THE GILDED AGE IN AMERICA

The grandiloquent ways of some of the rich in the Victorian era can best be shown in the construction of their homes. In the Brookfields such mansions as the Pillsbury Funeral Home edifice on Gilbert St, N. Brookfield is one. Grandiose in every detail this home is truly a winner in architectural design.

Throughout the Brookfields Victorian mansions beckon the imaginations of the 'not-so-rich.'. Back then these monstrosities heated with coal for the most part. Furnishings were grandiose. As an estate auctioneer I have many experiences in dealing with furniture of the period. Black walnut and cherry and maple come to mind in the attendant designs.

Recalling no cars were yet invented, carriage sheds housed the horses. Further there wasn't any electricity so all devices employed kerosene. Big, big, big houses of the era had decorative arts so grandiose in design. Mark Twain's Hartford home is at the epitome of extravagance as are others across the land.

Last night's television program on the Gilded Age was terrific. I like Andrew Carnegie's story most of all. Morgan seemed to be an SOB.  Who comes to mind today of politics? LOL.

Give pause to an era in American history showing the birth of our great Nation and look at today...technologies personified...boy, have we come a long way since the Gilded  Era!
