The Boston Police Strike catapulted Governor Calvin Coolidge in to fame beyond reproach. Essentially Coolidge said "Nobody has the right to strike to strike against the public safety at anytime."
In 1920 Mr. Coolidge became the Vice-Presidential candidate for the Republican Party. In 1923 Coolidges father administered the Oath of Office in Plymouth, Vermont by the light of a flickering kerosene lamp. Amazing. Now he was our 23rd President! Old Milton Richardson of Foster Hill, WB , once told me ' WE PUT COOLIDGE IN THE WHITE HOUSE.'
The Coolidge legacy is alive 100 years later. Why? Because he was honest.
Today, I'm calling for a copy of his book Have Faith in Massachusetts.. It will include his speeches and salient photographs of "Coolidge Prosperity." You must recall CC was president during the Roaring Twenties. Then he shocked the Nation in a statement "I Do Not Chose To Run in President in 1928!"
Coolidge was a good man; he was only human. I know this as I had a one hour discussion of "Silent Cal" with his Late Son John Coolidge in Farmington, CT in 1978. Talk about a first person interview!
Over the years I have traveled to Coolidge's birthplace in Plymouth. He is to laid to rest there. Also, in Northampton, MA is the Calvin Coolidge Presidential Museum... a place I shall return, soon.
Coolidge's life will come alive again when I refresh my life-long love of "Silent Cal, the man.." "You lose" was his response to a question regarding his saying three words.."YOU LOSE!" The President died in 1933.
Thanks, Mr. President!
