Let the buyer of autographs beware! The autopen has taken over the signature field in some cases! "In-person" autographs are the ones to look for. FAKE signatures have lured in the millions who want a touch with fame and fortune. George H.W. Bush's signature will come to the fore now that he has passed on and we know he signed thousands of time over his years.
As an autograph hound I delight in studying and mining the historic signatures. Allow me to explain.
In my lifetime I have owned an authentic Benjamin Franklin signature. I still pursue presidential signatures and have sold autograph collections from time to time. The thrill of my life came in 1994 in obtaining William Jefferson Clinton's live in-person signature.
Today I envision a plethora of George Bush's signatures coming to the marketplace. But you must remember President Bush signed autographs for decades! He is even quoted as saying: "ONE PER CUSTOMER."
Krause Publications of Iola, WI published a marvelous 600 page Reference and Value Guide assist all collectors in establishing values of their favorite autographs.. Categories and values run the gamut:
- Military Soldiers
- Athletes
- Movie Stars
- Artists
- Social and Religious leaders
- Scientists
- Astronauts
- Authors
to name a few. History buffs can hop scotch from presidents to also-rans. The key to collecting authentic autographs is letter content. The richer you are the rarer your finds may come your way. " Collectors are people who tend to be engaged not only with current events but who are knowledgeable about the history of the country."
Today, many athletes and others will sign only for $$$$$$$$$.
I'm pretty stubborn in being forced in paying when in fact many others will sign for free.
I say "know what you are buying, regardless."
Receiving the mails bearing authentic signatures is a thrill in itself.
