UNEVENTFUL TUESDAY

The weather continues to make the headlines. Today was a real disappointment with a heavy cloud cover all day... then at 5:00 PM a small thunderstorm arrived. We did not see the sun today.

The Town of North Brookfield made the headlines in the USA TODAY! "Massachusetts.. North Brookfield:, The Board of Health in this small town is at odds with the Select Board over the decision to hold an Independence Day celebration."

Much of my viewing day was watching American Pickers. Todays program featured discovering antique automobiles including Model As and a Rolls Royce. This perked my renewed interest in discovering another Cadillac Allante'! Not today!

One more day of lousy weather then cooler I hope! Enuf!

My back rash has returned. Thanks a lot.

LIGHTENING STRIKE ON BIRCH HILL!

Blood glucose 120   Weight 169lbs

Last night at 7:35pm Josh called to relate 'lightening struck a tree in the middle of the field to the East'! Amazing as it is the one bolt destroyed this tree to smithereens. I feel getting lightening rods on the house is in order!

The fine June weather has turned into undesirable daily thunderstorms. We do need the rain but please don'T rain on our parades!

My good friend Lowell V. Arms called from Concord, NC. We chewed the fat about old times and kept the fire glowing. We are NBHS graduates, veterans of Vietnam, Worcester Junior College and other good things.

The other excitement on Birch Hill is the Potvins have a new-used speed
boat! Details will follow. Timing is great as the kids will  learn about waterskiing and all good things. I might ride in it with a life vest but that's it.... too old to learn new tricks! LOL. Chase drove again in the field showing me the tree that was struck. Amazing!

Spoke with Dr. Shankar's office about my  back pain. An MRI has been ordered for July 9th in Waltham at 5:00 PM. I endure the pleasantries of old age!

A CLOUDY, MUGGY, RAINY SUNDAY

It seems the beautiful week of sunshine and low humidity has run its course! Air-conditioning prevailed as did news shows, NASCAR-Pocono, American Pickers and solitude ruled the roost. I did enjoy MECUM Auto Auction and was thrilled to see a 1933 Chevrolet roadster sell.It reminded me of my '33 Chevrolet Coupe! A visit to Josh at mid-afternoon provided for some relief.

We did chores and going to the hardware store, Piermarini Pool, the car wash in Warren, and other local places. Then Josh came to the Poodle and made some minor repairs to the front rail and back screen door. I watched.

Now we have an electrical storm and heavy rains so Il'' close for now! Kbam! Chase called. Lightening struck a tree in the field!

Did watch the McGwire-Sosa Contest

A NOT-SO-PERFECT SATURDAY!

The mood changed overnight. Cloudy weather prevailed and by afternoon showers came on for several hours. I feel the rain is needed  and it appears we'll have a daily dose of rain in the days ahead.

Josh & I entered into some very important official business which remains a secret for now.

The television highlight of my Saturday was NASCAR from POCONO. I think Kevin Harvick won the race. Another race tomorrow afternoon. Stay tuned.

I watched more of Days of Lightening Days of Drums. The one conclusion I have about my military time is IT WAS MY PEACE CORPS! I have no regrets in serving my Country. The training instilled confidence in yours truly and then some.

I am amused by Trump believers who take everything he says as gospel! The man is a liar! He didn't place first in his class in college!!!!

ANOTHER PERFECT DAY

This Friday was as good as it comes! I spent two hours at Josh's enjoying the kids and visiting friends.. Jay & Brian. The men had two grills going and I said "I'm a vegetarian."

In the afternoon I watched VP Pense Company then I did a two hour Cape Cod review on You Tube. It seems I yearn for my moments as a National Park Ranger back in 1964!

The review allowed me to watch Years of Lightening Day of Drum.. a documentary recounting the Kennedy years in the White House. I bleed JFK and will until the day I die! Each time I watch the special I come back with new insights. To say the least JFK dealt with major issues on race relations and the threat of war. I highly recommend any one interested watch the program!

Rain is in the forecast tomorrow afternoon. We certainly can use the water!

SUNNY THURSDAY IN JUNE

This day was highlighted by two interviews by John R. Boulton! I watched both and have concluded his responses against Donald R. Trump are plausible!

America is in siege! It seems there is no easy answer to all of the venom being cast. Further the coronavirus epidemic is headed in the wrong direction. People who don't wear masks are in trouble including The President!

Had a nice visit with Chase & Josh on Birch Hill. Too hot for a fire. Chase proudly told me 'I got my report card and I am in the top ten of my class!' Good news to end the school year.! Enjoyed
Wheat Thins and sliced cheese and a Seltzer.

Had a phone visit by Denise RN..VA. It was agreed I contact my doctors to address my severe pain, etc.

Friday as usual.. dry good - cleaners!

A MUGGY CLOUDY DAY TURNED CLEAR

Blood glucose 113

Another summer's day. Got paid Social Security so that felt good. Watch more of Trump and the Polish president.
Did go food shopping in NB.

At Josh's for 5:00 PM. Our daily meeting is always good. Chase and Evie were about in the swimming pool.

Denise the VA nurse calls tomorrow at 11:00 AM. My biggest complaint is the on-going sciatic burning pain on my right thing. No pain-relief drugs help.

CHASE DRIVES POP'S CAR.. AGAIN!

Another hot day in the Brookfields! Much of my day was watching tv in air-conditioning. I watch Dr. Fauci testify on the future of coronavirus. I feel the poor guy is trapped with reversing findings.

The vandalism of the Columbus statue at Union Station, Worcester, made news. Two clowns poured red paint on Columbus' head at 3:30 AM. I had a suspicion the statue would be vulnerable to crime!

Trump's trip to Phoenix and his speech was noteworthy. I followed his message closely. We'll have to read what the journalists write for the morning newspapers. Maybe there's an element of truth in his message?! "Law & Order!"

At 5:00 PM I drove over to Birch Hill. Seems the day cleared and the breeze picked up?! The highlight came when Chase asked me "Can I drive, Pops?" I was thrilled to ride around the field as a passenger! The young man is demonstrating an interest in driving. I even lifted the hood and explained basics of the engine. "What's power steering?" he asked!

Another summer day... another good day!

MY O'DOUL'S MONDAY

Since 1993 at this time at the All Star Game at Camden Yards I have enjoyed a bottle of O'Doul's! My abstinence from all alcoholic drinks began in 1983 and continues today!
Today was a good Monday. Laundry and power spraying my Honda began another hot Summer's day.

Received a gift card from Ben & Allison to Walmart. I chose to buy  a new Serta pillow. Comfort is tantamount to my night's repose. I sleep in AC comfort and am aided by a large fan.

All of the news is so upsetting. Donald J. Trump isn't leading the Country in the right direction! He lies and distorts the truth. Just look at the attendance exaggeration in Tulsa! Trump is merciless .

The ruination of statues in America is another example of social unrest! This long hot summer will try the souls of all Americans!

He lies!

REMEMBERING DAD ON HIS DAY

I learned a lot from my dad, Joe, in his 70 years on earth! Born in 1913, the fifth of six children, Joseph Emil Potvin grew up in North Brookfield...first in Wine Village then at 11 South Main Street. Joe, at a young age demonstrated mechanical skills. At 14 he crafted a miniature car he could sit in.

Life was a struggle for dad. He was forced in quitting school at age 14. 'I cried but my father insisted I work in the shoe factory to help in family expenses.' He obliged.

Dad worked for H.H. Brown as a bedlaster until after WWII ended. He married mother in 1936. Then he was recruited by my uncle A.L.Potvin - Builder. Uncle Al and dad built houses in the Brookfields for 20 years...more than twenty in all. Summit Terrace NB was fashioned by Al and dad.

I was extremely close to my dad. I observed every move he made. As a result I learned traits of a carpenter. Growing up as a teen I worked along side Uncle Al and dad as a carpenter's helper.

On the personal side dad enjoyed a good time. He would play the harmonica as he socialized with family.  My father was a moderate man. Church was attended every Sunday with mother.

Sister Jan had 5 children and I .. Ben & Josh.

In dad's retirement he was fascinated in burning wood for the parlor stove. All along dad would say "Bobby, you take care of me when I'm old!" And I did. Dad helped me restore two homes in West Brookfield. He also saw me begin raising my two sons Ben & Josh.

Dad lived to be 70 and had a stroke. In his years as my father, I learned the value of picking nuts on Donovan Road and other things. He was exemplary in setting an example. He never owned a new car but every car was like new. He hemmed his new suit pants bought from Max Cohen and espoused "everybody should have a sense of humor!"

"The best a man can do.. is to do his best!" How lucky can I be as I reach my 78th year on July 29?!

A NINETY DEGREE SATURDAY IN THE BROOKFIELDS

Higher humidity saw this day more uncomfortable. After food shopping and getting the mail I remained in the AC of my home. I set the temp at 72. The anticipated tag sale didn't materialize.. wrong address! Josh picked up a used mower for $20...junk? More sales around town.

Chase Robert, sporting a new haircut, reported to mow my lawn at 4:00 PM.
The young man is ambitious and learning all about life! Afterwards I brought him home. I was advised of a rally organizing on Maple Street. Drove by the group in front of the library and chose not to get involved.

I followed the news on Oklahoma & Trump all day and opted to gong the President after 20 minutes. The crowd was smaller than purported to be. Mike Pense lauded Mr. Trump. Seems the BS is coming on strong!

Talk about the absence of masks at the BOK

k Center. Maybe 5 in one hundred? Seems there's lot of hypocrites...."Don't do as I do.. do as I say!" Watch the numbers in OK rise!?

Fathers Day tomorrow. I am the proud father for Ben and Josh...a delight to be called DAD for almost 50 years! Thanks men!

A MARVELOUS FRIDAY NIGHT ON BIRCH HILL

The party began at six. Josh and family spent part of the afternoon on the lake. I got an invite from Josh for 6:00 pm.

The mood was light as all of family and friends arrived to play the 'music game.' I sat back in my easy chair taking it all in.

It seems the day cooled off as the shade overtook sunshine. The breeze was gentle. More than a dozen kids swam in the pool independent of mom and dad! Chase was whittling on a stick and his friends arrived. Also, allowed him to drive in Honda in the mowed field!

Earlier in the day I strolled through the back roads of North Brookfield. I continue to be impressed with attractive houses on Smith Hanson Road, NB mixed in with a dairy farm or two.

Received an illustrates book from the U.S. Mint! Good ideas on $$$$$$$$$$!

Josh alerted me to a Multi-Family estate sale tomorrow at 9:00 AM on Birch Hill Road WB! See you there!

POPS GOES FOR A SWIM!

The conditions were right for dunking my body in the swimming pool at Josh's! I didn't have a suit so I went in with my Bermuda shorts.

. More than a dozen kids were looking in amazement! My footing was uncertain and Chase was at my side! Success. The water wasn't cold at all.

This Thursday was quiet. My AC has been on since 7:00 AM and I 'm living in comfort.

Trump was on TV preparing for his show in Tulsa on Saturday. Anything gives. It seems the president is constantly reminding us on how great he really is!

Hopefully this blog entry will not be lost!

A FANTASTIC TUESDAY!

The cool of the night provided for ideal sleep! The day began with voting. My flagadilic trousers were a hit at the polls and at Hannaford. Having worn both versions in the past 4 days I'll give them a rest.

Brilliant sunshine was almost too much as I sat outside for about 20, minutes.

In the afternoon I did more research on President Calvin Coolidge. "CAL" is my favorite. His Presidential Museum is at the Forbes Library in Northampton. I have traveled to Plymouth Notch, VT over the years. I even interviewed his late son John Coolidge when I lived in Windsor, CT.

SonJosh had different plans for me at 5:00. No fire but a visit to the second floor of his barn. I negotiated the railing-less steps with help. The view of his estate gives great perspective from the second floor. Chase came by visiting us for a bit.

In summary this one day was truly fantastic!

A NICE MONDAY IN JUNE

Blood glucose 100    Weight 171lbs

This Monday was good. I routinely went about my chores to include power washing my Honda. I believe in keeping a clean vehicle inside & out. You? A clean car or truck makes a statement regardless of age, etc.

VOTE TOMORROW!

Spent part of my day riding around North Brookfield on back roads. There are some very attractive homes on Fullam Hill Road. I used to go horseback riding with Diane Cooke in the early 60s when all of the road was forested  and undeveloped. Today a great rural neighborhood indeed.

Josh didn't have a camp fire but instead invited me to ride to Ware with his three girls. Interesting! I think I got his sniffles tonight!

Clearing has set in with sunset. Another cool night!

A COOL CLOUDY SUNDAY

Early morning temperatures were in  the 40s. As the day progressed cloudy conditions prevailed. I enjoyed watching Jane Pauley on CBS Sunday Morning.

The highlight of this Sunday comes now on NASCAR - Miami. Lightening has delayed the race for about 2 hours. I enjoy the color of the race cars literally and figuratively.

At mid-afternoon I visited Josh. The hayfields are being mowed and ready for bailing in a day or two... "gotta make hay while the sunshines!

ANOTHER GREAT DAY IN JUNE!

No campfire today! I don't know where Josh & family went. No sign of anybody at the appointed hour.

Earlier in the afternoon I visited old Bob Benson who is now 90 years young! Mr. Benson is truly Mr. West Brookfield. He remains very active in performing home inspections for the fire department. I like Bob.

Moments earlier I mailed  Fathers Day card to Ben in Belmont, NC. As I walked back to my car a man approached me asking if he could take my picture with him..one Doug Aspinal. Sure.. why not! My flag trousers set the tone.

The Quaboag Book Shop is open for business W,Th,Fri, Sat, Sun.

This one day was a winner!

MY NEW BRAINTREE GETAWAY IN JUNE

When all else fails I drive to New Braintree for solace. This time of the year all trees are in full foliage. This Saturday I caught Denis Long at home and we chatted for ten minutes. Denis is a warrior. He has rheumatoid arthritis and now walks with two canes. Denis is my esteemed friend.

Kip's Christmas Tree Farm stands out and is exemplary for all tree enthusiasts.

A stroll up Cushman Road affords a fabulous view looking west. New Braintree never grows old with me!

WEST POINT GRADUATION 2020

It was a two hour ceremony in brilliant sunshine; it was a time of evoking memories of my U.S. Army time 1966-1968.

I was almost 24 when I was drafted in the U.S. Army. Initially I was to become an officer in the U.S. Marines.! As fate would have it I received a call from Capt. William B. Williams asking me "If I could wait until August?" The proposed school at Quantico was full. I, in turn asked "Can I get out of this?" "Yes" I requested to be disenrolled. I then said I'll take my chances. I got drafted on May 13, 1966!

Only a veteran can identify with Army life. It is humbling as well as being rewarding. Basic training in May in Kentucky was fun. I lost weight and never felt better. Advanced training at Ft. Sam Houston, TX was like "going back to college!" I was trained to be a medic with a specialty in X-Ray technology. After training I was shipped to Vietnam!

Twelve months and twelve days saw me enduring the life of a GI. I achieved by becoming Soldier of the Month E-5. I traveled to Australia for my R&R and became friends with the Australian troops who were stationed nearby in Vung Tau.

Seeing today's Cadets in graduating ceremony tells me I did the right thing by serving my Country. I thought 'Maybe one of my grandchildren will go to West Point? Madeline or Savannah or Evelyn?

AN IDYLLIC FRIDAY IN JUNE

Everything about this day was fine. I went about my business of buying food and picking up my dry cleaning. I watched my share of American Pickers then at 5:00 I traveled to Birch Hill. Josh ignited the campfire as I arrived.

The afternoon sun was aided by a West wind. We chatted about things then friends began arriving with their kids. The girls were swimming in the pool. More kids and parents arrived and we listened to Rock103. The adults have a contest with an anti in naming the artist. Money is to be won. Not me.

I remained until about 7:00.

This type of June evening reminds me of how DAD and I used to sit out on chairs in our front lawn enjoying the evening. This was such an evening: Idyllic!

THURSDAY AS USUAL

This Thursday was usual until Josh, Chase and bespectacled Little Evie came in with hammers in hand. All three climbed to the second floor and began hammering away! I don't use the second floor. The demolition crew had ideas. Being that I don't climb stairs I assented to their wishes.

Josh let the kids tear down walls and pick up the mess. What could I say? Hey, it's Josh's house and my home! My grandkids have industry!

Then Evie was interested in my big TV. She spoke into the remote and landed her favorite show. The name escapes me. It was entertaining for Chase, Evie and  yours truly.

.

Earlier my shiny Honda got wet so I wiped it down and put it to bed in the garage. I love having a clean automobile!

AN UNEVENTFUL WEDNESDAY

The comfort of air-conditioning gave me a exceptional night's sleep! The morning began cool. It warmed up so by noon I sat out in the sun about one half hour.

I haven't resolved my left rear noise. I stopped off to George's Tire Place. He has a replacement tire for $100 with the caveat "if you replace the tire the same problem may recur." I might chance it for now.

My pill caddy needed refilling so I spent an hour replenishing supplies. It seems I have enough drugs in my cabinet for a year!

Birch Hill was quiet without a campfire. Josh was our straight with work and the kids weren't around except for Chase who was on the run. I sat in solitude observing nature. A brilliant red cardinal streaked across the sky. Then Josh went for a 23 minute run.

Kemp-Nut called just in time for Jeopardy.

Bright skies gave way to cloudy conditions with increasing humidity. We will be in for thunder, etc. tomorrow.

A DIFFERENT TUESDAY

It was a different kind of Tuesday for me. I did inquire with one dealer about new tires but didn't make any commitment. I will decide in the next few days as it's time.

Got my clean dry cleaning in Spencer and noticed The Salvation Army in Spencer has reopened. I have no desire to buy stuff I no longer need. Howard's now has picnic tables set outside.

Didn't follow any of the funeral. My high point in the day was visiting Josh on Birch Hill. The girls.. Lily, Maddie and Evie were playing on the hammock! Gave Maddie a National Geographic book on Moon Landing. It is fun seeing these kids enjoying life. Josh took time for a 3.5 mile run as I remained in my easy rocking chair.

Chase and I chatted then Josh returned to build a fire with green branches! I listened to Donna Diana on my Smartphone! Tonight I watched NORMAN VINCENT PEALE on YouTube! I like Rev. Peale's messages.

A DELIGHTFUL JUNE MONDAY

I had a busy Monday between doing laundry and checking out my situation with my Honda. I drove to Auburn for a second opinion. The service manager leaned towards "bad" tires so tomorrow I will shop for new "skins."

I got s surprise from Spectrum just now. I was told I was behind in my cable bill! It seems the May payment wasn't recorded! No record on my bank statement... SO I must resolve matters. I pay my bills!!

The setting sun is providing delightful clouds in the West. Safe to say "June is busting out all over!" Enjoy the moment!

WORCESTER TORNADO,JUNE 9, 1953

I wasn't quite 11 when the Worcester Tornado hit! I was a boy working in my basement on South Main St, North Brookfield. As I recall all conditions were ripe for such an occurrence. High humidity and a depressing moment set the tone.

Some of the first eyewitnesses came from men leaving work in Worcester at Nortons. I heard of men riding in their car pressing the throttle to the floor and not moving!

The 1953 Worcester tornado lasted1 hour and 18 minutes. It is an F4 tornado. Word traveled fast. I heard of Assumption College being devastated. From the onset in Petersham it traveled through Worcester, Shrewsbury, Southborough and Westboro, 10,000 people were left homeless. 94 people were killed in all.. 60 from Assumption College.

A SUNDAY DELIGHT IN JUNE

Blood glucose 89

This Sunday was without air conditioning. Low humidity and clear skies gave way to cloudiness for a while. I sat out for some sun but it lasted only for a half hour. Then late in the day clear skies came back.

My routine trip To Hannaford saw some shrimp cocktail for a treat. Of all the crowd only one lad was without a mask! I didn't say anything. My buddy in Georgia encountered the same thing and HE SPOKE UP! It seems weird to see everybody masked up!

Birch Hill Road is open again.  The gigantic pine has been cut up but not removed. Quite a mess! Josh said he has much clearing to do.

NASCAR from Atlanta took much of my late afternoon. K. Harvick won the race. It's interesting to see the pit stops and tire changes.

Tomorrow, laundry, dry cleaners and Honda dealer in Auburn perhaps. I love my spiffy detailed black car. It's like new!

TORNADIC WINDS ON BIRCH HILL!

The Weather Channel's headlines at mid-afternoon was "Tree across Birch Hill Rd. West Brookfield, Mass."! Son Josh had called me saying "I clocked winds at 49 mph. Later he states Phil Rembisewski clocked 70 mph! I checked matters out to find a huge pine tree across the road at the Adams property.

Received a birthday card sent to Son Ben with the correct address.. "Return To Sender!"

My shiny black Honda passes my test. It is beautiful and worth every penny in having it detailed!

National Grid bill $84.74. Last month it was $142.74.

Received another new mask from Sister Jan! "Stick Em Up."

Received an inordinate amount of drugs from the VA...unsolicited!!!!!!!
Must resolve this.

A FRIDAY WITHOUT WHEELS

Blood glucose 103         Weight 172lbs

It was a Friday without an automobile. My Honda is being detailed in Warren and will be ready tomorrow at 11:00AM. I look with anticipation in seeing how the car comes out.

The majority of time today was spent watching American Pickers. I enjoy the segments of the show and yes, I even learn a thing or two. Other stuff watched was Trump and National news.

Josh came by after 4:00 PM getting me out for an hour or so. Had a bowl of clam chowder made by Ronnie M.  Clearing came after a cloudy Friday.  It was a good day.

THURSDAY

I had high hopes of my Honda being repaired. Not so! The mechanic said it wasn't a wheel bearing but my tires! I didn't agree so I said PASS!

The car was dropped off in Warren for a detail at Moe's. It'll take longer than I had hoped for. "Saturday morning!" In turn I remained home all day. I did watch Rev. Al Sharpton deliver the eulogy in Minnesota at the George Funeral. His sermon was passionate! I agree with his messages.

Josh was tied up with the kids and said to me "I'll pick you up to go swimming tomorrow!" The pool's temperature is 72 degrees! I agreed.

Will have Amanda deliver my two newspapers in the morning.

Life goes on!

A CLOUDY WEDNESDAY TURNED CLEAR

I layed around the fort much of the day. My pain is real. I find comfort in being seated in my easy chair.

On my way to Josh  Heidi's estate I noticed a fawn as I pulled into the long driveway! It stared at me for a minute then hopped off into the woods down by the frog pond!

Josh was finishing up mowing when I arrived. Evie was fast at work in the garage building more bird houses and other things. Chase was trying to complete a Rubic Cube.

I sat in the shade for an hour and a half as the focus turned to cleaning the swimming pool. Once again Evie took charge cleaning it with dad. Today there wasn't any music blaring. I enjoyed watching the birds and the bees fly around. My solitude was enjoyed!

When I was leaving Josh said " Come back tomorrow at the same time! Will do! Tomorrow the Honda goes to the garage for a wheel-bearing replacement!

A BLAND TUESDAY

Things were quiet for the most part today. I did mail a package of my achievements as an auctioneer to St. Louis University along with a check for $25 for the alumni fund.  We shall see if they are interested in my story. I also sent a copy of my "Antique Dealer" book.

Got a call from San Diego regarding Allante's I'm begging off on pursuing of another such car.

The highlight of the day came with my traveling with Josh & kids to Leicester. The quest was looking at a golf cart! We had fun finding three of them...nothing special. Josh also treated us to some Dairy Queen in Spencer. We also inspected a used JEEP for sale in Brookfield. Chase seems to becoming more interested in owning a vehicle. He turns 16 in November.

AN EMOTIONAL MONDAY

Blood glucose 107   Weight 172 lbs.

The newspaper headlines tell  it all. The president is in great trouble; the Country is on fire. It is terrible and who know what lies ahead?

My day was good. Laundry in the morning then getting quotes for a repair to my Honda.. left-rear when bearing. Two prices $350.00 and $400.00. Repair to be done on Thursday.

I have arranged to have MO detail my car. Repairs and detailing will make it spiffy-new.
