It all began with old Tom Edison. The first "noisemaker" in our homes was the crank phonograph. Before that the only noise hard was the barking dog, crying cat or baby need in a breast feeding. With the 20th Century came the roar of inventions. Planes, cars, locomotives ( earlier) then tube radios. The electronics that surround us today were non existent.
With wars came progress. FDR loved his chatting by the firesides. This is all America knew. Of course Hitler too discovered the value of his yelling and screaming over the airwaves. Today, even earplugs don't ameliorate our quest for peace and quiet.
Tonight I have been experimenting. The only noise is my little fan. No TV, no radio, no nothing and I love it. I am surrounded by sounds. Slacker Radio,
AM FM Compact Disc. You name it and I've got it. Not having sounds is like fasting. It is truly amazing. But peace and quiet gives you freedom.
The speeding Cruisers on Route 9 have new meaning and those beautiful blue lights. If only Edison were around to see what he gave us... Not to mention Tesla and Marconi.
Who cares of all those distractions in our lives. Let others toil for wealth. Me?Contentment!
