Spencer's Eric Holmes was a dedicated U.S. Marine stationed as a security guard at the West Wing of the White House. Clinton was president and the year may have been 1993? I was a writer for the Spencer New Leader at the time.
The opportunity came for me and my sons to get a tour of the Oval Office of the White House one Sunday morning in July. We had tickets for the All-Star Game at Camden Yards!
We cleared security and had the place to ourselves. Neat.We also toured floor one of the Old Executive Office building and saw where 'Presidential Letters' were opened. Thousands of letters arrive each day.
I recall distinctly of walking down the hall and looking in the Office of the President!
There it was the Presidential Seal woven in a rug
What impressed me most was Eric's story about having "White House squirrels gnawing at his spit shined low quarters! "we may have fed the critters too?"! Now Eric Holmes is a Lieutenant/U.S. Marine. I met his proud mom today at the Big Y in Spencer. How nice. 'Hi Eric !'
