GENERAL FRANCIS WALKER MEMORIAL MIT

The late Larry DeLude told me of a North Brookfield man who actually was

Walker Memorial M.I.T.

President of M.I.T. and hailed from North Brookfield! This is an amazing story for North Brookfield to claim the third president of M.I.T.

The name Amasa Walker is known by scholars of U.S. History. Amasa was the father of Francis. Francis graduated from Amherst College way back when. The important thing to remember is Francis Walker served in the Civil War and was in charge of the Census of 1870. After the Civil War ended Walker earned the title of Brevet General - one star.

Walker was president of MIT for years and more importantly is buried at Walnut Grove Cemetery. His headstone is unique! Another reason to visit this cemetery.

You can Wikipedia Francis A. Walker for the many details of this most interesting man's life!
