A BASKETBALL SATURDAY

I enjoyed watching Seton Hall tromp over St. Johns 88 to 66. It was refreshing to see the Hall come on strong and win. Maybe it will be a change for the new year?  I also watched Wyoming Lose along with Marquette win. The games made up for a dismal  day. Josh came by late in the day and picked up my trash. My only plans for the new year are to listen to  New Years from Vienna tomorrow at 11:00 a   tradition I have  enjoyed for years.

A LETTER FROM THE LATE HAMILTON GREGORY

Hi, Bob,

Your packages arrived this afternoon, and I have spent the evening reading and enjoying your writings.

Your reminiscences evoke so many memories for me.. near beer in basic, a mothers displeasure  of  her son going to  Vietnam, Long Binh and the fear of being killed on the toilet by a booby trap. and the black market and MPCs, lacquer painted boards as souvenirs, prostitutes and VD, dashing Australian soldiers with their swashbuckling uniforms, Red Cross "donut dollies", the fierce sunlight in Vietnam, the interminable out-processing and travel home ....and more.

I love your blog, and I appreciate your kind words about my  book.

All of your writings   taken together reveal you to be one of those one of those rare individuals who are capable of finding fun, zest, and friendship in life regardless of circumstances . I admire you!
Thanks for sending your manuscripts. You made my day.

Best Regards,

Hamilton

AN ERUDITE THURSDAY

It seems everything went my way this Thursday! I started by going to the Quaboag Book Shop looking for some books on anatomy. I was presented two books with the titles NETTER'S ATLAS of the Human Body  and ANATOMY: A  Regional of the Human Body.  Later in the day I went through both books   in entirety to get an idea of what they were all about. Both books are  awesome with colored  pictures of all aspects of  the human body with x-rays.  They will serve me well in the weeks and months ahead.  I am building a nice  reference library. I bought an Ohaus scale  to weigh silver and gold. Went to Hannaford for the basics.  Tomorrow I go to Tony's Cleaners. Talked to Josh briefly.

HUMP DAY

The day began with a surprise. The Warren Laundromat was closed. New washes were being installed  requiring me to go to the West Warren laundromat. This place is small and affordable. Met an interesting man named Ralph. Came back to West  Brookfield and decided to  subscribe to Numismatic News! Figured it was time to get some new ideas on old coins. Lee's Coins is changing hands so I plan on going over to EB tomorrow. Watched Olivia again. Spoke with Josh briefly.

RUBY TUESDAY

This has been a full Tuesday! Did my banking and paid my rent to Josh. Got a car wash book from Ernie's for $36 for Lily..  I got a haircut for "free".  Filled my pills then went to Quaboag to  watch Madeline play in two games. Lily called dad as she locked herself out of  her  VW  at Klem's. Josh had to bring a spare key to her rescue. Now I watch Seton Hall play Marquette who is leading at half time.

CHRISTMAS DAY 2022

My Christmas Day began with Josh installing a new Taylor Indoor-Outdoor digital thermometer and squirrel  trap. Went to Walmart-Ware to turn in my gift card only to find everything closed! Will return tomorrow.  The afternoon was spent at Ronnie's and Chrissies to have a great Christmas meal then presents. Folks are most generous. When I returned home I listened to Olivia. I'm on an x-ray kick so I watched "Doctors With X-Ray Vision." This was featured a while back with Bill Kurtis on PBS. I have a DVD of the program.

A BRUTAL AND CLEAR NIGHT BEFORE CHRISTMAS

The weather was brutally cold with readings of 8 above zero as I got the NY Times. I arrived at Josh & Heidi's  at 11 and I watched Josh prepare a prime rib  full course meal.  The spirit was high as my 4 grandkid's  watched dad.  After eating we watched The Sound of Music  a Christmas tradition. Then the exchange of presents began. Maddie presented me with  a 2 foot  horizontally  framed photograph  of the crowd  on my 80th birthday in July. It is creative.. framed.. and will find  a home in my office.  The focus of the presents was my gifts. I was given a pair of leather  slippers and two Olivia Newton-John  DVD and records. I have already played the DVD!  I gave KLEM  gift cards to all. A lucky man I am!

THE CALM BEFORE CHRISTMAS

The weather spelt this day before the day before Christmas. Here in the Brookfields rain and wind was the rule. The gales didn't dampen the  Christmas the day. I laid low until Josh called inviting me to go to Sturbridge with him to sell some rims and tires off of Lily's VW.  It was a good deal. Seems Josh knows how to employ the Internet to buy and sell! I'm of the old school.  There was a special on Gift Cards on tonight's news. SPEND THEM! Too many forget them or lose them. I will tell my family tomorrow to spend them!

WE NEED A LITTLE CHRISTMAS

We need a little Christmas is a song by Johnny Mathis. I have not heard this song until tonight! Found it on a CD  I own. The weather has turned to a cold rain and does not look gook good for days. Josh tells of talking to a lady in Demoines  where it was 16 below! Could be snow I hunkered down after going to Hannaford for food.

Watched Years of Lightening Day of Drums - a 86 minutes movie about JFK.

THE SHORTEST DAY OF THE YEAR

The shortest day of the year proved to be bright and very cold. After checking in with the Quaboag Book Shop for  x-ray  books and striking out I traveled to Warren to do laundry. Once again it was very quiet. I returned to the Poodle and enjoyed some New England Clam Chowder. Did receive a Christmas Card from Ben and Family and a Walmart girt card. Plan on going to Ware-Walmart tomorrow. Josh called and invited me for a bonfire at sunset. I stayed for an hour. Didn't get out of my car! A good day indeep!

A COLD DECEMBER MONDAY

This December Monday was cold! I went about my morning routine not having any particular plans. I made my money deposit and was disappointed the Quaboag Book Shop wasn't open! I'm anxious to find some books on x-ray technicians. I hope to find one or more to refresh my talents. Watched the Trump trial. I hope  he's caught in his own web of deceit. Got a call from Bill Gross in Washington. Worked on my mother's weather diaries. Will work more tomorrow. Maybe SS checks in tomorrow? Will finalize shopping tomorrow.

QUABOAG BOOK SHOP - WEST BROOKFIELD

Today I decided to go to the Quaboag Book Shop as I had a hunch  I would be successful in finding some books on METEOROLOGY. My hunch paid off as I found four books! The books were text books and in good shape. Four books cost me $31.29. Tomorrow I will return looking for some books on X-Ray technology. It seems all books are reasonably priced. I returned to Klem's for another gift card and now my Christmas Shopping is complete. As for the Patriot's defeat it's like the Red Sox "Wait until next year."

A COLD DECEMBER SATURDAY

I t was a surprise to see a coating of snow when I got up. By the time I got to North Brookfield there was more snow on the ground.! I did Hannaford to the tune of $60. I filled up my pill cady I was preoccupied with the Seton Hall-Providence basketball game and disappointed with their defeat. Providence played a better second half and they won! Josh called at 4:30 saying "dress warmly" as he was building a campfire. As hot as the fire was... I left after one hour as I was too cold. Chase and Lily were working their jobs.  I enjoyed some Vanilla Egg Nog!

QUABOAG GAMES

The girls defeated David Prouty and the boys got trounced. It was the best thing to do on a cold rainy Friday night in December. Chase and Maddie played. The day was an interior type of day. I got my dry cleaning and didn't go for the mail. Josh picked me up at 4:45 pm. There was a big crowd of Quaboag and David Prouty fans. Seton Hall plays Providence tomorrow noon at 12:30.p.m. My web site had 11 hits. No  American Legion visit tonight!

HERITAGE AUCTIONEERS

Heritage Auctioneers is the world's largest auction house. You may log onto HA.com/Auctions for the most current schedule.  I spent more than an hour reviewing a 600-page U.S. Currency Auction catalog. This is the biggest and the best! Chech it out. This Monday was a snow Monday. Josh cleared my driveway early on. We had about 3 inches of fluffy snow and made my exit downtown easy. I am fearful of falling and got mt mail after things melted.  Spent the later afternoon inside reviewing my mail and searching the blog for my writings. I can be found on many sites from Bob Potvin Meteorologist to Bob Potvin Adventure Man. Check me out!

SETON HALL 45 RUTGERS 43

This particular Pirate victory was one for the books! It seems The Hall was behind all night but in the final analysis the Hall won. Games like this build confidence. I know the Potvin men are happy. all of us. Ben, Josh, Chase and Pops! The victory wasn't expected. This Sunday saw snow come in during the afternoon and has gotten heavier as the night. Josh cleaned my garage early in the day and lowered the garage door for the Allante' for the winter. I got him two boxes of mothballs. All is well that ends well!

A COLD SATURDAY OF SEACHING

A cold day of searching for an antique postcard of an auctioneer. I located a copy but no original. My searching brought me to two drawers of a file cabinet then onto the top drawer of my high boy full of photographs. I go through this vast collection about two times a year. It has birthday cards and other collectibles to include photographs of family photos. I did find an autographed photo of LBJ! The signature isn't real, but it was something I got in college at SLU.  Traveled to Birch Hill where Josh had a campfire. I stayed for an hour and friends arrived. Terribly cold so I left. I resorted to using a heating pad!

A FRIDAY BEFORE THE SNOW STORM

I enjoy watching the Weather Channel! It seems the talented meteorologists are bright and entertaining. The forthcoming snows are forecasted days in advance.  The enthusiasm of the crew is formidable and by the time the storm arrives maybe there'll be some truth! I still enjoy Boston's Pete Bouchard. Today was clear and very cold. I spent my day reviewing more blog entries before going to the Legion Post with Josh. Christmas is in the air. I mentioned to Josh how beautiful our little town with all Christmas lights.

TWENTY YEARS OF BLOGGING COMING UP IN MARCH

I keep track of much of what I write! My archives date back to 1954 with accounting of snowstorms and hurricanes. My earliest documents are handwritten then typewritten documents when I took typing as a sophomore. All these years later since 1954 my archives are intact. Today I reviewed all of them! Then when On the Common came in March 3, 2003, I became a blogger! I have many copies of correspondence bound for review. What gives I don't know? My late mother Rita kept a daily weather diary for 25 years! I have these in my back room. Today was a good day for introspection. I did just that. Tomorrow will be better. Now Seton Hall plays basketball!

GOOD MORNING VIETNAM

I have a copy of Good Morning Vietnam starring Robin Williams. I have not watched the tape in three or four years and today was the day to watch it! The movie reminds me of my year in Vung Tau. The gist of the movie evokes the many scenes and reminds me of 1967-1968.I have a tiny tv if anybody is interested. In other matters was the day I went to the VA in Worcester to have my eyes checked. The bottom line is my vision is the same as it was a year ago. Had new pair corrected for alignment. Working on the many albums of memoirs. My day was good despite the gloom. Enjoyed Orville Redenbacher's gourmet popping corn!

FROSTBITTEN TRIP TO LUNGREN HONDA

It was the first time I drove with the driver's window down! It was about 19 degrees, and I was ready for it I called Lundgren Honda and was told a diagnostic fee of $143.00 was to be charged. I agreed. It was about 21 miles cross country, and I didn't know what to expect. The window wouldn't go up. The technician took my Honda and I waited about 30 minutes. The bottom line is the window was fixed. It was repaired for the $143.00. "If it happens again will need new driver's window run channel and regulator." Next time may be expensive! I'll take my chances!

BEAUTIFUL WEST BROOKFIELD

The center of West Brookfield looked right for the occasion - beautiful!  Every aspect of our town was "Open House." White flags were the invitation for folks to shop, ride, socialize, and just enjoy this Sunday in December.  I didn't stop perse however I took it all in Beautiful! My Honda's left front window isn't working. Had problems with it a couple weeks ago now. I must drive around with the window down, Will contact Lundgren-Auburn for an appointment.

IT IS MY DECISION NOT TO GO TO WESTON

The decision on not to attend the Spellman Museum in Weston is common sense! Jeff Nickerson persuaded me to stay home and do laundry! This Friday was good. I enjoyed some popcorn and did other things. Visited Chase & Evie in his Jeep and rode around New Braintree and North Brookfield. Showed them Bates Observatory in NB. Chase got a haircut and seemed to be on the mend. The food service at the Legion wasn't good! Jeff took care of matters.

A VERY COLD WINDY THURSDAY IN DECEMBER!

A new month with gale force winds.  It was strong enough to put branches on the ground! I paid my Arbella insurance of $810 in the morning. I called Chase at noon, and he agreed to see at 2:00. I visited him for one half hour. Lily and Maddie came home from school where we chatted a bit with Maddie on her promotion to varsity basketball. I am considering in driving to Weston to the Spellman Museum on Saturday. It is 58 miles.
