RUBY TUESDAY

After a trip to Tony's Cleaners, Spencer,  a good part of my day was listening to Wayne Dyer's wisdom. submit Dr. Dyer was a brilliant mind in self-development. His messages can be seen on You Tube and are worth the time. I plan on listening more in the days ahead.

No package from Belmont, NC.

Had lunch in North Brookfield at the Senior Center. Tonight Josh gave me a haircut. Now the Red Sox are trailing 2-0. Too early.

Heat and humidity return tomorrow.

A BOILER PLATE MONDAY

Things got done by me this day. An oil change at Ken's Citgo in EB started my day. It is the best insurance for my Honda with 239,100 miles on it. Then I did one lap around the Town Common. I traveled to NB then to Sturbridge and checked out Marshals fashions. Haven't bought any clothes there in months! Walmart has an amazing array of HDTV television.. cheap!

Next I tanked up with "Southbridge gasoline"
at $2.69 a gallon. Still cheap.

No mail from Belmont, NC. Anxiously awaiting a family video from Ben.

Laundry in Warren then a highlight in listening to Dr. Wayne Dyer's philosophy. Nothing compares to his wonderful thoughts on life and living!

The Red Sox game is now in extra innings. Will the Sox win? Stay tuned!

MY 76TH BIRTHDAY

My mother used to say 'It's only a number, Bob!" She was right. In many ways I feel young. In many ways I feel healthy. In some ways I feel older. I take my share of medications. I feel my weight is spot-on at 177.8 lbs.

I live independently by myself. The many birthday greetings today are appreciated. Josh & Heidi and kids joined me at Ron & Chris lunch for lunch and a birthday cake. I received big gifts  and a special gift from Chase who mowed my lawn. "Happy Birthday, Pops."

The Boston Red Sox gave us a nice victory at Fenway over Minnesota 3-0. A big record was set today.

A good week coming up.

SOX WIN 10-4

Looking Good., Boston!

MY AERIAL AMERICA SATURDAY

I delight in watching the Smithsonian Channel coverages of the New England States in particular./ Today I watched Maine, New Hampshire, Vermont, Rhode Island and Massachusetts. There isn't any finer way to brush up on history, geography and color photography.

I enjoyed reviewing the may sites so familiar to me... from Boston to Cape Cod to The Green Mountains and else where. The camera work and the astute narration by Jim Conrad is the best. Today's coverage was particularly good because these states are home.

Also,. New Jersey, New York and Pennsylvania were shown.

It was a quiet day.

Now the Red Sox are leading...

SOXAHOLIC FINALLY

This Fenway victory reveals the Red Sox as a come-from-behind victory. I was convinced the Sox were in for their third defeat in a row. Wrong! This win puts the team back in good graces. Nice job men!

Earlier in the night I visited the 'Kemp-Nut's Bachelor
Party at the American Legion WB. For two hours I observed Richard Kemp and Jeff Nickerson ply their talents cooking chicken barbecue and Pollard's sweet corn. The meal was great and the crowd was very large. It was quite a production! Thanks men.

Sister Jan treated me for a scallop dinner at Howard's Drive In at noon. Then we visited Josh & Heidi and Maddie and Evie on Birch Hill then over to Kennedy Road to see nephew Stevie and his rambunctious white dogs. Steve has a Man Den of stuffed animals caught over the years. WOW!

My day began with foodstuffs from HANNAFORD NB.

One more day of hot weather. Cooler on Sunday!

"CRYING IN THE RAIN"

The Everly Brothers great hit Crying in the Rain is appropriate for this July weather. There are two kinds of people who like this weather.. those who love this clammy-type weather and those who loathe the snows of a January day.

Yesterday, I paid a visit to Steve Magnante in his North Brookfield home. Steve likes this weather! He was shirtless enjoying a peanut butter & jelly sandwich. My visit was cordial. Steve likes this type of weather. I do not!

I told Steve how I maneuvered my visit to Mohegan-Sun in June. He was surprised when I told Steve how I got in to shake his hand for free!

In other news I am discovering blood sugar stabilizers for my diabetes. Lots of offerings on the Internet. Worth looking into.

No relief in sight! Summer as usual!

THE WORST TRIPS TO AND FROM BEANTOWN

I left home at 8:15 for a 10:30 appointment at Mass  General. I am glad I did! I got to Leicester and headed for the Mass Pike in Auburn. BAM. The announcer told of traffic problems and problems they were. I zigg-zagged across Route 20 aand opted to follow smart travelers. I got lucky, I guess, and ended up in Shrewsbury onto Route 9 headed east. It was surreal. More traffic. Then onto The Pike...slow, slow, slow. Nothing went my way!

As I got to the pike.. more of the Same. I was getting nervous I stopped in Natick for a pit stop and encountered more "stop and go!" Was I going to make it for my appointment? Storrow Drive drove me crazy. I began to maneuver employing my UBER techniques. I jumped two red lights and then some. I became more aggressive with each minute!

The MGH parking garage gave me a break. I parked in spot 353 and ran towards the elevator. Floor 9 and a little luck saw me check in at 10:22. I made it in time.

RETURN ON THE MASS PIKE

Never have I seen such torrents on I-90. It is amazing we didn't all drown. No accidents - no kidding. Puddles personified. Credit to all of the drivers.

With gasoline at 3.17 on the Pike I chose to buy cheap gas in Southbridge. I tanked up buying 15 gallons. I saved 5  bucks making my trip worthwhile. No matter where I drove the downpours were terrible.

I traveled 145 miles total and made it home without incident! I hope this never happens again!

MEMORIES OF BASEBALL IN TORONTO

The sun is shining in Toronto and I have been watching Toronto/Minnesota baseball for the past three hours. It is heartening to have memories of the 1991 All-Star Game attended by Ben and Josh. The holiday was awesome from dining atop the CN Tower to seeing the Rogers Center roof close.

It was a contest of another era. We enjoyed every aspect of the festivities in style. Joe Garagiaola was the host for the Home Run Derby which was played in the afternoon.

Toronto is the Canadian City to visit. North of Niagara Falls, NY, this one city has it all. I wrote a comprehensive story for The Worcester Telegram in My Favorite Vacation.  Anybody have a copy I can borrow?

"TEENAGERS NEED A GOOD SLUMBER" NYT 7/24/2018

Yesterday's New York Times, in the Science section carried a great little story on the importance of teenagers needing a good night's rest. There are so many qualities of rest that play into being healthy in growing up. "Inadequate sleep - 31 percent slept less than seven hours a night and 58 percent had poor sleep efficiency as measured by percent of time  awake after initial sleep onset the article reads.

Sleep today seems to be different with the advent of hand held advices and other distractions.

In other matters I received a Birth Certificate from Shelia Buzzell so I can now obtain a Drivers License! To Southbridge after breakfast.

Pay Day today. Good.  Hot muggy weather continues!

MY TED WILLIAMS MEMOIR

I got to touch Ted William's arm as he drove away from Fenway Park in 1959 after attending a double header at Fenway Park with Jim Cadman and my folks. Ted was driving a shiny new Cadillac and seemed to be herding the crowd of fans as he left! He seemed to be merciless in his manners.

In 2002, on the day of his death, I was living in Boston at the veteran's shelter on Court Street when I decided to go to Fenway to see what was going on. It was on the doorstep at Fenway I observed a solitary red rose! There wasn't anything else present showing of his passing.

Then I recognized a face, a custodian, whom I asked about the memory of #9. I was amazed at his response! "Ted Williams was a no good SOB!" This was the legacy he left at Fenway! I was amazed.

Ted Williams was bigger than life. He was lanky, arrogant, handsome, controversial and most of all, human. He was patriotic and served his Country well. I liked Ted Williams s he was truly the best! I owned an Hillerich & Bradsby  baseball bat for years bearing his emblazoned signature! His signature flowed like his home-run swing! When YAZ was coming up as a slugger Ted advised Carl "to improve his signature. He did!

The best part of TW was the contest with Joe DiMaggio. Both men left an indelible mark to the game of baseball. Hitter Ward Boggs credits his successes to reading the Ted William's book The Science of Hitting.

I even once asked Curt Gowdy about Ted when Curt spoke at Aetna Men's Club in Hartford! "Ted Williams was all set!" was his response.

Ted liked fishing and will always be remembered as "The best in baseball!" I liked his rhythm in his swing, the best!

I was surprised to see my rain gauge's reading just now: 2.25 inches! Our grounds are saturated yet the WATERING BAN signs are still posted! But why?

High humidity means one thing for me: Air conditioning. What would we do without AC? Also, mosquitos breed well in this weather.

PAGEVIEWS TODAY 214

The pageview activity today picked up somewhat at 214. Good.

The big news is the Boston Red Sox continue to flex their bats and deliver quality SALE pitching. Each day is a victory in itself. Now to keep the juggernaut moving towards Cold Weather. Actually, it is a long way off.

The change in the weather gives us a change in the mood... and the week's forecast is WET!

I think the Yankees got rained out against the METS. Baseball lives in the Northeast.

After enjoying 4 glorious summer days in July, the fragile miracle has arrived: RAIN!

Actually the balance is good. The growing season needs a balance of both so here we are!

I think the spread of good weather is good as we now focus our endeavors indoors. What shall it be? Organize each room? Pick-up?  Listen to Casey Kasem as I am doing. It is all part of our day. Later the Red Sox will be on tv @ 1:10 PM.  The show goes on!. Let's hope for a victory today!

MY SATURDAY RECAP

A busy day.. a good day several trips to Birch Hill to Chase mowing my lawn to a surprise visit from "Johnson!" No more gambling for the duo who once enjoyed weekly trips to the Indians in Connecticut! Instead we did another junket west to the Quabbin after dining at Debbie Wong in Ware.

This July Saturday was warm.. then  a return to Josh & Heidi's for  "meat bake."

Charcoal prevailed in the outside cookery. Josh and friends handled tons of food for the more than 30 contemporary guests and their kids. Then the East wind kicked in and it actually got cold! Like unheard of. Visitors commented on the differences in temperatures from downtown. Women put on sweaters and kids frolicked around. Little Evie took charge of her many friends.

I chose to leave the party to see the Red Sox fall to the Detroit Tigers! tomorrow is another day! GO SOX!

Right now it is 65 degrees!

A RECAP OF MY JULY FRIDAY

First to Southbridge were gasoline is $2.659 a gallon .30cents cheaper than Country Corner in  WB! I tanked-up 35 dollars worth. I went to the RMV for a license renewal only to find out I needed a copy of my birth certificate. Back Monday!

I did a good amount of reading today.. both Dyer and Peale. Both men were prolific writers and inspiring messages.

Got a nice call from sister Janet. She invited me out for my birthday on the 29th!

Had an interesting inquiry about handling an estate in Spencer of a painting contactor. Consulted with SonJosh. Also called Bernier Bouvier, Painter, for possible interest. There's also a 2003 Harley-Davidson cycle in the estate! More later.

A very warm July day, indeed. OOps, almost forgot MOON LANDING.. JULY 20, 1969! Where were you? I was in Charlton City!

Baseball is back in business. Boston is in Detroit. Tomorrow a 6:10 PM Game!

MY ERRONEOUS ZONE

My erroneous zone is I just don't know how to eat properly! Breakfast is never a problem and then there's lunch and supper. I am all over the map with improper nutrition!

Milk is my favorite drink and more water would be smart...then there's the temptation of fast foods. My alibi is "I live alone." I have a propensity to grab improper food like bacon and all variations of processed foods. Hard salami, .. hard headed Bob!

I have all kinds of charts provided by the VA dietician...Nothing seems right. My further alibi is the cost of food... and yes, my missing denture. That will be corrected Tuesday.

On another note came while I was reading YOUR ERRONEOUS ZONES. I was seated on the porch in a chair  when a dragon fly came in. A beauty it was as I chased it around my "space." Then in an attempt to lift up a combination window to free this drone, the aluminum window came down hard on my  third finger, right hand, squashing the nail! "F*** me!" I exclaimed. Blood gushed and I ran for the box of Band Aids. Fortunately, I caught things immediately.90 minutes later things seem to be in control. Throbbing it does.

The moral of the story is read your book and forget about dragon flies as entertainment! LOL.

DUSTY SPRINGFIELD IN AUSTRALIA

Over the years when I tell people 'I've been to Australia three times' people perk up: "I've always wanted to go Down Under." What's it like?

I have traveled from Sydney to Cairns then to Canberra (Australian Capital Territory) to  Melbourne. All along I had a dear friend and Mate, Rodney .We were kindred spirits in many ways. Rod, as a musician, taught me the ways of "being on stage."

Mr. Bryar knew history.. from the American Civil War to the Outback. We never were short for words until his passing two years ago.

My R&R from Vietnam saw Australia come alive in October of 1967. For eight days I tool in the sights of Sydney and Melbourne! It was pure fun.Being in the audience of singer Dusty  Springfield will always be my Australian highlight. Dusty was absolutely great singing 'Wishing  and Hopin.'

For those wishing and hoping to go to Australia I say "GO FOR IT!" Any season is great for an Australian vacation. Quantas has an "All Australia Pass." My word of advice has always been "Go for 30 days" not two weeks. Jet Lag can be a killer.

Take the whole family as I did in 1990.Ben and Josh joined Mother Rita and others. There are many options in visiting Australia from Ayers Rock to the Great Barrier Reef. Perth, Western, Australia, as well as the famed Sydney Opera House make Australia tops in being Down Under!

AWAY FOR A WEEK - NOW I'M BACK!

It was a function of getting my meds back on track. I was off of Lithium for several months, etc. Now I'm ready to blog my heart out. In my absence I have made new friends and I'll leave it at that.

Today's downpours left us with 3 inches of rain here in the Brookfields. I drove back from Waltham and boy was it a challenge. Few times have I driven in such conditions. Traffic flowed at a snail's pace and there were no accidents observed.

So what's new Pussycat? ALL-STAR Game scheduled in an hour or so.

Trump won't make it! He has his own agenda. He is wishy -washie in everything he handles.. or so it seems.

PAGEVIEWS TODAY 322

322 IS A GREAT WAY TO END THE DAY. Thanks.

The northwest winds have arrived just in time for the weekend. Mother used to refer to the "Northwest winds" coming across the meadow from the Wendemuth farm. Our parlor curtains would rise to the occasion.

The uncomfortable weather has left for a couple of days.. thang God. It seems we have been "partied to death!"

I'll have Chase mow the lawn tomorrow. Needs it.

SOX are hotter than the weather. Kansas City is trailing by eight runs. If the SOX can keep winning until the All Star break the Fenway faithful will love it. I say take one game at a time.

I did walk around most of the common sidewalk after supper. Must increase my exercise you know.

A RECAP OF MY RARE COIN, CLOCK AND ESTATE AUCTIONS

It all began with my calling 10 lot coin auctions at the Worcester County Numismatic Society's monthly meetings in 1979-1980. My interest in becoming an auctioneer grew. First it was several friends from the coin club recruited me to auction off their Benefit Auctions. As my interests grew my desire to be trained in the ways of a professional grew... first  with two weeks attending Missouri Auction School.. then to Indiana University, Bloomington.

coins.. then it was doing

My big break came in 1982 when Norman J. Richardson, Trust Officer at Shawmut hired me to liquidate the real and personal property at the Barry Estate, Hampton Street, Auburn. Then it was called "Beginner's Luck." Not really as I had planned on being a success!

I observed other auctioneers such as Bob Glass. Auctioneering is a calling not for the faint hearted. A strong back, good vocal chords and a helpful team makes an auction become real. It took me 4-6 weeks to effectuate a sale. Having product knowledge is tantamount to it all. My library grew as I grew.

Auctions may be "On-Site" or Ballroom. On site auctions lend themselves to being more profitable. Also, I don't like auctions with a Reserve! My philosophy is "One Way .. out the door.. to the Highest Bidder.

Anything and everything may be auctioned off: Cars, trucks, equipment, antiques.. you name it.. to the highest bidder.

My auction sales have been staged in Belchertown, Tully, Ware, Clinton, Auburn, the Brookfields, Worcester, Southbridge and beyond. An auctioneer requires a State License and a permit in the municipality where the event will be staged. Inspection and a good prepared catalog or listing gives you order and direction.

You will need auction clerks, cashiers, runners and another auctioneer or two depending on the size of the auction. Logistics are important to properly display items to be sold. Clerking sheets are good to record prices and bidder numbers. Also, a policeman is needed for traffic control.

By offering the more prominent items first you control the flow of the auction in my view.  Plus the auctioneer must keep his cool.

National and state organizations of auctioneers offer training and insights into the process of selling. National Conventions are exciting and are held each summer. I have attended conventions in  Atlanta,Anaheim, Houston, Philadelphia, Hollywood, FL and Oklahoma City! For me it was always a family affair! Also, seminars are offered in different times of the year.

The most expensive item ever auctioned off by me came in 1982 when a Chippendale Slant Front Desk c. 1790 fetched $8,000 + 10%.!

S-ROLL TOP $2,000

TIGER MAPLE  sold for  $8.000 +10%

Today, the internet, smart phones and all have changed the auction mix. Be it as it may, auctions still can be fun and that they are!
