hadn'ts settled over the White House in the summer of 1964. LBJ was riding high no matter where he went. First, to Saint Louis then onto many places including Worcester, Mass and The College of the Holy Cross.  to deliver a Commencement Address.

The information received today from the LBJ Library includes notes of that June 6, 1964 presidential visit. What amazes me are the numbers of Johnson's entourage! Of local interest is one John C. McNally of Webster. Readers will recognize names such s Gov. Endicott Peabody, Mayor Paul V. Mullaney, City Manager Francis McGrath, DA William Buckley, Edward C. Maher, Cosmos Mingola, Joseph McGuire, John C. Manoog, Gustav Coontz, Daniel Foley, Joseph C. Casdin, George Wells and others including Harold D. Donahue, Raymond P. Harold, Ray W. Heffernan and more.

Two of my friends, Paulette Adams and Joe Tortorelli recall seeing Mr. Johnson on that June day.

A motorcade traveled down Airport Drive to Pleasant Street, Worcester. Johnson stopped and shook hands of well-wishers according to the Daily Diary Worksheet.

It was All The Way With LBJ!

PIMSLEUR FRENCH COURSE

There's nothing more rewarding on a cold January Tuesday that brushing up on your French! Although it has been 60 years since Stanley H. Kuniholm introduced me to the French language and followed by G. Richard Rene' at Worcester Junior College, and Mr. O'Neil at Saint Louis University, the French language is in my blood!

My parents spoke broken Canadian French at home when they wanted to keep secrets from my sister Jan and I. A few years ago Rudy Heller of Brookfield recommended I subscribe to the PIMSLEUR  APPROACH. Today, I dug out 7CDs for a review of conversational French. It is really good.

PIMSLEUR advertises "Quick & Simple French"..NO BOOKS! NO CLASSES! TOTALLY AUDIO. Why not visit PIMSLEUR APPROACH.COM / CUSTOMER? or call 1-866-204-7139.

French is called a Romance Language and that it is.

GRAMMYS 2018

My Sunday evening was spent in the confines of my porch. Somehow I latched onto the Grammy Awards, live from New York. I had a front row seat on my 75" BRAVIA by Sony. The evening proved to be better than the World Series, Super Bowl and all other contests combined.

Old Tony Bennett kicked things off. I note he now sports a moustache! The dancing and performing was truly brilliant. The youth of the stage revealed a whole new array of talents and tattoos! Rap music doesn't do anything to yours truly  but it sure moves the souls of "brothers and sisters."

One of my favorites is Lady GaGa. She didn't win the post nominated for. Beyonce' did. But the singer who stold the show was young BRUNO MARS! His hits of "GRENADE" and "JUST THE WAY YOU ARE" are known by me. BM won Album of the Year with 24K, Record of the Year and Song of the Year "THAT'S WHAT I LIKE."

The Grammy Awards were truly the best and I appreciated watching them from the confines of  my home! Thank you, "Gram

SETON HALL WINS OVER DEPAUL

After losing 2, The Hall came back with a win in Chicago! The team seems to be too good to be bad.

I drove to Springfield to find my buddy suffering from a bout with the gout. All bets were off to go to Windsor so I traveled to the New England Air Museum, again, and visited with my 92 year old pilot friend, Gould McIntyre. It is always a thrill to chat with Mr. McIntyre.

I quizzed Gould about air planes and he responded "anything Pratt Whitney is good. I moseyed around the museum of aircraft in awe. These silver sentinels are so imposing.. so big.. bigger than life.

SAY HI TO MY HYACINTHS

My three TotalGreen Holland hyacinths bring me a new idea on life. I bought these bulbs at Hannaford a month ago or more with the hopes of enjoying their redolence in due time. If anything I'm learning more about botany than I ever expected!

My white hyacinth sprouted its first flower an hour ago. The entire glass kit and box cost me $5.99 The string roots may number in the hundreds and the best is yet to come.

When you see life in a bulb you see the message of life. Amazing. A close sniff reveals nature's perfume. I can just imagine when a "full bloom" will smell like in a week or so. The other tow bulbs are "late bloomers."

How lucky we are to have Mother Nature instructing us on this cold January night!

WHAT AN APPRAISER DOES

In establishing value in anything, an appraiser certainly must know the product. An appraiser should research what's at hand.Condition and rarity allows an appraiser to assign  A RANGE OF VALUE. The reality is a conservative approach is needed. A "puffed-up" appraisal can be dangerous.

I once handles an estate for auction from Missouri. My clients were given a bill of goods that came in way above the real value. As in all appraisals.. it is an "indication of value."

In real estate, comparable values of similar homes are given. In antiques Price Guides are  recommended. The guides are good as are books such as The New Fine Points of Furniture -Early American by ALBERT SACK. This one book is definitive in appraising as it steers you into the correct pew and the right church.

I think it is judicious to bring in advisors in every appraisal if needed. Nobody knows everything! A picture is worth a thousand words and maybe TEN THOUSAND DOLLARS.

In a down market in everything, do not go wild with excessive values as the BOOMERANG can come back to haunt you. Inquire, visit car dealers or antique shops or coin shops or clock dealers getting a sense of current values.

My reference library is formidable in this regard.

Good luck. Be timely and try to obtain a good provenance on just about anything being appraised.

Very Truly Yours

APPRAISER-AUCTIONEER - BOB POTVIN AU-2000

An auctioneer - appraiser must be versed in many, many areas. Traditionally, knowledge of inanimate objects was reasonably easy. Today it can be a different ballgame.

Advancing technologies coupled with MADE IN CHINA goods have flooded the markets. This means all of the junque in an estate may be worth less and in many cases worthless! BEWARE!

I began trading at a very young age. As soon as I had a full time job with Aetna I began speculating. It was in my blood then and it is in my blood NOW at age 75+. I have won and I have lost.Winning is much more fun. LOL

Anybody 60 or above should have an exit plan.KNOW WHAT YOU HAVE! A written appraisal can guide your children and family for future applications. It will give you a discipline and knowledge of reasonable values. My fee is $300 for a typed appraisal.

LBJ REDUX

Lyndon B. Johnson was bigger than life following the JFK Assassination! Johnson had qualities Trump will never have. He was a teacher in Cotilla, Texas before heading for Washington. He was a Democrat and LBJ loved power.

I met LBJ twice.. first in St. Louis then in Texas. I think I liked Old Lyndon more than JFK! Yep. I was an "Obedient Soldier." In the framework of a Democracy, our Commander-in-Chief must be allied with Cabinet Members and the Top Brass.. the Generals.

As Dick Cheney, VP, said to me "The World Is A Bad Place Out There".. and that it is. At this stage of the game I don't think there's much more to learn looking back. The Military-Industrial Complex is subtle to the day to day of all Americans but the reality is "PARADISE IS FOUND IN THE SHADOW OF THE SWORDS!"

Count your sheep! LOL

NEW BRAINTREE SOLAR

I have a very dear friend named Deny Long. Mr. Long is your quintessential farmer, talented in many disciplines. He was an egg farmer, a dairy farmer, and now is a goat milk farmer. Denis works hard, even his advancing years (two older than me!)

Summit Farm, is perhaps, the best spot in New Braintree for a solar farm. Mr. Long has been researching the proposed project for years. I submit Mr. Long be given the green light in his solar proposal!

THE MASSIVE PACIFIC OCEAN

Any war machine at any time pits the good guys versus the bad. Last night I devoured another documentary "War in the Pacific." Having flown over the pacific, to and fro, I have a certain  sensitivity to both to the ocean and war. Battle ships are monstrous. I never desired to be on any kind of ship.

Because I have a definite affection for all Australians and that I've been there Down Under three times last night's movie was very meaningful. In particular was the feature of the Japanese invasion in Darwin. I now know much more about story that goes with Darwin. I refueled in Darwin one October day, 1967!

The footage of WWII are very revealing. The Runtime is over 10 hours. Places like the Marshall Islands, The Philippines, the Solomon Isdlands, New Guinea, Guadalcanal, China, India, Burma, Okinawa  and others. This film features "combat camera men."

Heroism  and bravery are revealed as is the genius and architects of war, itself. Think of it.. THE ENTIRE WORLD WAS AT WAR!I was just a baby boy in cloth diapers yet WWII came into my crib. Dad fashioned pine airplanes as mobiles above my waking body.

Everything about war meant prosperity. Tanks, gun, ammunitions and planes were boilerplate. Dad made shoes for Russian soldiers! Uncles Albert, Fred, John, Franny and others were away. V-Mail Services brought reduced-in-size letters from the from soldiers and sailors from around the world.

War means progress, I guess,  from the beginning of time. and learning about WWII enhances my understanding of world history. I submit my readership join in.. Live, learn, laugh cry.

HOW TO BEAT THE TRAFFIC IN BOSTON

Too many motorists lack the self-confidence  in driving in Boston. Their fears may be justified as traveling to Beantown and in Boston requires two hands on the wheel and two eyes in the back of your head not to mention attendant back-seat drivers.

  • Options include taking the train inform Riverside.
    • Taking the Commuter Rails from suburbs west, north or south.
    • Driving in at your own risk. Smart motorists drive in "off hours" i.e. ahead of commuters or after commuters. Knowing your destination will help you immensely.
    • Weekend travel should be a piece of cake. Weekdays can prove to be a nightmare.
    • Bad weather can double your time necessary.
    • The Brookfields are about 70 miles from Government Center
    • Valet Parking at the Parker House is $50. It is easy considering the cost.
    • Traveling to Boston is not a piece of cake, however, The Hub of the Universe affords wonders not found elsewhere.
    • Need a life? Give me a call. Like Charlie Bush, cab driver once said 'I know the way.' So do I.

      Paul & Sarah Potvin 1903

BACK IN BUSINESS, TODAY, WEDNESDAY!

Sometimes it's good to get away from it all for several days. Such was the case with yours truly. First, I had a "hostile-takeover" from some clown across the Pacific. This activity prompted me to pull the plug and head for Staples/Sturbridge! Mt computer sage, Roland "changed my oil and greased the windmills of my mind. Now I'm whole again and raring to blog.

Sunday saw me head west to John B. O'Sullivan's home in Springfield. We had planned on going to Windsor, CT, to the Antique Radio Museum. But John had a more pressing issue: A Monday hearing in Boston at the Federal Building with the Veterans Administration scheduled at 10:00 AM. As I am a Uber driver in my own rite, things came into focus.

As we mulled over options from taking the Commuter Rail in from Worcester to South Station a solution surfaced. I suggested driving into Downtown Boston on Sunday, getting a room or two in the general neighborhood and taking in the scenes and dining at the Oyster House. "Johnny" said 'Book it' and that I did.

I remembered the Parker House Hotel from days gone by. Further, I have the aplomb to maneuver anywhere in Boston be it behind the wheel or taking the "T"... 'All systems say go.' e took John's red Toyota RAV-4 and left my Honda in Springfield. Yes, I left my sun-roof open and unlocked inviting thieved.

We checked in around 4:45 PM and walked to the restaurant, the oldest in America. c. 1828. Everyone was mesmerized with the Patriot's football game. I say "it is the new religion" in New England and the world. We enjoyed a cup of New England Clam chowder with Westminister-type Crackers. and LAZY MAN'S LOBSTER and a Coke.

After dining we had the Parker House to ourselves. Back to the room we retired early to our own adjoin

ing quarters.

FRENCH-CANADIAN AMERICAN

I'm French-Canadian American and proud of it. My family roots go deep into the sod of life. Today I received a Priority Mail from my college roommate in Portland, Oregon. It cost $13.00 to mail.

Inside of the Red White and Blue box was a collection of what I sent Bill over the years. "THE ONLY THINGS WE KEEP IN LIFE ARE THE THINGS WE GIVE AWAY." Important to it all is one particular book:
"The French Canadian Heritage in New England" by Gerard Breault written in 1986. If you are French Canadian get it at your library.

As we all search for a meaning in life, this one book did the trick for me. I went from being a "Dumb Frenchman" to that of being an educated geographer with meaning. As an auctioneer/antique dealer I am learning all of the nuances of life in the 21st Century. Blogging certainly helps me to discover life's deepest meanings and rewards.

Over 100 years ago 'La Franco-Americane' in 1900 was made up of devout Catholics with huge families. My Poulin roots  state 'Joseph Poulin was big, tall, raw-boned man; wood chopper. Was killed by a fallen tree. He would pick up his son in one hand, and say "I'm STILL THE BOSS, JOSEPH!"
Joseph Poulin lived and trapped with Indians around Lake Superior until he was 14. Pepere' was a railroad night watchman.. was a pipe smoker and died of tongue cancer." Marie Tetreault hailed from Putnam, CY and died at age 34. They had 8 children!

My maternal great parents hailed from St. Jude, Canada. Delphine Hamel founded LEDOUX VARIETY, N.BROOKFIELD ABOUT 1909. IDA WAS BORN IN 1892.
"SKIP" WAS BORN IN 1900. The small variety store is truly ingrained in my entrepreneurial spirit.

What I appreciate the most of Dr. Breault's sentiments is "IT WON'T DO TO PRESENT  A ROMANTICIZED HISTORY OF GRANCO-AMERICAN EXPLOITS. WHAT WE NEED IS THE TRUTH....AND THE TRUTH IS THAT WE ARE A SMALL UNAPPRECIATED PEOPLE. ENDOWED WITH TREMENDOUS ENERGY; WE ARE ONLY HUMAN BEINGS LIKE EVERYONE ELSE...BUT WE ARE NOT LESS THAN THAT."

Today my sons, Ben and Josh are educated in the ways of the world. Nothing finer than a Seton Hall education. I cherish my 5 grandchildren.. 4 girls and a boy. The Potvins will live in a world so different than that of their Great Great Great Grandpaents. who were woodchoppers and pipe smokers and "big baby makers."

Merci beaucoup mon Freres

CHASE'S FIRE-FARTS

Old Mike Coughlin ( Muriel's husband) once told me about his days in the U.S. Navy and his observations of Swabies  holding a lit match to a sailor's touchhole! A blue fire ensured! Honest.

Tonight on the way back from the Quaboag boys basketball game Son-Josh became flatulent. I told the story about Mike's observation and n "Yes." The next thing I knew was his presentation of the "Rhino Blue".. fire from the rear-end. I could not hold back the tears of happiness and approval. 'Kids Love Farts." Maybe George Carlin humor?

I watch two games and the experience evoked memories of the Fifties in North Brookfield. From Frank Waytina, the man who ran the new electronic clock in 1956, to ball players such as Gerry Smith, George Monahan, Ronnie Stackow and others under the coaching of Stanley Porter, Mr. Leach and Larry Boyd.

Basketball is our "winter salvation." Playing, observing, blogging, what have you, one James Naismith gave us at Springfield College a new game with two peach baskets and something to cheer about: BASKETBALL! I had a front row seat with N.B.H.S. as scorekeeper. Tonight my son, Josh, kept score.

If life is what we make it, certainly WINTER IS WHAT WE MAKE IT! Tomorrow morning I will return to courtside and witness an up & comer, Chase Robert!

If we are to endure our winters, certainly basketball and football will carry us through to Spring.

WINSLOW HOMER

Now at the Worcester Art Museum but not Fog Warning! The good Sisters of Saint Joseph gave me a print while in grade school! That was in 1953.

Better than reviewing the master works of Homer or contemplating Homer's bust, I found an 85 year old "antique" type  who was an antique dealer in glass... eons ago. I thoroughly enjoyed talking with Mr. Charles Coulter, a former biology teacher  now living in Laconia, along with his chic daughter and her stylish reading glasses, over a bottle of Nantucket Nectar.

The reality is a new generation of humans are evolving in a "who cares" mentality. I say this because of my own son's words, J.Byron, who is an insurance executive. The flames of antiquity may be a subtle flicker today. Too much has changed globally as I see it. Old stuff is OLD. Newspapers are "Titanic-like" in their quest for survival and all fine art markets seem to be heading "Down, Down, Down" in the opinion of Mr. Octogenarian are an omen.

If museums are to survive my view is something RADICAL AND DRAMATIC must happen. "Saint Patriot" has taken over the mindset of ALL.. not just kids or whatever.  I speak with authority after having bombed in an electronic auction less than a month ago. Times have changed, folks.

Nobody has enjoyed antiquity more than me. Coins and stamps and clocks and watches and autographs  have given me more than money. I delight in having a good sense of history. "So what!"

As far as museums go, I think one of the best was seen and enjoyed by me in Hong Kong in 1998! If anything, a museum today will be remiss if they do not address our fabulous Space Era. There's enough meat on the bone to feed the masses and children of the SmartPhone Era. Enough said!

BOB POTVIN ON OBESITY

My commanding officer in Vietnam in 1967, Doctor Thomas Hudson Moss, Jr. was disgusted with "fat old ladies." I can't imagine how he would feel about things today? Junk food prevail. "WE ARE WHAT WE EAT AND DRINK!" I just look at the shelves at Hannaford Brothers. Amazing. Then I look at the carriages in amazement

Blame and alibis prevail in some cases. Complications in cardiovascular diseases, type 2 diabetes, obstructive sleep apnea, certain types of cancer, osteoarthritis, depression can be caused by excessive food, lack of exercise, etc. The bottom line to this will be reduced life expectancy! Wikipedia spells this epidemic of obesity all out.

While I am far from being perfect I monitor my "human condition" daily.zI am not a "food fanatic: I am hp. I try to read all labels looking at "sugars." Yes, I cheat once in a while. Who doesn't. I live an active life.. dout and about every day. I try to eat breakfast be it a donut or All-In-One Cereal. Buttered popcorn has been my latest craze. I love Non Fat milk. LL IN ll my numbers ae respectable.

I say 'Eat, drink, smoke and be merry and the Grim Reaper may have your address before mine! Dad always said, "Bob, everything in moderation." Well, I am nor a "moderate" I am a limousine liberal." Somebody must take care of the Poor.'Trump sure and hell won't!

What are your weight-loss goals for 2018? I dare you to reduce your "fat." The connotation of "being fat" is far reaching. I have a few fat friends, you know. Then there are other$ who are fat.!
