A VERY COLD AND WINDY PAYDAY THURSDAY

It was a very windy Thursday. The Worcester airport recorded a gust to 59 mph! Did my banking early in the day and went about my business of putting away my clean laundry delivered by Josh. Got a haircut later in the day by Josh-the-Barber and enjoyed the dog Miley. It was the game shows in the evening after Norah O'Donnel's  news. For me it will be early to bed!

EARL NIGHTENGALE AND OTHER MONDAY REFLECTIONS

In my thirties I was exposed to the motivational message of Earl Nightengale. Last night son Ben reminded me of Earl's messages. Today I reviewed on Wikipedia just how profound Mr. Nightengle's messages really are. I recommend all readers to check our out this man's philosophy! This Monday saw mw go to Hannaford NB for a small amount of food. I have modified my daily meals to have more salads and NO popcorn! Watching Spring Training saw me relax and see the Yankees defeat Minnesota 9-2. My dirty laundry was picked up by Josh late in the day.All in all this Monday, too, was excellent!

AN AMAZING CLOCK & ANTIQUE AUCTION

On June 17, 1994 an auction of old clocks & antiques fetched $127,216! It was one of my biggest auction sales staged at the Southbridge Host Hotel. Through my friend & brother Dick Fuller this auction required much research. My clients were demanding and I responded accordingly. They insisted I do a direct mail to 7,000 members  of the National Clock & Watches members along with hiring a clock mechanic to oversee the mating and matching of old clocks. This auction had a large variety of old clocks: Banjo, Regulator, Schoolhouse, Calendar, O-Gee, Jewelers Regulator, Gingerbread. Cottage, Steeple, Chelsea, Cuckoo, 9 Grandfather clocks and many, many more.I hired two other auctioneers to keep things rolling. It was amazing indeed! The digital age and Internet today has changed everything.

AN AMAZING RARE COIN AUCTION

This Wednesday saw me reflecting on a major coin auction I did for the Late Robert Glass of Sterling, CT. All of the coins were in a bank vault in Ct. For six weeks I traveled from West Brookfield taking inventory of these coins. As I took inventory I decided to send my listing to ALL coin dealers in New England. My accountant suggested my fee would be 3% and $3,000. The preview would be held the day before. It was amazing to see the response.I stood on the stage with Mr. Glass as he called the bids. This response was I recall saw buffalo nickles rolls sell for $1,200.The bottom line to my earned commission came to $10,000. Glass sent me a letter of appreciation for the job I had none.Coin auctions, properly marketed can bring great results!

BE AN AUCTIONEEER!

I have enjoyed being an auctioneer over my lifetime. It all began in 1951 when Colby Johnson sold at auction the contents of my grandmother Potvin's estate. I was inspired in seeing this man's talent. At the same time Leroy Van Dyke's Auctioneer song further got me going. Then while living in Scituate  it was a church auction each June that lasted 10 years. Then in 1981 I attended Missouri Auction School in Kansas City for two weeks with sons Ben & Josh.My adventure was real. I had to learn a chant, a unique style and was made aware of product knowledge. An auctioneer is  business man. You gain confidence by researching the product.. be it antiques, land or automobiles, etc. You build a team being bid spotters, ring person in addition to cashiers. My background with a 13 year with Aetna as a claim administrator helped. An auctioneer is a promoter. My experience grew when I did foreclosure auctions for the North Brookfield Savings Bank and others. I have done antique auctions, land auctions, rare coin auctions and the like. My career saw me do 6 to 9 auctions a year. My self-confidence was good as standing in front of 150 potential buyers required being alert... and yes.. being honest! My further education saw me at the Certified  Auctioneer's Institute at Indiana University, Bloomington, IN.An auctioneer can be a fund-raiser. You are constantly looking for an "auction situation be it old coins, stamps, clocks, watches or autographs.Missouri Auction School is the Harvard of school and I encourage young  readers to this adventure to "Just do it!"

DAYTONA 500 WINNER:WILLIAM BYRON

This Daytona 500 was marred with major collisions! 22 cars finished the 500. Powered by a Chevrolet, Byron is a 26 year old from Charlotte, NC.Hendricks Motorsports was the sponsor. Byron won the race in the final lap! The 500 was reminiscent of my son Ben and my 10 year's attendance at the Charlotte Motor Speedway! Attending races in person was fun.

A FULL THURSDAY

My day began with a 9:00 o'clock appointment at Parson's Auto in East Brookfield. My Honda Accord EX-L had the oil changed and all levels topped off cost $49.75.. While waiting I picked up a Time Magazine featuring Taylor Swift. The article is a composite story of Swift's life. Amazing! A billionaire and then some. The story inspires me to play my video entitled "Olivia Newton-John Live at the Sydney Opera House." For an hour and a half I enjoyed watching and listening to 27 songs performed by Olivia. She gets my vote! Olivia (1948-2022.) Tonight it was "JFK A Day in America" on the Smithsonian Channel. Tonight Jeopardy had a final question on "Landmarks.." The Gateway Arch. Nobody knew it except me!

MY BAD IN WEATHER FORCASTING

Today's snow accumulation here in WB accounted to 2-3 inches! The media was slammed for making the wrong call. Connecticut and Rhode Island got a foot of snow but Boston and surrounds received little. Onward and upward. Josh came by and took my "dirty" laundry and fixed my channel selector to receive FS1, FS2 and CBSSN so tomorrow night I'll be able to watch Seton Hall basketball. The Pirates are playing Xavier. Tonight I watched St. John's play Providence at Providence  and are leading 63-56. Happy Valentines Day!

WEATHER-WATCHING CAN BE FUN!

The hype of the forthcoming snow storm brings me to the fore. I begin watching the barometric pressure then jump from Fox Weather to Pete Bouchard on NBC 10. Next, it's reviewing the speculation of Channel 10 in Providence to reviewing my historical perspective from my writings. In 1962 we saw 24 inches of snow on Valentine's day. My original "guess" was more than the latest predictions. Now I say we'll get around six inches! Wait and see!!

MY DAY IN THE SUNSHINE

Today seemed to be a complete Thursday for me. My first assignment was to go to the West Brookfield Art & Frame Gallery to have my Rotary Auction matted & framed. I chose a blue frame and attendant blue matting. While there I noticed a spiffy grandfather clock reproduction. This clock is a Howard Miller and is for sale! Looking for a grandfather clock? Stop by and see Rebecca Fay - 508-753-8604. Am having my Honda's oil changed at Parsons Auto in East Brookfield on Feb. 15th. Today was perfect for sitting in the sunshine. Did just that for an hour on a chair in my garage.Maybe tomorrow? Enjoying the Smithsonian Channel. Today was World War 2 in color.

A GOOD DAY FOR ME AND SETON HALL!

Thank God for little favors. My entire day was spent in anticipation of the Seton Hall/Georgetown basketball game. There wasn't any television game on FS1 so I reverted to my computer and watched the results on my computer. I was able to follow the two team's scores.I didn't know Dre Davis 25 points and Kadary Richmond's 20 points until it was over. Good game Hall 76-70 win. I re-discovered  Aerial America and watched both Iowa and Washington State. I will watch more states from now on.  The new LOVE postage stamps features a dog looking like Miley! Lily P turns 18 tomorrow. Happy Birthday Lily!

THE ROTARIAN JULY 1992

I had an article entitled "THE ROTARY AUCTION" " a surefire way to raise money for your club" published in 1992! This article fetched me $300! It went around the world to all Rotary members.Tomorrow I will have my copy matted and famed at the West Brookfield Frame Gallery. This Tuesday was beautiful with brilliant sunshine. Drove my Honda to North Brookfield's car wash where it was treated to "hot wax." then to Hannaford for food. I'm deliberating on writing some type of small book about my years as an auctioneer. The song "Auctioneer" by Leroy Van Dyke inspires me to this day.
