SNOWBALLS AT FENWAY

JANUARY 19, 1900  North Brookfield Mass.

Boston Beaneater, Martin Bergen killed his wife and two kids with a straight razor then took his own life. Newspaper headlines across the USA and beyond covered this story. Few folks living in The Brookfields know about this incredible event today!

The site of the murders was on Boynton Road on the way to the North Brookfield Sportsman Club facilities. The Bergen Homestead carried the name of  "Snowball Farm. " East Brookfield's Connie Mack attended the funeral march; Horse-drawn wagons carried the bodies.

Martin Bergen was born in 1875.As a catcher Bergen earned the reputation "of throwing out base runners.' As a catcher, Martin Bergen was the best the world ever produced.". Jesse Burkett. "No man acted with more natural grace as a ball player."

On Connie Mack Day, July 10, 1934, "The man who owned Broadway, George M. Cohan and Cornelius McGillicuddy placed a brownstone  memorial in St. Joseph Cemetery. Inscribed "In Memory of Martin Bergen 1871 - 1900." Nobody knows where Bergen was buried. Gene Caille speculated 'Bergen's body was thrown over the wall in the cemetery!"
