Knowledge is power and if you want to grow in the worlds of knowing about antiques you must keep throwing yourselves into learning about antiques. This is what keeps me young at 73. My accountant and antique advisor told me this back in 1978. We attended shows all over Southern New England each Saturday and I haven't stopped learning ever since. Antiques are a disease of the soul...but a good disease. In preparing for this blog I went into the marketplace STRUBRIDGE. We live in the antiques belt so we should embrace things.
The amazing internet and Wikipedia belong to us. As dealers and auctioneers we must remain on our toes...most dealers do or their toast is TOAST. Dealing in antiques can be lots of fun. You learn then you earn. Trading isn't for sissies.
The listing found in Wikipedia is endless: Architectural. .Art.. Books, magazines.. paper Ephemera. .stuff not intended to be saved.. Clothing, fabric, textiles. Coins, currency, stamps. Film and television.. Glass and pottery (indeed a big topic.)Household. .Kitchen collectibles ..Memorabilia.. Event memorabilia Music including records, CD's Cassette tapes.. Instruments.
Technology, Here's the one I like. To include "Johnson" favorite.. slot machines! Our lives are cumulative and the stuff we can collect and deal in is endless. Obsolescence can be dangerous. We pitch things to the trash only to see things in Tag Sales. Humanity craves nostalgia... from one generation to the next. The problem today is there are fewer and fewer connoisseurs..at least that's my humble opinion. Today life is cumulative. Many of us have owned 5 SmartPhones. Do we shed the old? Not necessarily.
If I were you I would develop a new discipline in learning about antiques. Books.. museums .articles. friends. .trading buying.. selling..learn, learn.. learn. And one cardinal rule I learned in the "trading game" was never buy an antique with apologies. Also, always consider resale. If you paid too much for an item. take a hit in your wallet and get on with it a little smarter.
The pleasure is all mine with the new blog readers I met in Sturbride at The Host. Build your library with books from The Book Bear here in West Brookfield and get ready for Brimfield!
