From the Encyclopedia of Wood.. TIME LIFE SERIES
The best song about trees and life! I had a back stage visit with Tony Orlando in Cheyenne, Wyo in 1998!
From toothpicks and birdhouses to telephone poles and railroad ties wood plays a big role in our lives. Wood is a commodity and the prices depend on their grades. No knots means more dollars. My Birch Hill Dream Home has some 3,000 square feet of "Cherry select." My office here has knotty pine which makes pine with big knots fashionable. My BLOGGER sign in my window 32" X 5"..select maple cost me $16.00!
Wood has to be dried. "KILN DRIED" is the best. Other dried woods take months.
Chain saws are very dangerous. Sharp chains "chip"; dull chains "powder."
In New England wood is plentiful. Fifty percent of the land has trees growing on it. Christmas Tree farms is another story.
In working all wood TOOLS MUST BE KEPT SHARP. Sawdust has an after use like Frank Chaffee and his farmer clients.
Sawdust is spread in the manure in the gutters.
Compressed woods are used in the fabricating of wooden sheathing.
Wood can be beautiful. Burled walnut and curly maple are two examples.
Pine is soft and walnut is hard and many specie fall in-between. Furniture can be fashioned by many specie. OAK is the hardest as is maple. Pine is soft....
Refinishing furniture is a popular activity with some antique dealers. Stripping, sanding and, staining followed up by sealing can make for a good hobby. Varnish, Lacquer, Stains, Oils Paste wax and Paint can be used. I have I have refinished furniture made good money at it!
Finally, the fireplace and wood stove.. for me, therapeutic in nature. All woods are created equal.. when you think of it as they all have lived a life before succumbing to a chainsaw or axe.
