TRICK OR TREAT

A perfect night coming up!

In 1964 I was in my last semester at St. Louis University. I had a bizarre idea for Trick or Treat: Go trick or Treating with my aluminum and pewter St. Louis beer stein. I invited Susan Murphy to join me. It worked and we both got sloshed! "Trick or Beer!"

When you're young you are entitled to a charade! Not now. I will enjoy my grandkids.

PROPOSED TRIBUTE TO JFK &LBJ

I am in the process of acquiring ephemera of the John F. Kennedy Lyndon B. Johnson Era. It is exciting for me as I lived as a young man with two men Francis T. Lee and Philip A Quinn, Senator.


Not that the stuff is that valuable but is meaningful to me. Collectibles, if you may, tell a story of 50+ years ago.


It's too early for me to say what and where and when this tribute will be on display but I can assure you it will happen. November 22 is coming up and it is my intent to bring a display of JFK/LBJ locally. The sprit of Kennedy lives and as a disciple to the man it's my duty!

TWO OBSCURE ITEMS IN NORTH BROOKFIELD'S PAST

My year as a grocery clerk and delivery boy at LaBelle's Food Center proved to be revealing! Not only did I get the weather forecasts from taxi driver Charlie Bush I was recipient of local history and poignant events from F. James McCarthy.


The story of the Ku Klux Klan and Bert Boynton persisted. The late twenties saw the Catholics versus the Protestants in NB. It was real and things happened such as a big cross burning in the location of the Sportsman Club. Another family by the name of Moody was a Klucker. Jim related "one person was dunked in the horse watering trough!


The other event occurring in thee late thirties was the heist of the North Brookfield Savings Bank. Newspaper accounts were shared with Kirk Burnham formerly of the bank.


I have found newspaper archives as great sources of local history. Even copies of my blog with Telegram.com can be  found in West Brookfield.The North Brookfield history room at the Haston Library is a trove of the past. Enthused history buffs like Mike and Glory and others might visits. I would volunteer a class or two.

THE BIG BLACK HOLE OF WINTER

Noted columnist and baseball enthusiast George Will who once wrote MEN AT WORK speaks of baseball leaving a black hole when the baseball season ends was asked  by me 'Who is going to win the 1988 Presidential Election Dukakis or Bush? "TOO CLOSE TO CALL" was his answer.


Will is a brilliant mind and very formal in his speech. He called baseball manager Tony LaRussa 'MR. LARUSSA. I like Tony, too. Met him at Clark University and presented Tony with a signed Connie Mack book!

19th ANNIVERSARY OF COL. JOHN GLENN'S RE-ENTRY IN SPACE

Nineteen years ago I was credentialed to stay with the AP photographers as they staked out where their digital camera locations would be.I observed everything and how professional photographers did their job.


All the big whigs were present on the other side of town at the Kennedy Space Center, Florida. I stayed 9 days and had a chance to count 83 satellite trucks beaming their signals everywhere,

Travels like a snail .Space Shuttle crawler carries the "stack."
