JUST WHO WAS LUCY STONE?

The name Lucy is renown in Lucile Ball or Lucy in the sky with diamonds. The year 1818 rings my bell with the founding of Saint Louis University. In 2018 the 200th anniversary of both Saint Louis and the Lady from Coy Hill will come to the fore.

Lucy Stone is reasonably obscure in the framework of modern life. Personally, spending a Sunday afternoon at the A.C. Stevens farmhouse atop Coy Hill in 1948 tells me I was living history. Suffragette Lucy B. Stone once lived in this hilltop residence! Although this was her birthplace, Lucy Stone was a true pioneer in the feminist movement.

Lucy married but never took on her married name. She founded a newspaper, was an accomplished Public Speaker and went onto fame. Lucy Stone and one Susan B. Anthony garnered much fame in their quest for equal rights.

The amazing part of the Stone legacy are the stones of the barn's foundation. The historic Stone birthplace was leveled by a great fire in 1950. Just a boy, I heard the wailing of the West Brookfield fire siren. No water could be pumped up Coy Hill and just ashes remain. It will be a good place to have a picnic lunch next summer.. to reflect of a nig name in American history: Lucy Stone!
