A FRIDAY IN OCTOBER

The Brookfields are full of hills! From Bell Hill to Mount Guyot the rugged topography defines what we are about. Today, after locating the Rufus Putnam monument I scooted up Mendala's perch to view Mount Wachusett in Princeton. This hilltop is awesome. Check it out!

Next, I traveled over to Stoddard Road and paused to reflect on Mick Jaeger's visit in 1981. For weeks the Rolling Stones and others recorded in the now defunct LONG VIEW Studios. If you want to capture a spectacular sunrise travel to Stoddard Road. This view East is to kill for.

Then there's Slate Hill on the border of Wine Village. Not as big, perhaps, but meaningful. I'm sure my dad and his dad and his grandad played in the woods there.  HOG HILL as atop Fullam Hill Road with the power lines at hand. Do you think there were hogs on the hill years ago?! LOL.

Mount Guyot, too, is awesome. The Late Hervey Gadbois was a HAM radio operator and boasted of his receiving radio signals, maybe as far away as Australia. Bennett's Hill remains great for winter sledding. The prize winning hill in North Brookfield is BELL HILL. Distant points can be seen . North, South East and West. A definitive Landscape View from Bates Observatory on Bell Hill explains all distant vistas This map is in radius readings of 5 miles, 10 miles, 15 miles, 20 miles, 25 miles up to 50 miles where the Blue Hills Observatory lies in Milton. They say you can even see BOSTON!

In each town are figures of altitude: Bell Hill 1,200 feet above sea level; Coy Hill in WB at 1,190, Mount Wachusett 3,018.  The map was prepared by Shedd and Sarle of Worcester in 1894. It is accurate today as there are nobody to "Move every mountain!"

Do yourselves a favor and drive up to the Bell Hill Water Treatment Facilities and see Bates Observatory for yourselves! On Tuesday night I will make my presentation to the NB Board of Selectmen. Tomorrow morning I will be at the North Brookfield Historical Museum at 10:00 AM reviewing the artifacts of our NB heritage. Stop by! Bring your kids and grandkids! The museum is located in the bowels of the old MAC's TV next to the Town Hall.
