MY "CLEAN HOUSE" WEDNESDAY

Wow! The change-of-pace day for me was very rewarding. I am "Standing Tall" from stem to stern. Bathroom, kitchen, bedroom, office all pass my sniff test... clean clear through.

The meal at the NB Senior Center was five stars. The table company was great too.

The North Brookfield Town Hall paint job is very impressive. Rick has spearheaded the task and has a machine to do the ladder work.
Kudos to the men of paintbrush. Keep it going!

The days are short and the nights are long. Tomorrow we move into November. What to do? I must attend my friend's funeral in Wilbraham at5 10.00. Losing good friends is like losing part of your existence. Such is life.

Getting ready for a hot tub. ETB..(early to bed.)

TRICK OR TREAT 2018

Once upon a time I was a college student who pulled a prank: Me and Susan Murphy went out with our beer mugs and proceeded to get high on other people's beer! It was "TRICK OR BEER!"  LOL.

Today the lawn figures go to the extreme! No mention of names!

Have fun!

  as tomorrow is NOVEMBER 1!

"PERSISTENCE" by PRESIDENT CALVIN COOLIDGE

Nothing in the world Can take the place of PERSISTENCE!
  • Talent will not: nothing is more common than unsuccessful men with talent.
  • Genius will not; unrewarded genius is almost a proverb.
  • Education WILL NOT; THE WORLD IS FULL OF EDUCATED DERELICTS.
Persistence and Determination are

alone omnipotent. The slogan "Press On" has solved and always will solve the problems of the human race.

MY WORLD-CLASS TUESDAY TO SOUTH BOSTON

My trip to Bean town proved to be a Double Header of fun! The 'new & improved' JFK Bookstore saw my dollars go for a reduced ticket price of $8.00 being a Senior and a Veteran. I bought a neat book entitled : INAUGURAL ADDRESSES Theodore Roosevelt to Donald Trump. My friend, Mike Hancock no longer works in the store.. he has been promoted to ticket sales.

The JFK Library & Museum is fresh! Many displays reveal the highest quality of audio-visuals. The displays are outstanding. I took my time savoring every one as I spend 2 hours reading and absorbing. JFK admitted "I like history" and it certainly shows in all of the countries he visited before getting into politics.

I paid particular attention how each display was laid out in Lucite cases. Sparkling clean..the museum gets very high grades. My lunch was a cup of New England Clam Chowder, a hot blueberry muffin and a bottle of water.
The distance from West Brookfield is 70 miles.. and is easy to find..Mass Pike to I-93 South.. Exit 15.

The second part of my sojourn was across the way at the MASSACHUSETS ARCHIVES. What a wonderful place to absorb our heritage!   Everything today is computerized. Everything is comprehensive when you do a search. I did on my Wine side of the equation and learned my Great Grandfather was listed as a Junior. Never knew this!

The whole enterprise of archival resources is under the direction of William Francis Galvin, Chair of the Massachusetts Historical Commission and Secretary of the Commonwealth. It will take me several visits to absorb the highlights of our great BAY STATE'S history. Displays abound at the archives and it is just across the way from the JFK!

I was smart in traveling "after school busses." The bottom line to my World Class Tuesday IS THAT IT WAS!

Looking back over my 7 hour trip...IT WAS A PIECE OF CAKE!

MY WORLD CLASS MONDAY TO NORTHAMPTON

My journey this Monday was splendid! After a fitful night's sleep and a phonecall to Frank Tencza's widow, Janie, I shoved off for Northampton, MASS. My goal was to visit the Calvin Coolidge Presidential Library and Museum. This one presidential museum is free  and a world-class library it is.

Julie Bartlett Nelson, Archivist, is the purveyor of one John Calvin Coolidge.. 30th President of the United States. It was a delight to reviews all of the glass cases of presidential memorabilia on this "Red Sox" Monday! As I have visited this museum a couple of times before, today I was ready for a treat.

American history comes alive when we interpret the lives of famous people. In Calvin Coolidge's case it was learning more about this taciturn Yankee from Plymouth Notch, VT. Being a graduate of Amherst College '95 and a politician in every sense of the word both in Northampton and Beacon Hill, Boston, my table was set for pleasure.

A myriad of books graces the shelves and a myriad of photographs capture the moods of a quiet president. As I walked around the museum I delighted in garnering more ammo i.e. the truth about historical societies and public libraries. The truth is some fight while others embrace.

There is a call for peaceful co-existence so the truth is to be absorbed by the reading public. More later.

I also stopped off at the Family Store of the Salvation Army in Hadley. Bought 2 books: "Marketing to the Social Web" and "Edit Yourself. These two books coast me lass than $5.00 for both. Such a deal. The library of books at the SA is worth crowing about.

I also traveled to the VA in Leeds without success in obtaining 2 refills on scripts." I tried."

Travel on Route 9 was a piece of cake.

Thus ends my World Class Monday. "

"GO CAL!"

REMEMBERING FRANK TENCZA

This man, Frank W. Tencza, left a life-time impression on my soul. We met at Saint Louis University in the Fall of 1962 and remained friends til the end. The highlight of our college days at SLU came in the Spring of 1963. Crazy as I may have been, I drove an amphibious car ACROSS THE MISSISSIPPI RIVER at midnight with Frank as my passenger.  We landed in Mississippi mud.

Frank was always a free spirit. He was dauntless. His natural abilities as an artist were nonpareil. Frank could draw anything. In college I witnessed a rendering of a German combat soldier Frank did in 10 minutes! In Vietnam, Frank was a year ahead of me. Once he penned a B-52 bomber in flight as a cachet on the air mail envelope.

Frank introduced me to Mount Holyoke College, S. Hadley, and to folk singer JOSH WHITE. We had fun as we should have. As a marketing specialist with MASS MUTUAL, Springfield, Frank imparted selling to yours truly. "He knew how to get to the printer!:.. and to "Enjoy the ride".

Frank was unique in his own right. He loved baseball and the Boston Red Sox. His rendering of a baseball in flight is wonderful. Maybe it belongs in the Hall of Fame in Cooperstown?

Yes, some of us grow old and then a few leave an indelible mark on our souls. Frank Tencza touched me as no other friend could! RIP Frankie!

YOUR FRIEND,

'POTVIN'

THE PORTABLE CONNIE MACK

Earlier this morning my esteemed friend and local historian DENNIS LEBEAU presented me with a cassette bearing Connie Mack's life in words. This one cassette deserves conversion to a CD and I plan on including a copy with me book!

It seems U.S. History continues to take a back seat in life. "Too busy".."I never was good at remembering names and dates.." well.. here's your wake-up call, ladies and gentlemen.

Just now I came from the Salvation Army in Spencer with three purchases
  1. A Radio Shack portable cassette recorder/player
  2. Hits of Pattie Page on an LP
  3. THE SOUND OF MUSIC sound track in a cassette.
Total cost $5.00.

Now I am completely mobilized to take my message to potential donors. "Fundraisers" on Facebook will be where I begin.  More to follow.

Drove up to Bell Hill to "think" about the restoration of BATES OBSERVATORY. "Make no little plans for there isn't in them to stir men's souls!" Essentially a WAKE-UP call, indeed, for the townspeople.

Also, the  Town Hall clapboards are sucking up the rain. Not good. The scraping is excellent but now must be given a coat of primer and cover before it's too late. "I know men in the ranks and they stay in the ranks because they just don't have the ability TO GET THINGS DONE!"

Did a quick stroll around the Walnut Grove Cemetery, NB. A great place to learn more about North Brookfield's illustrious past. Also the FRENCH CEMETERY with an 1899 marker poses a question? Anybody have any info?

Finally, the World Series: AMAZING. I watched one hour then hit the sack. Got up hours later and saw a baseball game was being played. I thought HMM SOX IN 2.. then I realized it was the 15th Inning. OMG. The ending was climatic and good for LA. "Teams know when to win!" Now we have a great contest brewing.. fasten your seat belts and hope for a 9 inning game tonight.

No sleep deprivation for me! LOL.

1.5 i8nches of rain today. 46 degrees..NE winds.

ORNITHOLOGY IS ABOUT BIRDS!

A fancy word, that ornithology. Sometimes we gloss over Mother Nature without appreciating the goodness we have for free. Today, I took a step in the right direction, first, by buying a Humming Bird Feeder ( a mistake) then by buying the real deal in Sturbridge.

The Bird Store and More affords much more than bird seeds. This enterprise is First Class to satisfy all of your curiosities regarding the finer things in country living. From an active apiary of yellow jackets to burnished copper art works, The Bird Store is truly humming!

Bird-watching seems to be an endless study and it is. Housing birds can run the gamut from a Hotel to a shanty one-roomer. It seems all of Nature is silent until the heraldic sounds fill the airs of heaven. The sophistication of nesting reveals the many variations...including a nest-egg.

THE BIRD IS TRULY THE WORD..Why not travel to Sturbridge to THE BIRD STORE AND MORE, 4 Cedar Street at the Route 20 intersection? Open daily 10"00am - 6:00pm and Sunday 11:00 - 5:00 pm. or visit them www.thebirdstoreandmore.com  or call (508)-347-BIRD. then you can crow about your experiences!

THE MAKINGS OF MY BOOK

It's like juggling two skunks and a bobcat in preparing my work for publication. It is a team effort with the "Staples Girls" helping Old Bob assembling everything for publication..soon.

In all enterprises there are integral parts: 1. Finance 2. Research 3. Production 4. Sales.

Before I do anything I will fashion a prototype to show investors where I'm coming from. This one publication will be tutorial, entertaining, instructive and warm in nostalgia. It will portray The Brookfields as it really is: Unique.

It looks like a black cover will portray a vintage Country Auction photograph Antrim N.H, 1917 AND TITLE.. The articles written by yours truly will be "the real McCoy. No relation to Danny McCoy! LOL.

I will be soliciting Brookfield advertisers to buy spaces in the back of my work. In the meantime, I will wear my "Thinking Cap."

My target date for publication will be 1/1/2019.

Please spread the word around.

THANKS!

MODEL" A" FORDS IN THE BROOKFIELDS

Even at this late date, Model A Fords exist in The Brookfields. Some may recall Mr. Navin's Model A parked near Kelly's Shoe Store. Others may recall J. Irving England's Model A touting "BROOKFIELD MACHINE." Herman Masuzzo, the typewriter man enjoyed a WOODY in his advancing years.

Today, there's new fire in West Brookfield with Bob Conlin's 1930 A Roadster. Better yet I just was a passenger in Henry's Baby touring the sites in WB. The perspective given by vintage autos is amazing!
  • Mechanical brakes
  • No seat belts
  • Armstrong power steering
  • No radio or CD player
  • No AC
  • Etc.
  • No kidding!
The thrill of it comes by ambulating your bodies into the freshly upholstered front seat. The rumble seat is unto itself.

Older vehicles in our society bring back "The Good Old Days." I recall Damon Morse

driving Hammy Lincoln's Model "A" in the orchards at Brookfield. The needle valve was necessary to get "Nelly-Belle" running. Only four cylinders gave a unique sound in banging and the horn was distinct A-OOGAH!

Now Bob's car will be in mothballs for the next 6-8 months as winter slams us with winds and rain. The warmth comes from the delight in just riding around Town for the fun of it!

Thanks Bob Conlin.. you da man!

COOPERSTOWN RESPONSE

Just received an e-mail from the Cooperstown Baseball Museum!  On the 31st the review committee will determine if my VIETNAM World Series letter to my folks will make the grade. If accepted I'll be in the ranks as a contributor to history. Wish me luck!

MY FASCINATION WITH THE UNITED STATES PRESIDENCY

It all began while I was in the 7th grade at St. Joseph School, North Brookfield when I began learning American History through my hobby of collecting stamps. While a look at the world's geography was important my focus peered in on both definitive and commemorative issues. As I grew, my hobby grew. Ronnie Stackow and Richard Gagnon, two neighborhood friends, too, collected stamps. We received tutoring from Miss Ruth Young, also a collector.

U.S. postage is, perhaps, the best teacher in itself as each stamp tells a story commemorating something from our past i.e. The World Columbian Expo in 1892 -1893.This set is awesome in itself. Better yet, the 1938-1939 Presidential Series fired my mind into the stratosphere... and I fastened my seat-belt with delight.

Each stamp bears a portrait of the presidents from Washington to Calvin Coolidge. Both the $2.00 Harding and the $5.00 Coolidge issues made my heart skip a beat. It was love at first sight. Within a year or so I had memorized each president by name. I was having fun.

Fast forward to February 14, 1964, just weeks after the JFK murder, LBJ came to Saint Louis U. It was a cold Friday in winter and his approach from DC piqued my imagination further. A sitting Texan coming my way..in the flesh. I was the first student awaiting his arrival (8 hours later.) As the crowd built up  my front row position gave me hope of shaking the president's hand... and I did!

From the experience came further interest in the Presidency. I was hooked.
I shook the tall Texan's hand and even asked him for his pocket handkerchief as a souvenir. "Sorry, Son, I may need it later!" The photographers captured this moment and it is by this historic photograph I further grew in interest.

In Texas at Fort Sam I met him again.

My US., history professor, William B. Faherty, SJ, enjoyed my enthusiasm.

Then as I grew, my interests in the Presidency grew. The tap root of my political loves came with JFK in 1960.

Nixon clearly was not my favorite. "Tricky Dickey" No thanks.

In the 1990s I grew in the ways of writing for the Spencer New Leader. From Learning About Antiques I slid into second base covering the New Hampshire Primary! I was credentialed to cover both BUSH and CLINTON. The thrill of "making news" with the Big Boys rang my chimes.

I learned early on as a reported you must be aggressive. Mother Rita imparted her wisdom as we drove to Portsmouth to be credentialed.

Despite many negative connotations of "POLITICS" there's nothing like it.
From being refused an autograph by ROSS PEROT to sneaking by the SECRET SERVICE in a NH Town Meeting I learned the ropes.

The highlight to all of this experience was connecting with President Bush and Arnold Schwarzenegger in town hall rally. In shaking the president's hand I said "You're a good Yankee, Mr. President!" The Bush klan all are New Englanders despite their Texas fame.

If you are a parent reading this blog, I highly recommend teaching your kids what our Democracy is all about. Don't rely on the educators.. but instead..do what I did..

"ALL THE WAY WITH LBJ!"
