THE HISTORY OF THE MASSSACHUSETTS LICENSE PLATE

Some States call them TAGS but in Massachusetts they are twofold: VANITY and NOT INTERESTED!
MY  PRIDE AND JOY!

According to Wikipedia, the first plate was issued in 1903 to Frederick Tudor. So many people tried to steal his plates they had to be spot welded!

The first truck plate was issued in 1911 and began with the letter "B."

In 1917  the first six digit plates was issued.

In the late twenties Cod Fish were shown on plates.

The first Municipal plates were issued in 1931.

The first Veterans and Disabled Veteran plates were issued in 1949.

Antique plates were seen for the first time in 1951

Farm plates were available for issue in 1952.

Consular Corps plates were issued for dignitaries in 1955.

1957 saw Handicap plates and standardized size at 6" X 12".

In 1964 Amateur Radio plates came on the road.

1966 welcomed vanity plates  with two to six characters & MD plates.

In 1968 Ambulance and Hearse plates were welcomed on vehicles.

1973 saw Antique Motorcycle plates as a specialty.

1979 saw Handicapped Vanity plates for the first time.

'SPIRIT OF AMERICA' license plates were issued in 1987. My favorite!

1993  Veteran's plate varieties were first issued.. Purple Heart, etc.

1995 The Environmental Trust (whale plate)

1996 The Cape Cod and Island plates.

We have a wonderful variety of plates in Massachusetts.. but why such an indifference?
