Coin collecting has been one major love affair since boy scouts! The CC merit badge was the only one I obtained from two coin collectors Johnny Lyons and Jimmy Murphy in 1955!
I guess it was dad who inspired me with his fable on the 1856 Flying Eagle cent. Then, fortune came his way in odd happenings like finding two 1862 Copper Nickle cents under a granite step at Jim Coffee's across from Sat. Joseph Church!
As a fledgling dealer of sorts I bought and sold a trove of large U.S. Currency and coins from one George Buss. My profit paid for one semester' tuition at Worcester Junior College in 1961.
As I grew older my passion in numismatics grew. Forty years ago dealing in old U.S. coinage paid me dividends worth crowing about. The boom of the Hunt Brother's silver quest catapulted me big time. This purge saw many, many folks sell their treasures at amazing prices. Tubby Nelson was paid over $6,000 for his junk silver!
THE RED BOOK is the bible for all coin collectors. It hosts a myriad of production information and shows coins values.. conditions and rarities. There really isn't any limit to values.. it all depends on the mintage numbers and rarities. Today I bought the 72nd Edition of "A Guide of United States Coins" by R.S. Yeoman. 72nd Edition.
As we go further into a cashless society the availability of materials may play on relative values. Like anything in the Fine Arts world..rare stuff brings BIG BUCKS. I have always enjoyed helping folks divest themselves of be it one coin or 1,000. The news always piques our imaginations when hoards are found.
The one big rule on holding an old coin is never clean it! The trained eye can tell if it has been cleaned and the value is diminished. Proof Sets are a great collectible. The first Proof Set was sold in 1936 for $1.89. Today's value is given at $6,500!!! I once handled such a set in a rare coin auction for Robert H. Glass in an auction in Norwich, CT.
All rare coins can be found money. You never know where one coin or a collection or an accumulation will show up! I solicit all U.S. old coins for resale. I will appraise your old coins for free along with my recommendations. You can send them insured to me at Box 11, West Brookfield, MA 01585.
