THE GREAT HURRICANE OF '38

Not too many folks are alive today  to recall the Hurricane of '38! As a boy I heard dad expound on how things were: BAD. Bew people realize that it rained for a week prior to hurricane force winds coming up the Connecticut valley on September 21, 1938. Then tree removal took two years with stumps and debris left on the town common.


The big news was Doc O'Boyle's nurse Linda Woodis being swept away down the waters of Doane Pond. Today there's a plaque on the brick spillway gatehouse off the Oakham Road. NB. More people were killed in the Hurricane of 38..over 500 than the Worcester Tornado.


The North Brookfield Historical Society did a marvelous presentation of the Hurricane of '38 a few years ago.
