TIME FOR SOME PORRIDGE

I love Quaker Oats! As a boy growing up in North Brookfield, steam radiators hissed as we began each winter day. My earliest days were spectacular. Melted butter on a piping-hot bowl of Quaker Oats began my day. Buttered toast from our Proctor toaster replaced the kind Judy in Enchantment-Land collects.


Nobody ever complained about the cold; we enjoyed the warmth and cold of winter. I had a Taylor Indoor-Outdoor thermometer on my bedroom wall along with my new brass anemometer. The winds blew..so what. Benny Blake used to plow for the town and in 1958 I asked Benny if I could ride with him!


A year later I rode with Freddy Charron in his Yellow Submarine Jeep plowing. Uncle Luke had a Ford Bucket type tractor. One Christmas I rode shotgun with my God-Father!


Life was good then...Life is good now. My hair did not "grow white in a single night."


Winter is Winter.. not Johnathan Winter or Winter Street.


Right now it is 6 degrees outside and 70 degrees inside. Nice. I await midnight in style. While millions will be in New York celebrating hundreds of Americans may freeze to death as they are Homeless. I don't think the media knows how to handle the homeless. I do.


All of our clocks are ticking. What are your hopes for the NEW YEAR? Clearly GOOD HEALTH is tantamount. How much do you weigh? I remain at 184 lbs. My "Battle of the Bulge" is in tact and I think I will treat myself to a steaming bowl of Quaker Oats!

BIG TOBACCO'S LATEST WEAPON OF HUMAN DESTRUCTION: ELECTRONIC CIGARETTES

" An electronic cigarette or e-cigarette is a handheld electronic device that tries to create the feeling of tobacco smoking" as I read Wikipedia. "The health risks of e-cigarettes are uncertain however "when used by non-smokers, e-cigarettes can lead to nicotine addiction.' This is a BAD DEAL especially for the youth around the world!


" E-cigarettes create an aerosol, commonly called vapor. Invented in 2002 by Chinese pharmacist HON LIK the "global use has risen exponentially." In the US and United Kingdom their use is widespread" further reads Wikipedia.


I don't think millennials realize the implications of both tobacco usage or e-cigarettes on their pink lungs. Further, no matter how you look at it, e-cigarettes suck. Global sales exceed US$7 billion. Nicotine is nicotine, regardless. It is like heroin and other drugs.


Pity the addicted smokers on Planet Earth. "In the UK there were about 2.6 million users in 2015. In France in 2014 between 7.9 and 9.2 million users." and nobody is really crying "Wolf." "In 2013, more than a quarter million middle and high school students never smoked regular cigarettes but had USED E-CIGARETTES 3 times as many as 2011."


Wikapedia says "The main components of an e-cigarette are a mouthpiece, a cartridge (tank) a heating element/atomizer,a microprocessor, a battery, and possibly an LED light on the end." Put that in your pipe and smoke it!
 It only makes sense to me(cancer-producing traps.)


In my view there's no argument in favor  of e-cigarettes. SMOKE IS SMOKE!"

Finally the "adverse effects of vaping:

• Eye irritation, blurry vision, wounds and burns in case of e-cigarette explosion of tank.
• Mouth and airways - irritation, cough, increased airway resistance
• Heart & circulation, chest pain, increased blood pressure, increased heart rate
• Stomach, vomiting, nausea pain.

The reality is there is no real defense for these weapons of human destruction!

 I quit on October 7, 1968. Never put another cigarette between my lips to inhale tobacco smoke. Today, according to Will, "Smoking kills, on average 1,200 Americans. Every day. More people die every year from smoking than from MURDER, AIDS, SUICIDE, DRUGS, CAR CRASHES AND ALCOHOL COMBINED."


Big tobacco is married to  all state governments not to mention Uncle Sam, who too is a smoker! The states of Connecticut and New York suck $4.35 in each pack of Marlboros and all other brands. Missouri is basically FREE with a tax per pack of 17 cents. The state average in taxes is $1.72!


So many governments have huge stakes in a steady supply of new smokers to replace those killed by smoking."


On the personal side I have lost  friends ..Jack Swedis and Rodney Bryar, Ronnie Stackow and my father and my uncles, grand parents..... family to tobacco.

But the real truth isn't the killer qualities of smoking cigarettes it is the arrogance and power of "The Marlboro Man." Philip Morris USA is a branch of (Altria.)Lorillard market cigarettes under the names of Maverick, Old Gold, Kent, True and others.


Nothing stops the TOBACCO JUGERNAUT. NOTHING!.. and maybe nothing ever will."John Quincy Adams wrote in 1845 'In my early youth, I was addicted to tobacco,' So what's new?


"Much of America's health care expenses (from lung cancer, coronary artery disease, AIDS,Type-2 diabetes brought on by obesity, violence, vehicular accidents)... etc.


According to Will, only a sixth of adults smoke today compared to nearly 50% 50 years ago. Maybe that's why people are living much longer?

Extreme cold, debilitating weather, kept spontaneous interest to an absolute minimum. Workers arrived according to Hoyle. Chairs were arranged by new worker "Martha." Joe, Manuel and Martha put the finishing touches to the event. All systems said "GO." "Game-On!


From 9:00 Am  on interest trickled in. It was 10:40 Am I quickly came to my senses: "NO INTEREST, regardless. Not good. I expanded the Preview to 11:30. 6 registered bidders, one  from Westfield, one from North Brookfield 4 from Ware.


All traditional advertising proved futile. But why? I'm an auctioneer! PRINT MEDA IS DOOMED!


In Good Faith I read my opening speech. Ronnie's sons were in attendance with wives and family. I advised my client not to stay for the auction. I'm glad I did.

This auction attempt was aborted after 5 or 6 lots were sold to the highest bidders. Col. Bob Glass came up from Sterling, CT. To help. I huddled with my 2 advisors before cancelling the event.


The evidence reveals the Dollar Generals and Walmart are smothering and killing the Free Enterprise System with stuff. Corporate America thinks it is for the good of Americans, when in reality, it is ANETHEMA. "RAMMING THE GOAT DOWN THE THROAT" will be the Boomerang in the final analysis! The Corporation does not care!


In our "Throw-Away Society" the GIANTS are slaughtering the Mom & Pops Enterprise in every America small town.One by one the friendly store owners have been felled by the BIG SHOTS. The Little Man will be extinct in a few short years.


When I witness little Evie, Age 4, playing with an electronic cash register Santa brought her and attendant currency, I am blown away. It speaks, calculates, swipes, is voice activated. Has FAKE bills to go. I gave Evie a real dollar bill so she could compare. Absolutely amazing. This toy sells for $39.95!


My concern is for auctioneers around America. The proliferation of the Fisher-Price phenomena has built up mountains of PLASTIC..mostly worthless. On the other hand THE SALVATION ARMY  is the number one choice of shrewd consumers. WAKE UP! I am amazed and delighted with my purchases from SA.


Today's auction is the precursor for what lies ahead. I can not blame the weather, I can not blame the print media, I cannot blame Auction Zip. My signs in the window were as affective as All of the Above.


Where do we go from here? I DON'T KNOW?!

Paid Josh his rent $ and saw a Currier & Ives setting of my munchkins sliding down the slope. Chase and friends were clearing the Frog Pond. It was reminiscent of the Bates Street Frog Pond when I was a boy!Frolicking in the winter winds is part of growing up. Their rosy-red cheeks truly inculcates them in the ways of an Old Fashioned winter. Kind of poetic!

• 1862 A still picture is transferred. Abbe Giovanna invented the Pantelegraph. It could transfer an image through wires, similar to the way telephone wires transfer sound.

Christmas Day in the county.. how comforting. A gentle snow, imaginary fire crackling in the Rumford and a call from my Southern Brother in Doerun, South Georgia! JMB is the best. A Southern Baptist through and through and an auctioneer's auctioneer.


As the old saying goes BIRDS OF A FEATHER FLOCK TOGETHER. Tis true, tis true, tis true! It's like two coaches strategizing before the all important game. Auctions are no different. The harder I work the luckier I am.

IT'S SNOWING IN THE BROOKFIELDS - MERRY CHRISTMAS 2017

"I want to wish you a Merry Christmas from the bottom of my heart" sings Jose Feliciano.. the blind showman.


Frosty the Snowman is a much different concept in the framework of the Christmas Holiday.


The snow has been light since its inception. Calm and 27 degrees, beware of the Global Warming hoax: THE MONTREAL EXPRESS! After all it IS winter.  Sliding will be a favorite for kiddies and younger parents. Sister Jan and I received spiffy FLEXIBLE FLYERS from Santa in 1952 purchased from R.T. Quigley Hardware in North Brookfield, my home town.


"Quigs" was a wonderful social meeting place every Saturday night. Thelma (Tooty,) Bob and Gramps were my friends.Today Mrs. Quigley nears age 100 at the Quaboag Nursing Home! Her mind is as sharp as a  carpet tack.


Quigly Hardware was a precursor in local television sales in the 50s. Dad treated the Potvin Family with a Used Philco Set costing some $50.00. Little did we know and realize how television would transform our eyes and minds from radio and newspapers to now, the PRESENT MOMENT.


In researching "The Evolution of Television timeline" I am dazzled by the evoked memories of The BOOB TUBE! Baldy Hart had the 1st TV in North Brookfiels c. 1948! Names like RCA, Motorola, Raytheon, Marconi, Baird and many, many, more tried and many, many , many failed.Dumon

Lower television prices and advancing electronics have DISCOURAGED bench repairs in the last decade or two.Johnny Ryback and Erik Hundrup made MAC TV rich, or so it seemed. The "Television Doctor" arrived at your doorstep, pulled a couple of tubes like Old Doc Wight did, and you felt better: your television worked again. Aluminum "Bow Tie" antennas reached for the clouds hoping for a "reception without snow."


Cable came in in the late 80s and taught us how easy to spend hundreds on channels and smut we didn't really need. The BIG DISH on South Main Street, NB, was flaunted by Mr. Mrs. Arthur Lindsey. Others followed suit. The Lindseys also were HAMS as in radio. Richard B. Johnson, resident radio genius, crafted an incredible radio at age 14. I know, as Dick sent a message to the Boston Marine Operator in c. 1958. "GO AHEAD, Sender" We panicked. LOL. Hervey Gadbois on his Mount Guyot location had everybody's Handle  as far west as East Overshoe! LOL.

MY DIGITAL CHRISTMAS 2017

SonJosh baked a spiral ham as humanity tries to recover from the silly spiral called Christmas. As my grandchildren texted their favorite friends, the "Amazon Mouse" delivered the goodies from house to house.It was a new experience for me!


In observing Chase, Lily, Maddie and Evelyn-Rose at play, my deepest thoughts were the future lives they will live. Regardless of the age and era, KIDS NEED TO BE DISCIPLINED. If you don't, as adults, they will not understand the word emancipation. I knew at age 20 I must fly the coop and I did!


As I have preached in the past, a Westboro attorney told me 'THE BEST THING A PARENT CAN SHOW A CHILD IS BEING INDEPENDENT." Becoming self-sufficient is good. Teach thrift. KIDS HAVE RADAR!Give the kid everything they want...spoil them to death..and you will either alienate the BRAT or have them for "life-tenancy."


The alibis and excuses I hear reveal the kind of parent you are. When I recently heard an 18 year old lady say" My mom bought me this Smart Watch for Christmas for $850.00 truly a sign of extreme spoil-dom.


My Christmas on Birch Hill was terrific. A fire gently burning in the Rumford fireplace crafted by Ed Leland in 1985 radiated warmth beyond description. Santa Potvin was good to me." Food For January' with a Hannaford Gift Card, a bottle of Shulton OLD SPICE and a stack of red towels and facecloths.


Everyone felt up despite their down ailments. A STANLEY 4 Gallon Vacuum was received. Of course upon close scrutiny came the revelation "MADE IN CHINA" and people think they are buying American. Where have all the jobs gone Joe DiMaggio?


Corporate America offers "slave jobs." Walmart, Dollar General, Dunkin Donuts and all the rest are not really offering careers they are usurping the Millennials, paying scab wages, limit the hours to avoid health benefits and delivering wonderful stock profits to those who are already rich.They are suppressing creativity Let the critics of this blog yell, scream and moan. I have Freedom of the Press! Some may agree, others may disagree.. it doesn't affect me.

Two observations of mine this holiday season: The Patriots and the Lottery are YOUR new "religion." Folks seem to be numb to both. Christmas has met it's match. Plus overspending of worth junk builds homes perhaps with the wrong stuff!


Our world has changed. Just now I was enjoying a sausage, egg, & cheese at Dunkin Donuts here in West Brookfield when I observed a cute cashier zapping the SmartPhone of a customer! BAM. A cashless transaction. What's next paperless toilet paper ?


Better develop your computer skill's BIG TIME or you'll be Gone With The Wind..or be "pissing in the wind." and I mean it!

ELVIS "ALOHA FROM HAWAII" JANUARY 14, 1973 via Satellite

It was a historic 1973 Television Special. Where were you on January 14, 1973/ I was living in Scituate, Mass. over-looking the Atlantic Ocean from a picture window in my dining room! Life in 1973 was much different back then. My new brown Impala coupe was like a small Sherman tank and Joshua hadn't been born then. Benji's first Christmas was special as he was 6 months old.


I worked in Brockton at Aetna Claims as a supervisor.(The worst job in the world.) I endured for 2 more years.


The big thing in electronics was the hand-held calculator and yes, ELVIS FROM HAWAI. My television was a Zenith bought at Mac's TV in North Brookfield for about $500.00Little did I know and realize I'd be watching Elvis from Hawaii in 2017 on a 75" Smart TV with a pair of Fisher 40" high speakers. Essentially I am in heaven.


My dvd collection is growing exponentially with only two topics; U S History and Contemporary Rock and Roll. No longer do I numb my brain with Network Television. I don't want it and I don't need it. Someday I will pull the plug.


Anything ELVIS is highly recommended for those who want a "new life."
