WINE VILLAGE IN THE 21ST CENTURY

Wine Village, North Brookfield, Mass. evolved after the Civil War. Tax records reveal Mr. Mrs. Paul Wine and baby daughter came from West Brookfield in 1870. Eventually all three pieces of real estate were owned by PAUL WINE, PAUL WINE, AND PAUL WINE. Records further reveal in Temple's History of North Brookfield babies were born to big French-Canadian families and everybody made shoes in the Batchellor Shoe Factory.

Dad was born in a tiny home next to Coy Brook. Memere admitted to doing her wash in the brook. NB Six kids..Leo, Lydia, Olida,Blanche, Albert and dad. No radio until 1922..headphones..KDKA..Pittsburgh!, kerosene lamps and little education. French was spoken but one revealing fact was everyone had an automobile! The Klan moved to 11 South Main Street  in 1924.

There should be a historic marker entitled "WINE VILLAGE." My Late friend Ralph Whitman admitted to riding the Short Line Bus in WV and hearing Harold Dearden bellowing "Wine Village."

Today we have Ledoux's solar panels at Slate Hill and no evidence of George Whiting's cider mill..just the Name. New houses grace the fields that were once Wine Village.. I say Why Not!
