THE FADING MEMORY OF NORTH BROOKFIELD'S THEODORE C. BATES

In the 1880's North Brookfield had a true Good Citizen!!

Theodore Cornellius Bates was born on Bates Street in about 1843. Today, all Bate's stands for is essentially forgotten! Who remembers the museum in the North Brookfield library? The myriad of animals, birds and fish were preserved by the hands of taxidermists. For years boys and girls were inspired by these evanescent displays.

Then the slate roof to the building leaked and the fowl went a foul. SAD.

The Train Station on School Street foretold of transportation across the USA from NB. Townsfolks were emancipated by the rails of the Iron Horse. The band played on in the terminal halls in their 1875 celebration. Today, the brick edifice lies abandoned by good intentions from the past!

Bell Hill's observatory is like a rotten tooth. It is ignored  by all. A terrible testimony to both Bates and the Town. The former fire chief is quoted as saying " Bell Hill is not about history.. it's about water.!" My efforts in restoring this fantastic spot fell prey to COMMUNITY APATHY! "I'm out!' West Brookfield.. here I came!"

If our heritage is not embraced and taught...we will be like ROME!

Think about it!
