It is quite evident the traditional values of being an antique connoisseur is down the drain! I make this comment after observing the marketplace and seeing the abundant Yard Sales all over New England. If antiquity was a rising stock in the market.. guess what? An obvious nose-dive is occurring.
There was a time when I purloined furniture from the North Brookfield dump, refinished it and sold it for a profit. But that was then. Today our value system is upside down. Just look everywhere from brilliant red-dyed hair to holes in your dungarees.
As I am an independent SOB I accept things the way they are. It is called self-expression. Sure, my wardrobe reflects BOB Potvin and that's good. The omen is to those who have enjoyed hoarding stuff for 50 years, the reality is NO BODY WANTS IT ANYMORE! Drive around the BROOKFIELDS and you'll see more "FREE" SIGNS! Admitted, I take stuff that is free because I know " A SOUND MAN IS GOOD AT SALVAGE..at seeing nothing is lost."
Further, some folks in my age bracket say "I"ll leave my kids with a mess." The only thing that comes to mind is a DUMPSTER! Our throw-away-society has taught me a very good lesson: don't hoard stuff!
The Seventies and Eighties were great for me. I founded BLAIR HOUSE ANTIQUES in 1978 and rode the wave high into the 90s. Then baseball cards hit the skids. "CHOAK" came in from China and the containers on the high seas are flooding our markets big time. Just look at the Brookfield DOLLAR GENERAL. Disgraceful.
My new life is one of sophisticated simplicity. Who needs it? Pas moi. Even yesterday I was in a home in the Brookfields and observed "organized clutter!" It is everywhere... and folks are tripping over everything. not good.
There is no real solution. I write this blog only to create an awareness of what is at hand. BEEN THERE>>DONE THAT SO MANY TIMES. That's how I made my living as an Estate Auctioneer! No more.
As I see it, conditions will only get worse. FLEE MARKET FLOP reveals my convictions.
If sentiment is priceless it may be time to re-assess your vast holdings.
